The report also described the boating accident near Hillarys Boat Harbour that killed Jones, 44, and noted a separate fundraiser started by his partner. It does not establish how much either campaign raised or whether the children made the trip.
What happened near Hillarys Boat Harbour
In its May 27, 2019 account, The West Australian reported that Derek Jones, 44, died after a boating accident shortly after he and his friend Leon Mudra left Hillarys Boat Harbour in Western Australia on a fishing trip. The newspaper said both men were thrown from their dinghy after losing control. It reported that the boat continued running and circled, and that its propeller struck Jones in the head. Mudra survived and was treated for hypothermia and shock. (The West Australian, May 27, 2019.)
This is the newspaper’s contemporaneous account, not an official accident finding. The report does not provide an investigation record or establish the precise causes of the accident.
What the funeral travel fundraiser was for
The report said Jones’s former partner, Robyn Jones, had launched a GoFundMe with a $3,000 goal to pay for flights to Perth for three of his six children, who lived in Brisbane. His 22-year-old son Curtis Jones said, “It would mean the world to be able to say goodbye to my dad.”

The article also mentioned a separate GoFundMe started by Jones’s partner, Jodi Jarrett, to help pay for the father. It did not state the amount sought for that campaign.
What family and friends said about Jones
Curtis Jones described his father as someone who was available to others: “He always put a smile on everyone’s face, he was always willing to help someone out – he was always willing to accept a phone call if someone needed to talk.” He also recalled, “Whenever I needed to I could call him and talk to him — he would come and visit.”

Leon Mudra and his partner, Veronica Mudra, said: “He was a beautiful father, brother, partner. We don’t know how we are going to continue without him in our lives.”
What is not established about the campaigns
The 2019 article does not report the final amount raised by either fundraiser, whether either page remains online, whether the children traveled to Perth, or the funeral arrangements. Its fundraising information is historical; the article alone cannot confirm that either page is a current or valid way to donate.

General boating-safety context
In a separate ABC transcript about an unrelated 2007 incident, Water Police Sergeant Mark Platt discussed carrying an emergency beacon, keeping safety equipment accessible, wearing life jackets, maintaining a boat, and telling sea rescue where a boat is going and when it is expected back. He also said people should generally stay with an overturned vessel when conditions allow, because rescuers may have difficulty locating someone in the water. That general advice is not evidence about the circumstances of Jones’s 2019 accident or what caused it. (ABC, December 28, 2007.)
