The HomTom HT50 was reported at $99.99 in a limited Everbuying promotion in July 2017. That offer expired on July 24, 2017; it is not a current price or buying opportunity. The phone’s standout feature was its rated 5,500mAh battery, but Android 7.0, aging hardware and uncertain modern network compatibility make it a poor default choice for a primary phone in 2026.
What the Everbuying deal actually offered
GizChina reported on July 21, 2017, that Everbuying planned to sell the HomTom HT50 for $99.99 through July 24, with a stated limit of 50 units. That was a time-limited promotional price, not evidence of the phone’s permanent retail price. The original Everbuying promotion page is not currently verifiable, so the contemporary report is evidence that the offer was advertised—not proof of present availability. What the 5,500mAh battery does—and does not—tell you
The battery capacity was unusually large for a low-cost phone in 2017 and was the HT50’s clearest selling point. Some specification sources also list MediaTek Pump Express 2.0 charging, but that is a feature listing, not an independent measurement of charging speed. The rated capacity alone cannot establish how long a phone lasts in real use: screen brightness, signal strength, workload and battery condition all matter. A battery in a device this old may have lost substantial capacity, even if it still charges.
Retailer and database endurance claims are not standardized test results, so they should not be treated as a dependable runtime promise. Sources listing the battery include GSMchoice, Gizmochina and Geekbuying.
How the display and performance compare with the phone’s original price
At the time of the promotion, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a fingerprint reader, dual-SIM support and a large battery made the HT50 an appealingly equipped sub-$100 import on paper. Its 720p display and entry-level MT6737 processor were trade-offs even then. They suit basic tasks better than demanding games or heavy multitasking, and they are not a basis for expecting smooth performance with modern apps.

The promotion and some listings describe 13MP cameras on both sides, while a surviving Geekbuying specification gives the cameras as “8.0MP (SW13.0MP).” That indicates an 8MP sensor with software interpolation to a 13MP output, rather than confirming native 13MP sensors. The safest description is that the phone was marketed with 13MP front and rear cameras, but at least one retailer listing reports 8MP sensors interpolated to 13MP. Commonly listed LTE bands are 1 (2100MHz), 3 (1800MHz), 7 (2600MHz) and 20 (800MHz). Those bands were used in various international markets, but the available specifications do not establish broad U.S. coverage or present-day support from any named carrier. Matching a frequency is not enough: the regional model, carrier certification, VoLTE support, SIM provisioning and the carrier’s retired-network status can all affect whether calls and data work. Do not assume that “unlocked” or “4G” means compatible with a U.S. network. Check the exact model and IMEI with the carrier before paying. Gizmochina’s HT50 specifications · Geekbuying specifications
Android 7.0 is a serious limitation in 2026
The HT50 shipped with Android 7.0 Nougat. No official upgrade path, current security-patch support or maintained manufacturer firmware channel is established by the available product records. Some current apps may refuse to install or require a newer Android version; banking, workplace, health, streaming and authentication apps are especially important to check before relying on the phone. An outdated operating system also means you should not treat the device as having current security protections. GSMchoice lists Android 7.0
Checks to make before buying a used or leftover unit
- Confirm the exact variant. Ask for the model identifier and documented LTE bands; do not rely on a generic “worldwide” claim.
- Verify carrier service first. Ask the carrier to check the IMEI, model, VoLTE support and service eligibility. A matching LTE band alone is not sufficient.
- Test the battery and charging. Check for swelling, excess heat, rapid discharge, erratic charging and unexpected shutdowns. A 2017-era battery may be degraded.
- Check required apps on the actual phone. Confirm the installed Android version and test whether the apps you depend on install and function.
- Test core hardware. Verify internal storage, microSD, SIM slots, calls, LTE data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, cameras, fingerprint reader, charging port and audio jack.
- Get the return terms in writing. Confirm the return window, who pays return shipping, and whether any warranty applies to the specific used device.
- Check parts and accessories. Confirm that a compatible charger, cable, SIM tray and replacement battery are available before assuming the phone can be maintained.
Who might still find an HT50 useful?
It may interest a collector, repair hobbyist or existing owner who needs an inexpensive offline media or test device. For those narrow uses, the buyer can judge the handset without depending on current carrier certification or sensitive apps. Anyone considering it as a connected daily phone should weigh the software and compatibility risks against the cost of a currently supported alternative.
