Re:

How a Loan Write-Off Affects Your Credit Report and Score

A loan charge-off can hurt your score and remain on your credit report, but it does not automatically cancel the debt. Learn how the reporting period works and what paying, settling, or disputing can change.

A loan write-off—usually called a charge-off on a U.S. credit report—can remain as a serious negative mark and may lower your credit score. It does not, by itself, forgive the debt. Paying or settling the account may update its reported status, but accurate charge-off history generally does not disappear just because you paid.

Negative payment-history information can generally be reported for up to seven years. For a charge-off, the reporting period is tied to the delinquency that led to it, not restarted by the charge-off date or a later payment. The exact score effect depends on the scoring model and your credit file; there is no reliable universal number of points to expect.

What a loan write-off means

A lender may write off a seriously delinquent account as a loss for accounting or reporting purposes. In credit reporting, this is generally called a charge-off. The label describes how the creditor treats the account; it does not, on its own, cancel what you owe.

The creditor may still seek payment. It may also transfer or sell the debt. If a debt buyer or collection company becomes involved, a separate collection entry may appear alongside the original loan account. The original account’s balance and the collection account’s balance can change when a debt is transferred or sold, so do not assume the report alone tells you who currently owns the debt or what amount is due. Check your account documents and current credit reports.

Write-off, payment, and forgiveness are different

  • Write-off or charge-off: The creditor reports a seriously delinquent account as charged off; the entry is not proof that the debt was forgiven.
  • Payment: Paying may change the account’s reported status to paid, while accurate charge-off history can remain.
  • Settlement: A creditor may accept less than the amount owed. The account may then be reported as settled for less than the full amount, and the accurate history may remain.

How a charge-off appears and how long it can stay

A credit report may show the original loan’s payment history and charge-off status. If the debt was transferred or sold or placed with a collection company, a separate collection entry may also appear. These entries describe different reporting on the same underlying debt; check their balances, dates, status, and ownership information rather than assuming that one entry replaces the other.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says negative information about credit-account payment history can generally be reported for up to seven years. Its consumer guidance was last reviewed September 2, 2026. For charge-offs, Experian’s guidance explains that the period is connected to the first delinquency that led to the charge-off. The charge-off date is not a new starting point, and making a later payment does not restart that reporting period.

“Up to seven years” is a general U.S. credit-reporting duration, not a promise that every entry will remain for exactly seven years. It is also not a deadline for a creditor or collector to sue or collect. Collection deadlines can depend on the debt and where you live; the credit-reporting period and the legal period for collection are separate issues.

What payment or settlement changes

If you pay the charged-off account, the status may be updated to show that it is paid. That does not automatically delete accurate charge-off history. If you settle for less than the amount owed, the entry may reflect that it was settled for less than the full balance; settlement generally does not erase the accurate history either. Experian’s November 14, 2018 guidance specifically notes that paying a charged-off account does not restart the seven-year reporting period.

When a collection entry is also present, review both it and the original account. The reported information may need updating after payment or settlement, but do not assume that payment automatically removes either accurate entry.

What a charge-off can do to your credit score

A charge-off is a severe negative payment-history event. The missed payments that came before it may already have hurt your score, so the charge-off is not necessarily the first point at which the account affects your credit file.

There is no defensible universal estimate of how many points a loan write-off will cost. The result varies with the scoring model, your score before the event, other negative information, and the rest of your credit history. Experian’s guidance describes the impact as dependent on those model and file factors.

Paying can change how the account is reported, and a lender reviewing an application manually may view a paid account differently from an unpaid one. But neither a score increase nor a particular timing or number of points can be promised. A score’s response depends on the model and the full credit file.

Compare paying, settling, and leaving the account unpaid

The right option depends on more than the score. Consider the amount you would pay, how the creditor or collector will report the account, whether collection activity may continue, and any local legal questions. The table describes general reporting outcomes; confirm the terms for your specific account before paying or settling.

Option Amount paid Possible reported status or balance Does accurate charge-off history disappear or does the reporting period restart? What to clarify
Pay the account in full The amount required to pay it in full The status may be updated to paid; check that the reported balance reflects the payment. No. Payment does not automatically remove accurate history or restart the reporting period. Confirm who is entitled to receive payment, the amount due, and how the account will be updated.
Settle for less than the amount owed The agreed settlement amount, which is less than the amount owed The account may be reported as settled for less than the full amount. No. Settlement generally does not remove accurate history. Get the settlement terms and amount in writing, and confirm how the account will be reported.
Do not pay now No payment at this time The account may continue to show a balance, and collection may continue or the debt may be transferred or sold. No. Nonpayment does not make accurate charge-off history disappear. Verify the current creditor or collector, the balance, and any legal questions that depend on your location and debt type.

These are general credit-reporting outcomes, not a calculation of the legal or financial consequences for an individual loan. A charge-off does not establish that a particular company still owns the debt, that a stated balance is correct, or that a collector can take a specific legal action.

How to check your reports and address inaccurate information

Credit reporting companies are required to use reasonable procedures to assure maximum possible accuracy. If you see an error, focus on the specific information that appears wrong—such as the account status, balance, dates, or ownership—rather than disputing accurate history simply because it is negative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Review the account entries. Check the original loan and any related collection entry. Compare the account status, balances, dates, and creditor or collector information with your statements, payment records, and other account documents.
  2. Identify the exact discrepancy. Note which field appears inaccurate or inconsistent and what your records show. For example, distinguish a balance that was not updated after payment from a disagreement with an accurate charge-off history.
  3. Dispute the specific error with the relevant credit reporting company. Follow that company’s dispute process and provide the information or documents that support your claim. Keep copies of what you submit and any response.
  4. Review the result. Check whether the disputed information was corrected. If the entry remains and you still believe a specific fact is wrong, consider the reporting company’s response and the documents available to you before deciding what to do next.

A dispute is for inaccurate or incomplete reporting; it is not a way to guarantee deletion of a valid charge-off. The CFPB’s guidance on report accuracy supports disputing specific errors, while Experian’s guidance notes that paying an accurate charged-off account does not itself remove its history.

When to seek repayment or legal guidance

If you need help comparing repayment choices, credit counseling, debt settlement, debt consolidation, and credit repair are different services. The CFPB cautions that debt settlement companies cannot guarantee how much a consumer will save or how long settlement will take. A nonprofit credit counselor may be a resource to investigate if you want help reviewing repayment options, but counseling should not be treated as a way to erase accurate charge-off reporting.

If a collector contacts you, the debt has been sold or transferred, or you are deciding whether to pay or settle, verify the current account details and the terms before acting. Questions about whether a creditor can still sue or collect require attention to the debt type and your jurisdiction. The reporting period alone does not answer those legal questions; seek local legal or financial guidance when they matter to your decision.

Practical takeaways

  • A charge-off records serious delinquency; it does not automatically forgive the loan.
  • Negative payment history can generally be reported for up to seven years, with charge-off guidance tying the period to the delinquency that led to the charge-off.
  • Payment or settlement may update the account’s status, but neither guarantees removal of accurate history or a predictable score increase.
  • A transferred or sold debt may involve both the original account and a separate collection entry, so review each report entry and its details.
  • Dispute specific reporting errors. Treat collection deadlines as a separate legal question, not as part of the credit-reporting period.
