Neither booking directly with a hotel nor using an online travel agency (OTA) is automatically cheaper, more flexible, or better for every stay. Compare the same property, dates, room, guests, inclusions, total price, payment terms, and cancellation rules before you pay. Then choose the offer whose verified terms best fit your trip—and check who will handle changes or cancellations if plans shift.
What counts as booking directly or through an OTA?
A direct booking is made through a hotel’s own booking channel, such as its website or reservations team. An OTA is a third-party travel seller that displays or sells accommodation offers. The distinction matters because the channel can affect the available offer, the party managing the reservation, and whether a hotel loyalty program recognizes the stay. It does not, by itself, tell you which booking is the better deal.

Think of the decision as a comparison between two specific reservations, not between two labels. A hotel’s direct offer and an OTA offer may differ in room category, breakfast, payment timing, cancellation deadline, or other conditions. A lower headline rate can therefore represent a different product or a less flexible commitment.
Even if two booking pages use similar names for their rooms or rates, check the details attached to each offer. The same hotel and dates alone are not enough to establish that the offers are equivalent. The guest count, room and bed category, included benefits, and restrictions all matter to the comparison.

Compare the full cost, not the headline rate
Start with the amount you will actually pay for the stay. A nightly price alone may not include every tax, fee, or service shown elsewhere in the booking flow. Compare the total payable for the same dates and number of guests, and check which inclusions are part of that total. If one offer includes breakfast and another does not, either account for that difference in your decision or treat the offers as non-equivalent.
Look beyond whether a charge appears in the nightly figure. Review the final amount displayed before purchase and note any taxes, resort or destination charges, and other stated charges. If an inclusion or fee is not clear, do not assume it is included or absent simply because the headline rate is lower.
Use this checklist for each candidate reservation:
- Property and dates: Confirm the same hotel and check-in and check-out dates.
- Room and beds: Match the room category and bed type, rather than relying on similar-sounding descriptions.
- Guest count: Check that both prices apply to the same number of guests.
- Inclusions and charges: Compare breakfast and other stated benefits, as well as taxes, resort or destination charges, and other charges shown for the stay.
- Total payable: Compare the complete amount shown before purchase, not just the first nightly rate displayed.
- Payment terms: Note when payment is due, whether a deposit is required, and what refund conditions apply.
- Cancellation and changes: Record the exact deadline, fee, and whether the rate permits date changes.
- Loyalty eligibility: Check whether the specific rate and channel qualify for points or other program benefits.
- Reservation management: Identify the party the reservation terms direct you to contact about changes, cancellations, and support.
For a simple comparison, keep the two offers open and work through each item side by side. If a key detail is missing or unclear, do not assume it matches the other offer. Find the terms for that exact rate or ask the provider identified in the booking flow before paying.
It can help to write down the two final totals and the most important conditions rather than trying to remember them from separate pages. Include the cancellation deadline and payment timing alongside the price. A modest price difference may matter less to you than a rate that permits cancellation for longer, while a traveler certain of the dates may put more weight on the total cost. The comparison should reflect the trip’s actual priorities, not a general claim about which channel is best.
Why prices and availability can differ by channel
Hotels can vary prices, availability, and conditions across booking channels, so there is no sound basis for assuming direct booking always costs less—or that an OTA always has the lowest price. UK Government and Competition and Markets Authority guidance published on July 5, 2017, says hotels may offer different prices, terms, availability, and conditions through OTAs. It also describes hotels offering some lower rates offline or through private groups. That guidance is specific to its UK context and is not a current, exhaustive account of contract or competition law everywhere.
There is also a more recent, specifically European Union development. In a factsheet dated September 28, 2026, the European Commission says the Digital Markets Act (DMA) requires Booking.com to allow accommodation partners covered by the rule to offer different prices, availability, inventory, or commercial conditions on other online channels, including their own websites. This statement concerns Booking.com and partners within the rule’s scope; it should not be generalized to every booking platform, hotel, or jurisdiction.
These points explain why a price check has to be made at the level of the individual offer. A channel’s general reputation cannot establish what a particular hotel will charge for your dates, what is included, or what rules apply. The rate details on the actual reservation are the relevant evidence for your decision.

The guidance describes differences in availability and inventory across channels; it does not guarantee that the same room or rate will appear everywhere. Compare only offers you can actually book, and verify their conditions before treating one as an alternative to another.

How cancellation, refunds, and changes work
There is no reliable channel-wide rule that direct bookings are easier to cancel or that OTA bookings are less flexible. Read the cancellation policy attached to the exact rate before purchase. Look for the date and time by which cancellation is allowed, the fee after that point, whether a refund is available, and whether changing the dates is permitted. A “refundable” label is not a substitute for reading the deadline and conditions.
Booking.com states that the property determines any cancellation fee and sets the policy for that booking. Its guidance also notes that non-refundable offers can carry charges and may not allow date changes. Expedia’s terms direct customers to the relevant travel provider’s rules and restrictions; its terms also say an administration fee may apply in some cases. These examples show why a platform name alone does not answer what you would owe if plans change. The terms for the particular reservation control.
Before paying, locate the cancellation details in the offer or checkout flow and save a copy of the confirmation and applicable policy. If you might need to change dates, verify that the rate allows changes and check any stated conditions rather than assuming a cancellation policy also permits a modification. If the terms are unclear, ask the party identified in the reservation information and keep the response with your booking records.

