A customer said a washable swim diaper from Beau & Belle Littles arrived used and stained after Amazon resold a returned item as new. The company’s founders, Paul and Rachelle Baron, said the resulting one-star review harmed their small business. The reporting documents their account and the sequence of events, but does not establish that one review alone caused the company’s financial difficulties.
What happened to Beau & Belle Littles?
Bloomberg reported on July 15, 2024, that Beau & Belle Littles sold a washable swim diaper that had become popular on Amazon. According to the account, Amazon resold a returned diaper as new; a customer then posted a one-star review saying it arrived used and stained. Bloomberg said more than 100 buyers marked the review helpful. Those votes indicate the review drew attention, not how many sales it affected.
The customer’s reported wording was: “The diaper arrived used and was covered in poop stains.” That is the customer’s description, not an independent inspection finding. Bloomberg’s report and Ars Technica’s coverage describe the same incident and the family’s account of its consequences.
What financial harm did the family report?
The Barons said the review damaged their business. Bloomberg reported that they had planned to grow annual sales to $3 million in 2020. Ars Technica reported that the family described about $600,000 in debt. These are figures attributed to the family and the reporting, not independently audited financial statements.

The reported sequence does not prove that the review by itself caused the debt or the business’s decline. The articles relay the founders’ account of harm, but do not isolate the effect of the review from other possible business factors. The reporting also does not establish the family’s current finances or whether the business is still operating.
What did Amazon say it changed?
Amazon spokesperson Maria Boschetti told Ars Technica that the company had made improvements to its returns process after learning about the incident four years earlier. She said teams were instructed to open the box during inspection and validate the inner seal. Ars also reported that Amazon said it had removed the review after revisiting the issue in July 2024 and that returned products of this type would no longer be resold.

Those are Amazon’s statements as reported in July 2024, not an independent audit of warehouse procedures or confirmation of current practice. The articles do not establish how consistently the inspection instructions were followed across returns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why was a review about a used item disputed?
Amazon’s Seller Forums guidance distinguishes a customer review about the product from seller feedback about the seller or purchase experience. Its published rules generally allow removal of customer reviews only when they violate Community Guidelines; the guidance also lists complaints about sellers, orders, shipping, product condition, and damage among content it says does not belong in a customer review. That creates a practical tension in this case: the reported complaint concerned the condition in which the customer received the item, while the review appeared on the product page.

- LEAK AND BLOWOUT PROTECTION: up to 100% leakproof protection with an All-Around LeakGuard, Blowout Barrier and absorbent core.
Amazon’s guidance tells sellers who believe a review violates its rules to use the “Report abuse” link on the product page. The Barons’ dispute, as described in the coverage, concerned how those rules applied to a review tied to an item allegedly resold as new. A cited e-commerce consultant, Jason Boyce, argued that sellers should have a straightforward appeal route when a used item is resold as new. Amazon’s Seller Forums guidance sets out the platform’s stated distinction and reporting route.

What sellers can take from the account
- Separate the product complaint from the seller complaint. A review about the item itself is different from feedback about the transaction, even when the underlying issue may involve fulfillment or returned-item handling.
- Use the platform’s stated reporting channel. Amazon’s published guidance points sellers to “Report abuse” on the product page for reviews they believe break its rules.
- Keep the limits of the evidence in view. This reporting describes one family’s experience and Amazon’s response; it does not quantify how often returned products are mistakenly resold as new or establish a general rate of review-related business losses.
