Home Depot’s 2024 Supply-Chain Breach Exposed Employee Data—not Reported Customer Cards

A 2024 report described a vendor-related exposure of Home Depot employee names, corporate IDs and email addresses—not a reported repeat of the company’s 2014 payment-card breach.

Home Depot’s 2024 supply-chain incident was reported as an exposure of employee information held by an unnamed software-as-a-service (SaaS) vendor—not as a new customer payment-card breach. Dark Reading reported on April 8, 2024, that a “small sample” of employee records, including names, corporate IDs and email addresses, had been exposed and later appeared on a dark-web forum. The report gave no exact employee count or technical explanation of how the exposure occurred.

What happened in the 2024 incident?

Dark Reading reported that a third-party SaaS provider exposed information belonging to a small sample of Home Depot employees. Home Depot reportedly confirmed that employee data was compromised, but the vendor was not named in the coverage. The information later appeared for sale or distribution on a dark-web forum. Dark Reading’s April 8, 2024 report did not establish whether the data was obtained through a vendor account compromise, a configuration error or another failure.

The known categories were employee names, corporate identification numbers and work email addresses. The available report did not establish that passwords, payroll or benefits details, Social Security numbers, financial information or authentication tokens were included. Nor did it give a verified number of affected people.

Was customer payment information exposed?

The 2024 report described employee information; it did not report customer payment-card numbers, passwords or online customer-account data as part of this incident. That is not the same as a definitive statement that no other information was exposed: the published account does not provide that broader assurance.

  • VERSATILE APPLICATION: Ideal for a variety of documents, including contracts, court documents, shipping labels, tax returns and more.
  • LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.

The term “supply-chain breach” here refers to exposure through an outside service provider that held or processed employee information. It does not, on the available evidence, mean that malicious software was distributed through a vendor, that Home Depot’s production network was breached, or that the vendor itself was necessarily hacked. The precise cause was not publicly established in the cited coverage.

Why employee records can still create risk

Names, corporate IDs and work email addresses are not payment credentials, but they can make impersonation attempts more convincing. A scammer can use employee details to tailor messages that appear to come from HR, IT, procurement, a manager or a support team. The exposure can therefore aid phishing, credential harvesting and business-email-compromise attempts even when no password is reported stolen.

Exposure alone does not prove that anyone used the records, took over an account, entered Home Depot systems or committed fraud. The cited coverage does not establish any of those outcomes.

What affected employees can do

  1. Verify requests independently. Treat unexpected messages about employment, payroll, benefits, corporate IDs or internal systems with caution. Do not use links or phone numbers in an unsolicited message; verify through a known internal contact or a manually entered official address.
  2. Watch for targeted lures. Be alert to password-reset links, fake HR or benefits notices, requests for multifactor-authentication codes, vendor invoices, and messages impersonating managers or support staff.
  3. Report suspicious messages. Use Home Depot’s internal security or IT reporting process. Preserve the message and, when possible, its full email headers so responders can examine its origin and routing.
  4. Protect reused credentials. If you reused a password associated with a compromised account, change it anywhere it was reused and enable multifactor authentication where available. Never share an authentication code in response to an unexpected request.

The reporting does not say that credit monitoring was offered or that financial identifiers were exposed, so employees should follow any direct notice from Home Depot or the vendor rather than assume a particular remedy applies.

How it differs from Home Depot’s 2014 payment-card breach

The 2014 incident was a separate attack on Home Depot’s own network and checkout systems. The company said attackers used a vendor username and password to enter its network, obtained elevated privileges and installed custom malware on self-checkout systems. Home Depot reported that payment-card data from up to about 56 million cards was put at risk in U.S. and Canadian stores. Separately, about 53 million email addresses were taken; the company said those files did not contain passwords, payment-card information or other sensitive personal information. Home Depot said the investigation found no impact to Mexico stores or online shoppers and no compromise of debit PINs at that time. Its filing said the malware was eliminated from U.S. and Canadian networks on September 18, 2014. (Home Depot 2014 annual filing; September 2014 company filing; Home Depot’s November 2014 statement.)

Separate later event: a GitHub token exposure reported in 2025

In a separate story, TechCrunch reported on December 12, 2025, that researcher Ben Zimmermann found a Home Depot employee’s GitHub access token publicly exposed. The researcher said it had been exposed since early 2024, remained active until the issue was addressed, and allowed write access to hundreds of private repositories and access to connected cloud infrastructure, including systems related to order fulfillment, inventory management and development pipelines. TechCrunch reported that Home Depot revoked the token after the outlet contacted the company. The report did not establish that the token had been misused or that data had been taken, code altered, inventory manipulated or operations disrupted. TechCrunch’s account is a later, separate exposure report—not evidence that the 2024 SaaS incident caused it.

What Home Depot says about vendor risk

Home Depot’s 2026 proxy statement describes a third-party risk-management program that assesses relevant vendors before onboarding and monitors them afterward. The company says that monitoring includes breach notifications, security-hygiene issues, dark-web exposures and fourth-party risks; it also describes privacy-impact assessments for certain vendors handling personal information. The proxy says the board oversees cybersecurity, business continuity and supply-chain risks. (2026 proxy statement.)

Home Depot’s fiscal 2025 annual report says it relies on internal and external technology providers for systems involving customer, supplier and associate data, as well as forecasting, ordering, inventory, supply-chain management, payment processing, order fulfillment and customer service. The filing identifies failures or compromises involving those systems as business risks. (Fiscal 2025 annual report; annual-report filing.)

These filings document stated governance and monitoring practices; they do not establish the cause of the 2024 exposure or show that every vendor was securely configured. For organizations managing similar dependencies, relevant safeguards include limiting vendor access, minimizing the personal data shared, rotating and revoking exposed credentials quickly, monitoring fourth parties, defining notification obligations, and testing incident-response channels. No single tool substitutes for those controls.

What remains unknown about the 2024 exposure

  • The identity of the SaaS vendor and the number of affected employees.
  • How the information became accessible and when the exposure began or ended.
  • Whether any additional data categories were involved beyond those listed in the report.
  • Whether anyone used the exposed information for phishing, fraud or access to Home Depot systems.
