Short answer: Hitachi Construction Machinery is the more focused equipment company, built around hydraulic excavators, mining machines, and a parts-and-services value chain. Caterpillar combines construction and mining equipment with power and energy systems, engines, locomotives, electrified solutions, and financing. They compete in parts of the same surface-equipment markets, but they do not have the same business mix, geographic disclosures, or reporting structure.
That difference matters to investors. A Caterpillar result reflects several industrial end markets and a finance arm, while a Hitachi Construction Machinery result is more closely tied to excavators, mining equipment, aftermarket support, and its regional expansion priorities. The available company materials do not provide a matched set of valuation, margin, cash-flow, debt, and share-price data, so this comparison explains how to analyze the businesses without declaring one stock the better buy.

New machinery sales center on excavators
Hitachi Construction Machinery describes new machinery sales as one of its two core business areas. Hydraulic excavators are the center of gravity, spanning compact, construction, and mining categories. The company also presents mining machines within this equipment portfolio. This focus gives an investor a relatively clear way to think about demand: customers buy machines for construction, mining, and related heavy-work applications, and the company later supports those machines through parts and services.

The company identifies sales and service capability, manufacturing capability, and co-creation capability as strengths. Those are management’s descriptions of capabilities, not independent measures of profitability or market share. They nevertheless explain the intended operating model: sell equipment, maintain a customer relationship through service, and develop solutions with users rather than treating the original machine sale as the entire transaction.
The value-chain business extends beyond the first sale
Hitachi Construction Machinery’s second core area is its value-chain business, centered on parts and services. This can include the support required to keep an installed machine working, such as replacement parts, maintenance, and service relationships. The strategic importance is that equipment revenue and aftermarket activity behave differently. A machine sale is generally a large, periodic purchase tied to a customer’s capital budget; parts and service demand can follow the installed base over a longer period.
Investors should not assume that the value-chain business has a particular margin, growth rate, or revenue share unless the company reports that measure for the period being analyzed. The useful analytical question is whether parts and services are expanding, retaining customers, and making the overall business less dependent on new-machine orders.
Growth priorities point to North America, Latin America, mining, and support
Hitachi Construction Machinery lists four growth priorities: its North American business, its Latin American business, mining, and parts and services. These priorities combine geography, end market, and business model. North American and Latin American expansion can change dealer, distribution, and service economics; mining can increase exposure to large equipment projects and commodity-linked customer spending; parts and services can deepen the relationship with the installed base.
The company’s investor page says overseas sales account for more than 80% of revenue. That figure is company-reported and should be read with its definition and reporting period. It is not interchangeable with Caterpillar’s statement that it operates on every continent: one is a sales mix ratio, while the other describes global presence.
Its Americas structure changed in 2022
Hitachi Construction Machinery says it began developing its own Americas business in March 2022. Before that change, it operated in the region through a joint venture with Deere & Company. Hitachi Ltd. sold approximately half its shares in August 2022, after which Hitachi Construction Machinery ceased to be a consolidated Hitachi Group subsidiary.

That history matters when comparing periods. Distribution arrangements, ownership, consolidation, and reported segment relationships can affect the apparent trend in revenue or profit. An investor comparing pre-2022 and post-2022 numbers should read the company’s basis-of-presentation notes rather than treating every historical series as perfectly like-for-like.

How Caterpillar makes money
Three industrial segments cover more than construction equipment
Caterpillar reports Construction Industries, Resource Industries, and Power & Energy as its principal industrial segments. Construction Industries serves construction-related equipment needs. Resource Industries serves mining, heavy construction, quarry, and aggregates customers. Power & Energy extends the portfolio into energy and industrial applications.
The company’s product description is correspondingly broad. It includes construction and mining machinery, off-highway engines, industrial gas turbines, diesel-electric locomotives, generator sets, and electrified power solutions. A Caterpillar investor therefore owns exposure to several equipment and power businesses rather than a pure excavator or mining-machine specialist.
Resource Industries is where the direct overlap is clearest
Caterpillar’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies Hitachi Construction Machinery among its global surface-equipment competitors. The filing describes Resource Industries customers in mining, heavy construction, quarry, and aggregates and lists equipment alongside fleet-management, equipment-analytics, autonomous-machine, safety, and mining-performance solutions.
This is meaningful competitive overlap, but it does not mean the companies are identical. Hitachi Construction Machinery’s disclosed center of gravity is machinery plus its parts-and-services value chain. Caterpillar’s Resource Industries business is one segment inside a company that also has Construction Industries, Power & Energy, and Financial Products.

