Dwayne Johnson topped Forbes’ highest-paid actors ranking five times from 2016 through 2025. The other annual leaders were Mark Wahlberg, George Clooney, Tyler Perry and Adam Sandler. The figures below are Forbes earnings estimates—not a consistent measure of acting salaries alone—and some are reported before representation fees while others are also shown after fees.

Who topped Forbes’ highest-paid actors list each year?

This is a year-by-year ranking of the top earner in each annual list, not a cumulative ranking of actors’ earnings across the decade. Amounts are in U.S. dollars.

Ranking year Top actor Reported earnings Context
2016 Dwayne Johnson $64.5 million Forbes estimate, reported by TIME.
2017 Mark Wahlberg $68 million Forbes estimate, as listed in the annual compilation.
2018 George Clooney $239 million Forbes estimate; the compilation says the total was mainly tied to the June 2017 Casamigos tequila sale.
2019 Dwayne Johnson $89.4 million Forbes estimate, as listed in the annual compilation.
2020 Dwayne Johnson $87.5 million Forbes estimate, as listed in the annual compilation.
2021 Dwayne Johnson $270 million Forbes estimate, as listed in the annual compilation.
2022 Tyler Perry $175 million Forbes estimate, as listed in the annual compilation.
2023 Adam Sandler $97 million Forbes estimate, as listed in the annual compilation.
2024 Dwayne Johnson $103 million gross; $88 million after fees Forbes estimate. Forbes Australia’s account reports both figures.
2025 Adam Sandler $60 million gross; $48 million after fees The annual compilation gives $60 million; a Forbes article excerpt reports $48 million after fees.

The 2017–2023 figures above are supported by the annual compilation, which links to the corresponding Forbes editions. For the 2025 result, the after-fees figure comes from the available Forbes article excerpt; it is shown alongside the compilation’s gross figure rather than treated as directly interchangeable.

How should you interpret the earnings figures?

They are estimates, not a salary ledger

Forbes’ annual earnings estimates can encompass revenue beyond acting pay. They should not be read as a count of what an actor earned solely from film or television salaries. Clooney’s 2018 total illustrates the distinction: the compilation attributes most of the $239 million to the Casamigos sale, not acting compensation.

Gross and after-fee amounts are different measures

For its 2024 ranking, Forbes Australia describes the estimates as pretax calendar-year earnings less assumed representation fees—typically 10% for agents, 10% for managers and 5% for lawyers, although an actor may not use all three. That is why the 2024 and 2025 rows identify gross and after-fee amounts separately where both are available. Do not compare one basis with the other as if they were the same figure.

Project release year may differ from payment year

Forbes Australia says its 2024 ranking credited compensation to the year a project was released, even when an upfront fee had been paid years earlier or back-end participation or a buyout would be paid later. Historical editions may use different measurement windows, so the series should not be assumed to apply one identical method to every year.

Who led the most years?

Johnson was the most frequent leader, topping five of the ten annual rankings: 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2024. Sandler led twice, in 2023 and 2025. Wahlberg, Clooney and Perry each led once.

The decade’s largest listed total was Johnson’s $270 million in 2021, while the smallest was Sandler’s $60 million gross estimate in 2025. Those are nominal estimates from different annual editions, not a like-for-like comparison of take-home pay or acting wages.