A rate may allow cancellation without a stated fee only until a specified deadline, with a different fee or no refund afterward. Record the exact deadline shown for your reservation, including the stated time if one is provided, and avoid relying on a general policy page that may not describe the rate you selected.
Also distinguish a deposit or payment schedule from the cancellation policy. The payment terms tell you when money is due; the cancellation terms explain what happens if you cancel. Check both before booking, and do not infer that a payment made in advance will necessarily be refunded or that a rate paid later is freely cancellable.
How loyalty benefits affect the comparison
Loyalty eligibility is a brand- and rate-specific consideration, not a universal advantage of booking directly. Marriott’s Help Center, updated July 23, 2026, says reservations made through its defined official channels can qualify for Bonvoy benefits when the rate qualifies and the program terms are met. Marriott also states that reservations through third-party online retailers are generally ineligible for points and elite night credit, subject to the full program terms and exceptions.
That policy is Marriott-specific. Do not assume another hotel group uses the same definition of an eligible booking or offers the same benefits. Before treating points or elite-night credit as part of a reservation’s value, check the relevant brand’s current rules for the channel and rate you are considering. Confirm that the rate itself qualifies; a direct channel alone does not establish eligibility.

Marriott’s official-channel guidance defines which channels it treats as official, while its loyalty rules determine whether a particular reservation earns benefits. Those are related but separate checks. If loyalty credit matters to your decision, verify both the channel definition and the program conditions that apply to your stay.

Do not count a possible reward as guaranteed savings until you have confirmed eligibility. For example, if a third-party retailer booking would not earn the points or elite-night credit you expected under Marriott’s stated policy, compare the OTA’s verified total against the direct offer without assuming those benefits will be added later. For another brand, check that brand’s own rules rather than transferring Marriott’s policy to it.
When a direct booking may make sense
A direct offer may be the stronger choice when its verified total and conditions suit your needs, or when a hotel’s own channel is necessary to meet a brand-specific loyalty requirement. It can also be a reasonable choice if the hotel’s terms identify it as the party to contact for the reservation and you prefer to manage the booking there. The evidence does not establish that a direct reservation always provides faster service or better outcomes, so judge the actual offer rather than assuming a service advantage.
- Choose the direct offer if it is the best like-for-like value after accounting for the total cost and included benefits.
- Consider it if the qualifying rate and official channel meet the loyalty program’s rules you have checked.
- Prefer its terms when its cancellation, payment, and change conditions better fit your risk tolerance than the alternatives.
A direct reservation is not automatically a better choice simply because it is made with the hotel. The selected rate can still have restrictions, and loyalty credit still depends on the brand’s rules and the rate’s eligibility. Compare the direct offer with other bookable offers on the same criteria, then give more weight to whichever conditions matter most for your stay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen an OTA may make sense
An OTA can be a suitable option when its specific reservation has the best verified combination of price, room, inclusions, and rules for your trip. It is not enough for the first displayed number to be lower: confirm the total payable and compare the terms with the direct offer. Also identify which provider is responsible for reservation changes and cancellations under that booking.
- Choose the OTA offer if it is genuinely equivalent to the direct offer on the details that matter and its total cost or conditions are better for you.
- Check the provider’s restrictions and any possible administration fee described in the relevant terms.
- Do not count on a hotel loyalty benefit unless the hotel brand’s program confirms that this channel and rate qualify.
An OTA’s lower starting rate may be worth considering if the final amount and the room and booking rules still fit your needs. Equally, a more restrictive or different offer may not be a meaningful saving for a traveler who needs flexibility. Read the reservation-specific provider rules and make the decision using the terms that would apply after purchase, not just the search-results summary.
Use a best-rate guarantee carefully
A hotel price-match or best-rate guarantee is not necessarily a comparison of any two prices that look similar. Marriott’s current best-rate guarantee page, accessed October 10, 2026, requires key attributes to match, including the property, room, guest count, dates, inclusions, and cancellation conditions. A lower headline price for a different room or a less flexible rate is not a like-for-like match under those criteria.
If you are considering a guarantee, read the hotel’s current submission requirements and compare the offers against each specified condition. Do not assume that a rate qualifies merely because it is for the same hotel and dates. A difference in room type, included benefits, or cancellation terms may make the comparison ineligible.