Financial Products adds a financing dimension
Caterpillar reports Financial Products alongside its industrial segments. Financing can support equipment purchases and create financial-asset and credit exposure in addition to manufacturing exposure. It also means that consolidated results should not be interpreted as if every dollar came from selling or servicing machines.

When comparing the companies, separate industrial operating performance from financing activity where the filings provide that detail. Consider receivables, credit quality, funding costs, and portfolio performance as part of the Caterpillar analysis rather than folding them into an equipment-only comparison.
Scale and stated strategy
Caterpillar reported $67.6 billion in 2025 sales and revenues. That is a Caterpillar figure for the stated year and does not establish relative scale, profitability, or valuation against Hitachi Construction Machinery because the cited materials do not provide a matching Hitachi table on the same reporting basis.
Caterpillar’s annual report organizes its strategy around commercial excellence, advanced technology leadership, and transforming how it works. In the 2025 annual report, Chairman and CEO Joe Creed wrote: Our customers are essential to meeting that demand, and Caterpillar equips them to do it.
The statement communicates the company’s customer and technology framing; it is not a forecast of future returns.

Shared markets
The overlap is strongest in construction equipment, mining machinery, and related surface applications. Customers in these markets evaluate machine productivity, availability, safety, fuel or energy use, dealer and service support, technology, and total cost of ownership. Both companies can therefore encounter the same customer capital-spending cycles and some of the same competitive bids.
Different company-wide exposure
Hitachi Construction Machinery’s disclosed structure makes excavators, mining equipment, and the parts-and-services value chain central to the company story. Caterpillar combines comparable equipment markets with power and energy products, engines, locomotives, electrified systems, and financing. A company-wide revenue or earnings comparison must adjust for those different mixes.
For example, a weak construction-equipment quarter could affect both companies, but Caterpillar’s consolidated result may also reflect Power & Energy or Financial Products. Conversely, a mining or aftermarket trend may have a more concentrated effect on Hitachi Construction Machinery. The direction and magnitude cannot be inferred without the period’s segment results.

What the difference means for an investor
1. Start with business mix, not the headline sales number
Map each company’s revenue and operating profit to equipment, parts and services, power and energy, and financing where the filings disclose those categories. Hitachi Construction Machinery explicitly describes its value-chain business. Caterpillar separately identifies industrial segments and Financial Products. This mapping prevents an equipment specialist from being compared with a diversified industrial and finance group as though they had identical economics.
2. Match end markets and geography
Construction, mining, quarry and aggregates, energy, and industrial power do not move in lockstep. Review each company’s segment and geographic tables for the same fiscal periods. Treat Hitachi Construction Machinery’s “more than 80%” overseas-sales statement as a reported sales-mix fact, not as a proxy for global market share. Treat Caterpillar’s every-continent description as evidence of geographic reach, not as a directly comparable percentage.
3. Examine the aftermarket and installed base
Parts and service activity can influence customer retention, machine uptime, and revenue stability. For Hitachi Construction Machinery, ask how the value-chain business is progressing and how it supports the company’s stated growth plan. For Caterpillar, inspect the parts, support, fleet-management, analytics, autonomous-machine, safety, and mining-performance offerings described in its filings.
Use company-reported measures consistently. Do not substitute a generic industry assumption for a disclosed parts or service margin, because neither company’s cited materials establish a common metric that can be compared directly.
4. Separate cyclical exposures
Assess construction, mining, energy, and customer capital spending separately. Mining demand can be influenced by commodity economics and mine development; construction demand can reflect building and infrastructure activity; power and energy add different industrial drivers. The cited filings establish these end markets but do not forecast their future cycles, so an investment case needs current management guidance and independent scenario work.

5. Adjust for ownership and reporting changes
Hitachi Construction Machinery’s move to its own Americas business in March 2022 and the change in Hitachi Ltd.’s ownership in August 2022 are essential context for historical comparisons. Check whether prior periods were consolidated, reported through a joint venture, or presented on a revised basis. A simple year-over-year percentage can be misleading when the perimeter of the business changed.

