The headline figure refers to Hitachi Energy’s September 4, 2025 announcement of more than $1 billion in U.S. manufacturing investment—not its latest stated total. By September 15, 2026, after announcing a separate Mississippi transformer factory, the company said its U.S. manufacturing expansion commitment had reached around $1.5 billion. The spending is aimed at expanding grid-equipment production, including large power transformers; AI data centers are one of several demand drivers the company cites.
What is Hitachi investing $1 billion in?
Hitachi Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., announced more than $1 billion in U.S. grid-equipment manufacturing investment on September 4, 2025. The program included about $457 million for a new large power transformer facility in South Boston, Virginia, along with expansions at existing facilities. The company said the investment would help meet demand from AI data centers, U.S. manufacturing and other sectors, while supporting grid expansion and modernization. Large power transformers are used in high-voltage transmission and in power generation and industrial applications. They are part of the infrastructure needed to move electricity through the grid and serve large loads; they are not consumer devices that households can buy to increase their own power supply.
Is Hitachi’s U.S. investment still $1 billion?
No. The $1 billion figure describes the initial September 2025 announcement. On September 15, 2026, Hitachi Energy announced a $528 million transformer factory in Gallman, Mississippi, and said its U.S. manufacturing expansion commitment was then around $1.5 billion. That later company-stated total is the more recent figure. Hitachi Global’s September 15, 2026 announcement

The roughly $1.5 billion is Hitachi Energy’s stated commitment across its U.S. manufacturing expansion; it should not be treated as a sum calculated by adding the South Boston and Gallman project costs. The announcements do not establish that those two project figures account for the full total or provide an independently audited tally of spending completed.
Where are the transformer factories, and what is their timeline?

How much electricity do AI data centers use?
The announcements identify AI data centers as one reason electricity demand is growing, alongside U.S. manufacturing and other sectors. They do not quantify AI’s share of U.S. electricity use, so the investment figures cannot be used to calculate how much power AI consumes or what portion of the grid buildout is attributable to it.
Hitachi Energy has also described work with NVIDIA on an 800-volt direct-current power system for AI data centers. In a March 23, 2026 update, the company said the effort involved digitally simulating the electrical chain from the grid to the data-center rack using digital twins. That describes a development and simulation effort, not evidence that a finished system has been broadly deployed or that it has delivered a measured efficiency gain. What the investment does—and does not—tell households
For household budgets, these announcements are evidence of planned industrial investment, not a forecast of a specific change in electricity bills. The releases do not estimate effects on residential rates, identify how project costs will be financed, or say how quickly new equipment will affect grid capacity. Any effect on bills would depend on factors beyond the announced factory spending, including how utilities and regulators handle broader grid investments.
The announced amounts, jobs and schedules are company-reported project figures and commitments. They indicate the scale and stated purpose of Hitachi Energy’s manufacturing plans, but are not independently audited outcomes or a measure of electricity demand caused by AI.
