A crude oil refinery separates oil into fractions, converts selected fractions into useful molecules, then treats and blends the resulting streams into finished fuels and other products. Distillation is only the first step: it does not, by itself, turn a barrel of crude into a fixed set of finished products.
How crude oil is refined
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) groups refining into three basic steps: separation, conversion, and treatment. Refineries also blend, store, and ship products. The equipment and product mix vary with the crude processed and the plant’s configuration.
1. Separation sorts crude into fractions
Refinery furnaces heat crude oil, and the resulting liquids and vapors enter a distillation unit. Inside the tower, components separate according to their boiling points: lighter fractions rise higher, while heavier fractions collect lower down. Every refinery has atmospheric distillation; more complex facilities may also use vacuum distillation to separate heavier material. EIA’s refining-process overview and its explanation of crude oil distillation and refinery capacity describe these stages.
The tower produces intermediate streams, not necessarily ready-to-use fuels. Lighter fractions include refinery gases and gasoline-range material; middle fractions include kerosene and distillates; heavier gas oils and residue remain lower in the tower. How each stream is used depends on the refinery’s equipment and later processing.

2. Conversion upgrades selected streams
Conversion units change the size or arrangement of hydrocarbon molecules so the refinery can make useful components from selected streams, including heavier ones. Cracking breaks large molecules into smaller ones, using heat, pressure, catalysts, and sometimes hydrogen. Fluid catalytic cracking and hydrocracking are two examples. Reforming upgrades naphtha into high-octane gasoline components, while alkylation combines certain gaseous byproducts of cracking into gasoline components. Some refineries also use cokers to process heavy fractions.
3. Treatment and blending prepare products
Intermediate streams are treated and combined to meet finished-product requirements. For gasoline, blending takes account of properties such as octane and vapor pressure. Refineries and blending facilities may also use inputs other than crude oil, including unfinished oils and other liquids, so crude is not the only possible input to the overall system. EIA explains the role of refinery inputs and outputs.

What a refinery makes
Refineries supply transportation fuels as well as products and feedstocks used for heating, paving, electricity generation, and chemical manufacturing. Product categories include:

- Walthers Cornerstone United Petroleum Refining Kit
- Gasoline and refinery gases
- Distillate fuel oil, including diesel fuel, and jet fuel

- Petroleum coke
- Asphalt and road oil
- Residual fuel oil and other products
The precise mix depends on crude properties, refinery configuration, and product demand. EIA’s overview of refining gives examples of products made from crude oil.
Why refinery outputs differ
Crude oils vary, including in density and sulfur content. Heavier crude generally takes more processing to produce high-value products than lighter crude. Refineries also differ in their secondary units and in the products they are set up to make. A simple distillation facility and a more complex refinery therefore do not necessarily turn comparable crude inputs into the same proportions of finished products.

For a dated U.S. example, EIA reports that refineries produced an average of 44.65 gallons of refined products per 42-gallon barrel of crude oil input in 2023. The figures below are annual U.S. averages published by EIA in 2024, not guaranteed yields from an individual barrel or facility:
| Product | Average gallons per 42-gallon barrel of crude input |
|---|---|
| Finished motor gasoline | 19.57 |
| Distillate fuel oil | 12.47 |
| Kerosene-type jet fuel | 4.41 |
| Petroleum coke | 2.06 |
| Asphalt and road oil | 0.84 |
These selected product categories do not add up to the reported total because they are not the full list of refinery outputs. EIA also reported a 6.3% average processing gain at U.S. refineries in 2023. Processing gain compares product volume with crude input volume: products generally have lower density than the crude processed, so their combined volume can be greater. It does not mean that matter has been created. See EIA’s 2023 inputs-and-outputs figures and its definitions and explanatory notes.

What distillation can—and cannot—tell you
Distillation explains how crude is initially divided into streams according to boiling point. It does not explain the full route to gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel. Conversion can alter selected streams, and treatment and blending determine whether the resulting components meet finished-product properties. Since equipment, crude inputs, and market needs vary, there is no single yield that applies to every refinery or every barrel.
