It was profitable that year, then cut its planned electrification and software investment and shifted near-term emphasis toward hybrids. The much larger EV-related loss estimate came later, in March 2026, alongside cancellations of three North American EV programs.
What changed at Honda, and when?
The phrase “losing big on electric in 2025” blurs two different events: Honda’s 2025 strategy adjustment and its more severe 2026 reassessment. Honda’s fiscal year 2025 ended March 31, 2025; its later estimate of up to ¥2.5 trillion in cumulative losses was announced in March 2026 and covered the reassessment and subsequent fiscal periods. It was not Honda’s reported FY2025 net loss.
| Date or period | Honda’s action or result | What the status means |
|---|---|---|
| FY2025, reported May 13, 2025 | ¥1,213.4 billion operating profit and ¥835.8 billion profit attributable to owners of the parent, according to Honda’s FY2025 results. | Reported annual results; Honda remained profitable on these consolidated measures. |
| May 13, 2025 | Honda postponed its plan to establish a comprehensive EV value chain in Ontario, Canada. | Postponed at that point, not canceled in 2025. |
| May 20, 2025 | Honda cut planned electrification and software resource investment through FY2031 from ¥10 trillion to ¥7 trillion, and revised its expectations for EV adoption and hybrid sales. | A reduced and rescheduled investment plan, not a complete end to EV development. |
| March 12, 2026 | Honda canceled development and market launch of three North American EV programs and said cumulative losses associated with its electrification reassessment could reach ¥2.5 trillion. | Cancellations and a preliminary maximum estimate announced in 2026, not FY2025 results. |
| May 2026 | Honda’s later rebuilding-plan summary described approximately ¥0.8 trillion in EV-related investment over a three-year period, alongside resources for hybrid and gasoline vehicles. | A later plan for a three-year rebuilding effort, distinct from the 2025 investment plan. |
The ¥2.5 trillion figure is Honda’s estimate of total losses associated with reassessing its automobile electrification strategy, including later fiscal periods. Honda described the March 2026 component estimates as preliminary; the figure was not presented as a final audited total.
How did Honda’s 2025 plan change?
Less planned spending through FY2031
In its May 20, 2025 Business Briefing, Honda reduced its planned electrification and software resource investment through FY2031 by ¥3 trillion, from ¥10 trillion to ¥7 trillion. Honda linked the change to postponing the Ontario project and changing the timing of dedicated EV production plants. This was a substantial reset to the pace and scale of investment, rather than an announcement that Honda was abandoning EV development.

A stronger near-term role for hybrids
Honda said it expected EVs to account for less than its previous 30% target of global sales in 2030. In response, it positioned next-generation hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) as a key powertrain while the market transitions toward broader EV adoption. Its stated goals were 2.2 million HEV sales in 2030 and 13 next-generation HEV models globally over four years beginning in 2027. These were company targets and plans, not reported sales or already-launched models.
Why did Honda change course?
Honda gave several reasons, which differ somewhat between its 2025 realignment and the deeper 2026 reset. These are Honda’s explanations; the company did not assign independently measured shares of the losses to individual causes.

Honda’s stated reasons in 2025
- EV-market expansion and demand were slower than Honda had expected.
- The timing of investment in the planned Canadian EV value chain and dedicated production plants was being reconsidered.
- In its FY2025 results discussion, Honda’s CFO said the automobile business faced declining unit volume in China and ASEAN and stronger incentives for EV sales in North America, while HEV volume and profitability improved.
Honda’s stated reasons in March 2026
- Honda said U.S. EV-market growth had slowed amid changes to regulations and incentives.
- It cited intensifying Chinese competition in software-defined vehicles and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and said Honda had not delivered better value for money than newer competitors.
- Honda also said U.S. tariffs were pressuring the profitability of gasoline and hybrid vehicles, while weakening Honda’s competitiveness in Asia.
Which EV programs did Honda cancel?
On March 12, 2026, Honda canceled development and market launch of the Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon, and Acura RSX. All three had been planned for production in North America. These named cancellations are separate from the 2025 Ontario postponement: the Ontario project was described as postponed in May 2025, while the three vehicle programs were canceled in March 2026.
Is Honda abandoning electric vehicles?
No. Honda’s 2025 decision cut and rescheduled spending while making hybrids more central in the near term; it did not reject EVs as a long-term direction. In the May 2025 briefing summary, Honda reported CEO Toshihiro Mibe’s formal remarks: “For small-size mobility products including passenger vehicles, Honda believes that electric vehicles (EVs) are the optimal solution for achieving carbon neutrality from a long-term perspective.”

The distinction is between the powertrain Honda expects to sell more of during the transition and the technology it still regards as a long-term solution. Its later May 2026 rebuilding-plan summary also described about ¥0.8 trillion of EV-related investment over three years, while reallocating resources to hybrid and gasoline vehicles. That later plan should not be confused with the ¥7 trillion through-FY2031 investment plan announced in 2025: the periods and planning context differ.

For readers tracking the company’s finances, the central distinction is between annual reported results and an estimate of losses tied to a later strategic reassessment. Honda’s FY2025 operating profit and parent-attributable profit describe results for the year ended March 31, 2025. The up-to-¥2.5 trillion estimate was announced in March 2026, includes subsequent fiscal periods, and was preliminary. They are different measures for different periods, so the latter should not be described as Honda’s FY2025 consolidated loss.

These company-wide figures also do not, by themselves, show how much of Honda’s results came from a particular model, how EV performance compared with each rival, or what the changes mean for any individual investor. A reader comparing automakers should match the fiscal periods and accounting measures and distinguish recurring operating performance from restructuring or impairment costs.
