The move is a serious retreat from near-term launches: the company is shifting more resources toward hybrids while keeping longer-term EV platform and battery work alive. Whether that leaves Honda able to compete when demand grows is still an open question—not an established consequence of the cancellations.
Which Honda EVs were canceled?
On March 12, 2026, Honda said it had canceled development and the planned market launch of three EVs intended for North American production:
- Honda 0 SUV
- Honda 0 Saloon
- Acura RSX
Honda said it judged that beginning production and sales in the current environment, where it saw EV demand declining significantly, would likely lead to further long-term losses. It described the decision as part of a reassessment of its automobile electrification strategy. The cancellations end those three planned launches; they do not, by themselves, establish that Honda has abandoned every EV program.
Why did Honda change course?
Honda attributed the decision to a mix of market changes and shortcomings in its own competitiveness. These are the company’s stated reasons, not independent findings about the market.

- Slower U.S. EV growth: Honda cited easing fossil-fuel regulations and changes to incentives as factors behind slower growth.
- Fiercer competition in China: Honda said customer preferences were shifting toward software-based vehicle features and faster-moving EV manufacturers.
- Weak value for money: Honda acknowledged that it had not delivered better value for money than newer competitors. In its March announcement, it said this had contributed to declining competitiveness.
- Pressure elsewhere in the business: Honda pointed to tariff effects on gasoline and hybrid profitability and weaker product competitiveness in Asia after resources were directed toward EV development.
The explanation matters for the future question. Honda is not blaming only a temporary demand dip; its own account also identifies a product-value and execution problem. But the company’s explanation does not prove whether it can correct those weaknesses.
What does Honda plan to prioritize instead?
Honda’s May 14, 2026 business briefing put hybrids closer to the front of its product plan. The company said it would redirect more development and production resources toward hybrids, which it described as being in high demand.

- Honda plans to begin launching next-generation hybrids in 2027.
- It aims to introduce 15 hybrid models globally by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2030.
- It plans to convert excess capacity at its Ohio plant to gasoline and hybrid production and make all its North American auto plants capable of producing hybrids.
These are announced plans, not completed launches or a guarantee that every target will be met. For a personal-finance-minded buyer, the shift signals where Honda expects to concentrate near-term product development; it does not establish which powertrain will be cheaper over an individual driver’s ownership period.
Has Honda stopped working on EVs?
No. Honda says it will continue preparing a competitive EV hardware platform and researching and developing all-solid-state batteries. President Toshihiro Mibe said Honda would keep “laying the groundwork” for an EV platform so it would be prepared to meet demand when it emerges. That is a commitment to continued groundwork and research, not an announcement of a replacement North American model or a launch date.

Honda’s remaining EV direction also varies by region:
- Japan: Honda plans to expand EVs mainly in the mini-vehicle category, including an N-BOX EV scheduled for 2028.
- China: The May briefing described new-energy vehicles developed with local partners.
- North America: The 0 SUV, 0 Saloon, and Acura RSX launches were canceled. The briefing’s platform and battery work is longer-term groundwork rather than a substitute vehicle announcement.
These plans do not guarantee dates, commercial success, or that a future EV will be offered in every market.
How big is the financial setback?
Honda’s March 12 announcement gave a preliminary maximum estimate of up to ¥2.5 trillion for total expenses and losses related to its strategy reassessment, including potential losses in later fiscal years. The estimate was based on information available that day, included risks and uncertainties, and could differ from amounts ultimately recorded. It is not a finalized loss figure.

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Honda has abandoned three high-profile North American launches and is giving hybrids greater near-term priority, while retaining EV platform preparation, battery research, and region-specific plans. The shift has been building for more than a year. In May 2025 Honda reduced planned electrification investment through FY2031 from ¥10 trillion to ¥7 trillion, citing a postponed Canada EV value-chain project and changed timing for dedicated EV plants. At that point it still called the Honda 0 Series a main pillar of its future EV business; the March 2026 announcement later canceled the 0 SUV and 0 Saloon.

That history makes a return to EV launches less certain than earlier plans suggested, but it does not establish that Honda has lost every chance to compete. Continued research is not equivalent to a market-ready vehicle, and Honda has not yet shown whether future products can match competitors on value, software, timing, or other measures of competitiveness. The headline’s prediction is therefore an argument about risk, not a fact demonstrated by the cancellations.