Use the guarantee criteria as a reminder to compare the actual product, even if you are not submitting a claim. Marriott’s criteria are Marriott’s own requirements, not a universal rule for all hotels or price-match offers. If you intend to submit a claim, follow the specific brand’s current procedure and requirements rather than assuming another hotel uses the same matching standard.

A practical decision process before you pay
- Set the trip requirements. Fix the property, dates, guest count, room and bed needs, and any essential inclusion such as breakfast.
- Collect candidate offers. Check the hotel’s direct channel and the OTA offer you are considering. Keep the exact rate descriptions and terms visible.
- Match the details. Use the checklist above to identify differences in room, inclusions, payment, cancellation, and change rules. Eliminate comparisons that do not meet a must-have requirement.
- Compare the total cost. Use the full amount shown for the stay and account for meaningful differences in what is included. Do not treat a lower nightly figure as proof of lower overall cost.
- Check the downside if plans change. Find the cancellation deadline and fee, refund conditions, and whether date changes are allowed. Decide whether any savings justify the restrictions for your circumstances.
- Verify loyalty conditions. If points or elite-night credit matter, confirm the brand’s terms for the exact rate and booking channel.
- Identify who manages the reservation. Read the reservation terms to see which party handles changes, cancellations, and support. Do not assume one channel resolves issues faster.
- Save the terms and confirmation. Keep the booking confirmation and the rate conditions that applied when you booked, so you can refer to the exact reservation if you need assistance.
If one offer is missing a detail you consider essential, pause rather than filling the gap with an assumption. Look for the policy tied to the exact rate or ask the relevant provider before paying. When you have finished comparing, make sure the final checkout page still shows the same room, dates, price, and restrictions you evaluated; if something changed, reassess the offer.

Choosing by the first price shown
A headline rate can omit differences in taxes, charges, or inclusions, and may not represent the full amount payable. Compare the complete total for the stay before choosing.
Treating different rooms as equivalent
Room and bed categories matter. A lower price for a different room is not evidence that the same accommodation is cheaper through that channel. Marriott’s guarantee criteria also treat room equivalence as part of a valid comparison.

Assuming a flexible label means no risk
Cancellation permission may end at a specific deadline, and a fee may apply after it. Non-refundable rates can impose charges and may not permit date changes. Read the full rule attached to the rate.
Counting loyalty value before confirming eligibility
Do not add expected points or elite-night credit to the value of a stay until the relevant hotel program confirms that the booking channel and rate qualify. Policies can differ between brands.
Expecting one channel to guarantee better support
The sources do not establish that hotels or OTAs consistently resolve issues faster. Check the reservation’s stated process and contact the party its terms identify for the matter at hand.
Comparing different payment commitments
A rate that requires a deposit or payment at a different time may not be equivalent to one with different payment conditions. Note the due date, deposit, and refund conditions alongside the price so you understand both the amount and the commitment.
Assuming a platform’s general policy answers every case
A company’s general cancellation guidance is not a substitute for the terms shown for your individual reservation. The property or travel provider may set the applicable policy for that booking. Save the specific terms and confirmation that apply to the rate you chose.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The available guidance supports a careful, offer-by-offer comparison: channel prices and conditions can differ, cancellation obligations depend on the booking’s terms, and loyalty eligibility depends on a brand’s program rules. It does not establish a universal savings rate, a typical commission, a market-wide customer preference, or a service-quality winner between direct booking and OTAs. Nor does a UK pricing guidance page from 2017 settle the law in every place today. Treat claims about a specific price, right, or benefit as specific to the offer, source, date, and jurisdiction that support them.
The useful conclusion is narrower but practical: compare the same stay and read the rules attached to the rate you could actually book. If the offers are not equivalent, decide whether the difference—such as breakfast, payment timing, cancellation flexibility, or loyalty eligibility—is valuable enough to affect your choice. Neither the direct nor OTA label can settle that question on its own.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is booking a hotel directly always cheaper than using an OTA?
No. Hotels may vary prices, availability, and conditions across channels. Compare the full payable amount for the same property, dates, room, guests, inclusions, and cancellation terms; neither channel is universally cheapest.
Are hotel bookings made directly easier to cancel?
Not as a general rule. Check the cancellation deadline, any fee, refund conditions, and whether date changes are allowed for the exact rate. The booking terms determine what applies.
Will I earn hotel points if I book through an OTA?
It depends on the brand, rate, and program rules. Marriott says third-party online retailer bookings are generally ineligible for Bonvoy points and elite-night credit, subject to its full terms and exceptions. Check the hotel brand’s current rules for your specific booking.
What should I compare before choosing between a hotel website and an OTA?
Match the property, dates, room and bed type, guest count, breakfast and other inclusions, total price, payment and deposit terms, cancellation deadline and fee, date-change rules, loyalty eligibility, and which provider manages changes or cancellations.
Who should I contact if I need to change or cancel a reservation?
Check the terms and confirmation for the specific reservation to identify the party responsible for changes and cancellations. Do not assume the hotel or OTA will always handle every booking in the same way.
