Neither HOKA nor On is automatically better for running. Compare shoes designed for the same use, then choose the pair that fits comfortably and suits your route and preferred ride. In the models reviewed in 2023 and 2024, HOKA commonly used high-stack cushioning and rocker geometry, while On’s CloudTec design relied on compressible pods. Those are design tendencies—not a verdict on comfort, performance, or safety for every runner.
How to choose between HOKA and On
Start with what you plan to do in the shoes: easy road miles, long runs, speed workouts, racing, or trails. A road trainer is not a like-for-like comparison with a trail shoe or a carbon-plated racer. Then consider fit, comfort, cushioning, stability, ride, weight, durability, and price. Shape’s 2024 comparison evaluated stability, comfort, appearance, and durability; Runner’s World’s 2023 comparison considered fit, geometry, cushioning, energy return, and price.

Thomas Neuberger, co-founder of Big Run Media, advised runners to put comfort first rather than buying on appearance, and to select shoes for their intended use. He also recommended trying several shoes in the same category across brands. Raj Hathiramani, a certified coach with the Road Runners Club of America, offered a broad distinction: HOKA may suit runners seeking more cushioning and support, while On may appeal to those seeking a neutral, responsive shoe. That is an expert’s generalization, not a guarantee about every model or runner.
Daily road trainers: Clifton 9 vs. Cloudsurfer
Runner’s World paired the HOKA Clifton 9 with the On Cloudsurfer as daily trainers. The Clifton 9 was characterized as a light, comfortable-pace shoe with supple foam for easy and long runs; some testers wanted more energy return. The Cloudsurfer’s pods were described as collapsing in sequence through the stride, creating smooth heel-to-toe transitions. Its fit was called roomy, but its rocker may not suit everyone.

|---|---|---|---|
| HOKA Clifton 9 | 8.5 oz; 5 mm drop | 7.5 oz | Light and supple for easy and long runs; some testers wanted more energy return. |
| On Cloudsurfer | 8.6 oz; 10 mm drop | 7.2 oz | Smooth transitions and roomy fit; the rocker is not for everyone. |
Weights and drops are the figures Runner’s World reported for those specific generations. They should not be generalized to other sizes, sexes, or later versions.
Maximum cushioning: Bondi 8 vs. Cloudmonster
For high-cushioning options, Runner’s World compared the HOKA Bondi 8 and On Cloudmonster. Its description framed the Bondi as a plush recovery-day shoe: the oversized heel can absorb awkward strikes, and the midsole was described as supple. The trade-off noted was added weight versus its predecessor. The Cloudmonster combines two staggered pod layers with a rocker for smoother transitions, though it may feel clunky to some runners.

Trail, budget, stability, and race shoes are separate comparisons
Runner’s World’s 2023 article also matched models by category: HOKA Rincon 3 with On Cloudrunner for budget trainers, HOKA Rocket X 2 with On Cloudboom Echo 3 for racing, and HOKA Speedgoat 5 with On Cloudvista for trails. It described the Cloudrunner as more stability-oriented and heavier than the Rincon 3; the Cloudboom Echo 3 was described as suited to powerful, fast efforts but less comfortable at slow paces. These are observations about the named models, not a timeless ranking of either brand.

- The ultra-cushioned game-changer
- One of the hardest working shoes in the HOKA lineup, the Bondi 9 delivers peak plushness for everyday miles. Overhauled from top to bottom, we’ve increased the stack height and added a new premium foam midsole to deliver that soft, resilient ride that’s become synonymous with the Bondi. Elevated with a 3D molded collar and structured knit upper with zonal breathability, this ultra-cushioned cult favorite has been finished with Durabrasion rubber to combat high wear zones.
- Engineered mesh with 55% recycled polyester
- Reflective upper details
- Extended heel pull
Shape’s review, updated November 14, 2024, named the HOKA Mach X 2 its overall pick, citing workout versatility and a rocker, and selected On Cloudboom Echo 3 for race day, noting its lightweight feel and firmer foam. It also selected HOKA Arahi 7 for overpronation, citing stability features and wide-width availability. These are editorial picks, not clinical prescriptions; choose based on fit and your needs rather than treating a category award as a medical recommendation.

Runner’s World described the reviewed HOKA models as tending toward high-stack foam and more pronounced rocker geometry. It described On’s CloudTec pods as compressing on landing and firming for toe-off. These construction differences can shape how a shoe feels, but they do not establish that one brand is faster, safer, or better for all runners. The sources do not provide a brand-wide performance statistic or comparative study.
