A 12-year-old can help create and develop an online money-making project, but an adult should lead the accounts, customer contact, and payments. Many popular platforms do not allow children under 13 to use their services at all; a parent’s permission does not override those age limits. For a child this age, the practical starting point is to choose a project together, then verify that the specific service and local rules allow the adult-managed arrangement.
What can a 12-year-old realistically do online?
At 12, think of earning online as a family-managed project, not an independent job on any site that looks appealing. A child might contribute creative ideas, make content, or help develop something to sell. The responsible adult must check the platform’s rules and take charge of any account, payment, and interactions with customers.
There is no evidence here establishing typical earnings or the likelihood of success. In particular, content creation can take time to build an audience and should not be treated as quick or guaranteed income.
Which online options fit—and which do not?
| Option | Can a 12-year-old use it? | Adult’s role and payment | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family-managed project | Potentially, if the chosen service permits the arrangement; no specific suitable service is established here. | An adult checks terms and local rules, manages any permitted account, customer contact, and payments. | Do not assume a service or payment method allows a 12-year-old’s participation. Verify its current terms first. |
| YouTube content | A child can contribute to a channel, but monetization requires program eligibility and adult-managed payment arrangements. | An under-18 creator needs an approved AdSense for YouTube account belonging to a parent or guardian over 18 to handle payments. YouTube’s under-18 monetization guidance explains this requirement. | Ad revenue is contingent on audience thresholds, country availability, and other program terms—not an immediate payment for posting. |
| Fiverr freelance services | No. Fiverr says children under 13 may not use its services. | Its parent-owned account provision is for users aged 13–17, not 12-year-olds. | Do not create or use a Fiverr account for a 12-year-old. Fiverr’s Community Standards also refer to local child-labor laws. |
| Etsy handmade or digital items | No. Etsy excludes users under 13. | The adult-owned, directly supervised account arrangement described by Etsy applies to minors aged 13–17, not children under 13. | Do not open an Etsy account for a 12-year-old. See Etsy’s policy on minors selling. |
How YouTube monetization works for an under-18 creator
YouTube can be a creative project, but reaching ad revenue requires meeting eligibility conditions. Google’s guidance specifies 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 eligible public watch hours on long-form videos during the preceding 365 days or 10 million eligible Shorts views during the preceding 90 days. Country availability, payment-account requirements, and other program terms also apply. These are eligibility thresholds, not typical earnings figures; check Google’s current YouTube earning guidance before relying on them, because program requirements can change.
For a creator under 18, YouTube’s stated monetization route is to link the channel to an approved AdSense for YouTube account belonging to a parent or guardian over 18. The adult handles the payment account; the child should not try to bypass that requirement by entering a false age. Details are in YouTube’s under-18 monetization guidance.
Why an adult account does not make every platform available
Google says AdSense applicants must be at least 18. If the publisher is under 18, a parent or guardian can apply using their own Google account; if approved, payments go to that adult. This is an adult’s account and responsibility, not permission for the child to independently sign up. See Google’s AdSense eligibility requirements.
Platform rules differ. Fiverr prohibits under-13 users, and Etsy likewise excludes them; each describes a parent-account arrangement only for older minors. A parent’s consent cannot change those restrictions. Always check the exact service’s current minimum age and account rules before a child participates.

What COPPA does—and does not—mean
In the United States, COPPA imposes obligations on covered online-service operators, rather than giving children general permission to join websites. The rule applies to operators of child-directed commercial websites or services that collect children’s personal information, and to general-audience services with actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information from a child under 13. Covered operators have duties that include clear privacy information, notice to parents, and generally verifiable parental consent before collecting information, subject to limited exceptions. The FTC’s COPPA FAQs explain the rule. The FTC also describes factors used to assess whether a service is directed to children, including its subject matter, visual and audio content, child-oriented activities, and evidence about its audience, in its COPPA compliance plan.

A practical safety checklist for the family
- Check age and account rules first. Read the current terms for the service and confirm whether an adult-managed project involving a 12-year-old is permitted.
- Keep the adult in charge. The adult should own or manage any permitted account, handle payment details, and review customer messages.
- Protect identifying information. Do not disclose the child’s home address, school, schedule, or personal contact details publicly or to customers.
- Keep conversations on the approved service. Do not let a stranger move customer discussions to private channels or ask for account credentials.
- Be wary of promises. Avoid paid schemes promising guaranteed returns or quick riches; no online income is guaranteed.
- Check local requirements. Child-work, tax, contract, and payment rules vary by location. The U.S. privacy guidance above does not establish the law elsewhere.
