The reported data included associates’ names, work email addresses and user IDs. A threat actor claimed a much larger set of records was involved, but Home Depot did not confirm that figure. Reports about the April 2024 incident did not identify it as a breach of Home Depot’s customer database or report exposed financial information.
What happened in the Home Depot employee-data incident?
Reports published April 7 and 8, 2024 described an exposure involving a software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider Home Depot used. Home Depot said a small sample of associate information was inadvertently made publicly accessible during system testing. That makes “employee-data exposure through a third-party vendor” more precise than saying Home Depot’s own network was hacked. Tech Times’ April 7, 2024 report covered the company’s confirmation; Cyber Daily’s April 8 report added that the vendor had fallen for a phishing attack.
The phishing detail comes from Cyber Daily’s account. Home Depot’s quoted explanation focused on inadvertent exposure during testing. The available accounts do not establish the full chain of events, including whether data was copied before the public exposure or how many people accessed it.
What information was exposed?
Home Depot described the exposed sample as containing associates’ names, work email addresses and user IDs. Cyber Daily also reported that no financial or banking information was included. The accounts do not establish exposure of Social Security numbers, passwords, payment-card details, payroll records or health information; those categories should not be assumed either way beyond what the reports say.

How many employees were affected?
IntelBroker, the threat actor identified in reporting about a hacking-forum post, reportedly claimed the data related to more than 10,000 Home Depot employees. Home Depot, by contrast, described a “small sample” of associate information. The published accounts do not independently verify the actor’s number or establish how many employees were actually affected. The figure should therefore be treated as a claim, not a confirmed count. Tech Times reported both the claim and Home Depot’s characterization.
Were customers’ data or payment details involved?
The available reporting concerns employee information and describes Home Depot’s consumer base as unaffected. It does not establish that customer accounts, order histories or payment-card data were exposed. That is a narrower conclusion than saying every Home Depot system was definitively cleared: the reported incident is not evidence of a broad customer-data compromise.

What risks does exposed employee information create?
Names, business email addresses and user IDs can help an attacker make a message or call seem legitimate. The practical concern is targeted social engineering: for example, a fake password-reset notice, payroll or benefits request, or prompt asking an employee to approve a multifactor-authentication request. User IDs may also help make a login lure appear internal. These are plausible risks, not evidence that the information was used to steal money or gain access to Home Depot systems.
What should current and former employees do?
- Be cautious with unexpected email, texts, calls and login prompts that refer to Home Depot, a manager, a department or an account issue.
- Do not use message links to reset a password, change payroll details, verify an account or approve an MFA request. Navigate through a known company portal or type its established address yourself.
- Report suspected phishing through Home Depot’s established internal security channel. Former employees should use official company communications or contact channels they already trust if they receive a notice.
- If you reused a password on another service, change it there and use a unique password. Enable multifactor authentication wherever it is available, and review account activity and corporate login alerts.
- Do not download, seek out or redistribute the alleged database. It may contain other people’s personal information, and circulating it creates additional security and privacy risks.
The reported data categories alone do not establish a need for every affected person to freeze credit or buy credit monitoring. Those steps are more relevant when government identification or financial-account information is known to have been exposed; the reports here did not identify those categories.

- The precise vendor and the full technical sequence behind the exposure.
- Whether anyone misused the information or whether additional data categories were involved.
