HONOR ranked first in mainland China’s smartphone market in Q1 2022, with 15.0 million estimated sell-in shipments and 20% share, according to Canalys. Huawei’s legacy helped give HONOR a head start, but the quarter’s lead also reflected HONOR’s restored supplier access, retail reach and product execution. This was a quarterly shipment ranking—not proof that HONOR led global sales or remained China’s annual leader.
What did HONOR lead in Q1 2022?
The ranking covered mainland China from January through March 2022. Canalys estimated shipments from manufacturers into distribution channels—often called sell-in—not direct consumer purchases, activations or revenue. HONOR’s 15.0 million shipments represented 20% of the market.
| Vendor | Q1 2022 shipments | Share | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|---|
| HONOR | 15.0 million | 20% | +205% |
| OPPO | 13.9 million | 18% | -34% |
| Apple | 13.8 million | 18% | +17% |
| vivo | 12.2 million | 16% | -44% |
| Xiaomi | 10.6 million | 14% | -22% |
| Others | 10.2 million | 13% | -48% |
| Total | 75.6 million | 100% | -18% |
Shares are rounded, so they may not add precisely. Canalys included OnePlus in OPPO’s figures and counted HONOR separately from Huawei beginning in Q1 2021. The result is specific: HONOR topped this quarter’s mainland-China sell-in estimate. It does not establish a full-year, global or current ranking.
How quickly did HONOR recover?
The first-place quarter followed a steep rebound from a weak start as an independent vendor. In Q1 2021, HONOR ranked sixth with nearly 5 million shipments, while vivo led China with 23% share and OPPO had 22%, according to Canalys. Counterpoint reported HONOR’s share rising from 5.1% in January to 8.4% in June 2021.

- August 2021: Counterpoint said HONOR had passed Xiaomi to become China’s third-largest smartphone brand. (Counterpoint)
- Q4 2021: Counterpoint ranked HONOR second among China’s OEMs. Canalys’ shipment table put Apple first at 25% and HONOR at 16%. These rankings need not conflict: analysts may use different methods and vendor groupings. (Counterpoint; Canalys)
- Q1 2022: Canalys placed HONOR first at 20%.
The rise was substantial, but the quarter should be read as a milestone rather than evidence of permanent dominance. Canalys’ full-year 2021 table placed vivo and OPPO first and second, each with 21% share; HONOR was fifth at 12%.
What did Huawei contribute—and what did it not?
HONOR separated from Huawei in Q4 2020 and began appearing separately in shipment tallies in Q1 2021. It was not simply a Huawei subsidiary under another name in the Q1 2022 ranking. Still, the separation did not erase the assets HONOR had built while associated with Huawei.

Brand familiarity and potential customer loyalty
HONOR already had name recognition and an association with Huawei. Counterpoint said that brand image helped attract Huawei loyalists who had not yet switched vendors. That makes former Huawei customers a plausible source of demand, but it does not show that every HONOR buyer came from Huawei or quantify a direct transfer.
People, research and development
Counterpoint reported that HONOR said it had absorbed more than 4,000 R&D professionals as it became independent. That is a company-reported figure, not an independently audited headcount. Retaining experienced teams gave HONOR organizational continuity as it developed products under its own name.

Distribution relationships
Counterpoint also pointed to supplier and distributor relationships, including shareholders connected to major electronics distributors. Those connections supported offline availability in a market where physical retail matters. This inherited familiarity and infrastructure gave HONOR a foundation, not an automatic victory.
Why did separation from Huawei matter?
U.S. sanctions restricted Huawei’s access to critical components and weakened its ability to produce smartphones at scale. Canalys reported that Huawei’s China shipments fell from 30.1 million in Q1 2020 to 14.9 million in Q1 2021, with share dropping from 41% to 16%. The change created room across the market, including in premium Android phones and affordable 5G devices; competing brands such as OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi and Apple also benefited.

After HONOR was spun off, Counterpoint said it could restore ties with component suppliers. Better access and greater operating flexibility mattered because Huawei’s problem was not just demand: component restrictions affected its ability to source and manufacture competitive devices. Separation did not guarantee supply or remove every geopolitical and component-shortage risk, but it gave HONOR a different position from Huawei’s constrained smartphone business.

The recovery was a portfolio story, not one model’s proven contribution. Public market coverage identifies products associated with HONOR’s momentum, but the cited sources do not provide model-level shipments sufficient to attribute the Q1 2022 lead to any single device.

HONOR 50 and HONOR 60
Counterpoint identified the HONOR 50 series as an important recovery product, spanning roughly RMB 2,000–RMB 4,000 at the time. It reported that the HONOR 50 held the leading position in China’s $200–$599 price band for five months after launch. Those are historical market references, not current prices. Counterpoint also cited the HONOR 60 as one of the products supporting momentum into 2022. (Counterpoint; Counterpoint)
Magic3 and Magic V
The Magic3 and Magic V signaled an effort to compete beyond HONOR’s value-oriented roots. Counterpoint described the Magic3 as a leading Android device in the premium segment and noted the Magic V as HONOR’s first foldable. That broader range could address more buyers than a strategy focused only on affordable phones.
Why did the shrinking market matter?
China’s smartphone market was contracting as HONOR reached first place: Canalys estimated 75.6 million Q1 2022 shipments, down 18% year over year. HONOR’s gain therefore was not simply a result of a growing market lifting every vendor. Its share rose amid sharp shipment declines at OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi and others, while Apple grew year over year. The result reflects both HONOR’s recovery and a reshuffling of demand in a difficult quarter.
How much credit belongs to Huawei?
“All thanks to Huawei” overstates the case. Huawei’s brand legacy, former customer base, talent and distribution relationships gave HONOR valuable starting assets. Huawei’s sanctions-related decline also opened space. But HONOR needed independent access to suppliers, a product range that could compete across price tiers and the retail execution to convert opportunity into shipments.
The more accurate explanation is a combination: Huawei helped create HONOR’s foundation, while separation and HONOR’s own operating choices made the Q1 2022 comeback possible. The available rankings establish a quarterly shipment lead; they do not prove that Huawei intentionally handed over market share or that HONOR’s lead endured beyond that period.
