A Houston rideshare driver identified in court-related reporting as J.W. sued Lyft and passenger Kenneth Kelley, alleging Kelley kidnapped and sexually assaulted her during a June 2023 trip. The complaint also alleges Lyft failed to promptly alert police after another driver reported an earlier kidnapping and robbery involving Kelley. These are allegations, not court findings; the available sources do not establish the civil case’s current status or outcome.
What J.W.’s lawsuit alleges
J.W.’s lawyers identify the case as J.W. v. Lyft, Inc. et al., Harris County District Court cause number 2024-33708, with Kelley also named as a defendant. The law firm’s case summary says the incident occurred in June 2023. It alleges J.W. declined a ride request as she was ending her shift, then accepted another request from the same passenger.
According to the complaint summary, Kelley allegedly threatened J.W. with a gun, demanded that she keep driving, and sexually assaulted her after directing her to a dead-end street. The summary says she escaped and contacted police. The underlying complaint and police records are not independently established by the reporting cited here, and the allegations have not been presented as judicial findings.
The complaint’s separate allegation about an earlier report
The lawsuit also alleges that another driver reported being kidnapped and robbed by Kelley in April 2023, and that Lyft did not promptly notify police, allowing Kelley to continue using the app. This account comes from J.W.’s counsel and contemporaneous reporting; the available sources do not independently establish what Lyft knew, when it knew it, or whether its response violated any duty. Attorney Anna Greenberg criticized Lyft’s safety policies, but her criticism is an advocate’s position, not a finding that Lyft’s policies caused the alleged assault.
