The company cited a combination of pressures—not tariffs alone—including weaker U.S. EV-market growth, changing policy and incentives, competition from Chinese automakers, and lower profitability in its gasoline and hybrid business amid U.S. tariff changes.
Which Honda EVs did the company cancel?
Honda canceled development and market launch of three electric vehicles it had planned to produce in the United States:
- Honda 0 SUV: a planned Honda-branded electric SUV.
- Honda 0 Saloon: a planned Honda-branded electric saloon, or sedan. “Saloon” is Honda’s official model spelling.
- Acura RSX: a planned Acura electric vehicle.
Honda announced the decision on March 12, 2026, as part of a reassessment of its automobile electrification strategy. These vehicles were canceled before production sales began; they were not recalled or withdrawn from sale. Honda’s announcement
Why did Honda cancel the three EVs?
Honda presented the decision as a response to several changes in the business outlook. Its account does not establish that any one factor independently caused the cancellations.

Tariffs squeezed its existing vehicle business
Honda said changes to U.S. tariffs reduced profitability in its gasoline and hybrid businesses. That pressure mattered alongside the cost and outlook for the planned EVs: the company said beginning production and sales in the current environment could add to long-term losses. U.S. EV growth and policy conditions changed
Honda said U.S. EV-market growth had slowed as regulations eased and incentives were revised. The company said it had pursued EV adoption partly in response to its long-term carbon-neutrality objective and expectations about U.S. policy and incentives; it later reassessed the business case as those conditions changed. Honda saw a widening competitive gap
Honda pointed to Chinese EV makers’ faster development cycles, software-defined vehicle capabilities and driver-assistance technology. It also said redirecting more resources toward EV development had weakened its competitiveness in Asia. These are Honda’s stated assessments of its competitive position. Honda said launching without a viable outlook could hurt customers
In its management briefing, Honda said a launch without a viable business outlook could lead to early discontinuation and inconvenience customers. That helps explain why the company chose to stop the projects before launch rather than proceed with vehicles it did not believe it could sustain. Honda’s management briefing

What Honda said about the losses
Honda’s March 12 figures were estimates tied to its broader electrification-strategy reassessment. The company described the maximum total-loss estimate as preliminary and subject to change; it is not the same measure as the results later reported for one fiscal year.
| Figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| Up to ¥2.5 trillion | Honda’s March 2026 preliminary estimate of maximum losses associated with the strategy reassessment, including possible costs in later periods. Honda’s announcement |
| ¥820 billion to ¥1.12 trillion | Honda’s March estimate of operating expenses for consolidated results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. Honda’s announcement |
| ¥110 billion to ¥150 billion | Honda’s March estimate of its share of losses from equity-method investments, including reassessment of investments amid intensifying competition in China. Honda’s announcement |
| ¥414.346 billion operating loss | Honda’s reported consolidated operating loss for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. Its May filing said EV-related losses and tariff impacts contributed to the decline in operating profit. Honda’s FY2026 results filing |
| ¥423.941 billion loss attributable to owners of the parent | Honda’s separate reported measure for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026; it is not the operating-loss figure. Honda’s FY2026 results filing |
The May fiscal-year results should not be read as a final restatement of the March ¥2.5 trillion maximum estimate: the estimate covered the wider reassessment and potential losses across periods, while the May filing reports particular consolidated results for one fiscal year. In its May 14, 2026 business briefing, Honda described a stronger near-term emphasis on hybrids while keeping its longer-term EV investment flexible according to demand and profitability. The company’s stated plans include:
- Beginning to launch next-generation hybrid models from 2027.
- Aiming to introduce 15 next-generation hybrid models globally by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2030, primarily in North America.
- Planning approximately ¥0.8 trillion in EV-related investment through the three-year period ending March 31, 2029, alongside ¥4.4 trillion for gasoline and hybrid vehicles and ¥1.0 trillion for software technologies.
These are forward-looking company plans, not completed launches or guaranteed investment outcomes. Honda’s May business briefing

What the cancellation means for buyers
The 0 SUV, 0 Saloon and Acura RSX are not consumer products available to buy, so there is no basis for comparing their retail prices, ordering them, or selecting model-specific accessories or replacement parts. For personal-finance purposes, the relevant development is Honda’s shift in planned investment and product emphasis—not a change to ownership costs for these canceled models.