6. Use matched financial and valuation data
A proper stock comparison requires the same-date numbers for revenue, operating margin, free cash flow, debt, cash, capital expenditure, dividends, buybacks, shares outstanding, and valuation multiples. Convert currencies using a stated convention and align fiscal years. The cited sources do not establish a complete matched dataset, and they contain no share-price, exchange-rate, forward-return, or current-multiple conclusion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical comparison workflow
- Set the date. Choose a cutoff date and use the latest annual and interim filings available for both issuers. Hitachi Construction Machinery’s investor-relations materials list first-quarter results for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, while second-quarter results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 were scheduled for October 29, 2026. Confirm whether those materials were available at your analysis date.
- Build a segment map. List Hitachi Construction Machinery’s new machinery and value-chain businesses, then list Caterpillar’s Construction Industries, Resource Industries, Power & Energy, and Financial Products. Record revenue and operating measures only where each company defines them clearly.
- Normalize the periods. Hitachi Construction Machinery announced results for the year ended March 31, 2026 on April 24, 2026. Caterpillar’s cited full-year figure is for calendar 2025. Do not compare those periods without labeling the mismatch or using interim data to create a consistent window.
- Read geographic disclosures carefully. Capture regional revenue, production, and dealer information from each filing. Do not turn the “more than 80% overseas sales” statement into a claim about Caterpillar or global market share.
- Test the cycle. Create separate scenarios for construction, mining, power and energy, and customer financing. Identify which segment would carry the downside and which could offset it.
- Check cash and balance-sheet resilience. Compare operating cash flow, capital expenditure, debt, liquidity, pension or other obligations, and financing receivables on a consistent basis. The source materials here do not supply those matched figures, so they must be collected from the latest filings.
- Only then examine valuation. Use a clearly dated share price, the same currency convention, and a stated earnings or cash-flow denominator. A low multiple can reflect a cyclical peak, a balance-sheet concern, or a different business mix; a high multiple can reflect expected growth or quality but is not automatically justified.
Common comparison mistakes
- Comparing Caterpillar’s $67.6 billion directly with an unaligned Hitachi figure. The periods, currencies, consolidation bases, and segment mixes must match first.
- Calling the companies pure peers. They overlap in surface equipment, but Caterpillar also has Power & Energy and Financial Products.
- Treating management descriptions as performance proof. Terms such as capability, technology leadership, or growth priority describe strategy; they do not by themselves establish returns, market share, or margins.
- Ignoring the 2022 Americas transition. The change from a joint-venture arrangement to Hitachi Construction Machinery’s own Americas business can affect historical comparability.
- Assuming aftermarket economics are identical. Both companies support equipment, but their disclosures may define parts, services, and support differently.
- Using current prices without a timestamp. Share prices, exchange rates, analyst estimates, and valuation multiples change. None of those current-market figures is established by the cited company materials.
Which investor profile might prefer which business exposure?
A focused-equipment thesis
An investor who wants a more concentrated exposure to excavators, mining machines, and the parts-and-services value chain may find Hitachi Construction Machinery’s business easier to isolate conceptually. The trade-off is concentration: results can be more sensitive to the company’s selected equipment categories, mining conditions, regional execution, and the development of its Americas platform.
A diversified industrial thesis
An investor seeking a broader industrial portfolio may value Caterpillar’s combination of construction, mining, power and energy, engines, locomotives, electrified solutions, and financing. The trade-off is analytical complexity. Consolidated results incorporate more end markets and a finance operation, so a single company-wide growth rate may conceal differences among segments.
These are exposure descriptions, not recommendations. Whether either stock is attractive depends on the price paid, expected earnings and cash flow, balance-sheet risk, and the investor’s tolerance for cyclical and currency exposure.
What to monitor in the next disclosures
For Hitachi Construction Machinery, monitor North American and Latin American execution, mining demand, new-machine orders, parts-and-service progress, and any explanation of how the post-2022 Americas structure is developing. Its investor-relations materials-download page lists recent reports and scheduled releases, while its IR news page records the April 24, 2026 announcement for the year ended March 31, 2026.
For Caterpillar, monitor Construction Industries, Resource Industries, and Power & Energy separately; review Financial Products; and track equipment demand, technology and fleet solutions, dealer conditions, and customer financing. The company’s 2025 annual report and 2025 Form 10-K provide the cited segment and competitor context.
Bottom line
Hitachi Construction Machinery and Caterpillar are competitors in construction and mining equipment, but they represent different investment exposures. Hitachi Construction Machinery is centered on excavators, mining machines, and a parts-and-services value chain, with North America, Latin America, mining, and aftermarket support as stated priorities. Caterpillar spans those equipment markets while adding Power & Energy, engines, locomotives, electrified systems, and Financial Products; it reported $67.6 billion in 2025 sales and revenues.
