Highest CD Rates on February 13, 2025: What the Comparison Showed

On February 13, 2025, the highest listed CD APY in one comparison was 4.65% (CommunityWide Federal Credit Union, 6-month CD). The headline's 4.35%–4.73% range does not match that source.

On February 13, 2025, the highest listed CD offer in a GOBankingRates comparison, republished by AOL, was CommunityWide Federal Credit Union’s 6-month CD at 4.65% APY. That is the most direct answer to what the top CD rate was on that date. The headline’s 4.35% to 4.73% range does not match that comparison, whose highest offers by term ran from 4.30% to 4.65%, so the headline range should not be read as confirmed. Because that date is more than a year and a half ago, none of these figures describe an offer you can open today.

What the February 13, 2025 comparison listed

The GOBankingRates comparison, dated February 13, 2025, focused on APY and considered banks and credit unions with nationwide availability. For each term it showed a national average APY and the highest APY it listed, along with the provider. Its FAQ put the top result this way: “As of Feb. 13, 2025, CommunityWide Federal Credit Union offers the highest paying CD rate at an APY of 4.65% for their 6-month CD.”

Term National average APY Highest APY shown Provider
3 months 1.30% 4.60% Brilliant Bank
6 months 1.82% 4.65% CommunityWide Federal Credit Union
1 year 1.86% 4.51% EagleBank
18 months 2.12% 4.39% All In Credit Union
2 years 1.67% 4.30% Amboy Direct
3 years 1.58% 4.30% KS StateBank
5 years 1.59% 4.30% KS StateBank

The gap between the two columns is the main thing to notice. The highest listed offers sat between 4.30% and 4.65%, while the national averages in the same table were between 1.30% and 2.12%. The highest figure is one institution’s advertised offer for one term on one day. The average is a broad measure and tells you what a typical account paid, not what was available to a shopper. The comparison itself notes that rates are subject to change.

Why the headline range does not match

The headline promises returns of 4.35% to 4.73% for terms from 3 months to 5 years. The comparison’s highest offers for those same terms run from 4.30% to 4.65%. Neither the 4.35% floor nor the 4.73% ceiling appears in its table. The mismatch could come from a different table, a different set of products, or an error in the headline. The available evidence does not show which, so the headline range should not be used as a verified figure for February 13, 2025.

National averages are a different measure

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation publishes a national rates benchmark for CDs. Its February 2025 page was updated on February 24, 2025, and reports rates as of February 18, 2025. For that date it shows a national average of 1.45% for a 3-month CD and 1.31% for a 60-month CD. The FDIC states that these national averages represent $10,000 and $100,000 product tiers.

Those figures cannot be used to check the February 13 offers. They were measured five days later, they are averages rather than advertised offers, and they come from a different method than the comparison’s own averages. The gap between the FDIC’s 1.45% for 3 months and the comparison’s 1.30% for 3 months does not show a rate change, because the two sources use different universes of products and different measures.

What “guaranteed” means for a CD

A CD pays a fixed APY for its stated term, which the comparison describes as fixed rates with a maturity date. The rate is set when you open the account. It is not guaranteed after maturity, and the rate you are offered when the CD renews may be different from the original. Withdrawing before maturity can trigger an early-withdrawal penalty, which can reduce or erase the interest you earned.

Deposit insurance is a separate question. Banks are insured by the FDIC and credit unions by the NCUA, and coverage is subject to limits that apply per depositor, per institution, and per ownership category. Confirm the current limit and the insurer in the institution’s own disclosures.

How to compare CD offers before you open one

  1. Check the date on any rate table. A figure dated February 13, 2025 is a historical snapshot.
  2. Compare offers with the same term. A 6-month CD and a 5-year CD are not interchangeable, even if their APYs look close.
  3. Use APY, the measure the comparison used, so that compounding is already included.
  4. Check the minimum deposit and eligibility rules. Credit unions, for example, may require membership.
  5. Confirm the insurer. Look for FDIC insurance on a bank or NCUA insurance on a credit union.
  6. Read the early-withdrawal penalty in the account disclosure, and calculate what it would cost at your deposit size.
  7. Read the maturity and renewal rules. Find out whether the CD renews automatically and at what rate.
  8. Take the APY from the provider’s current rate disclosure on the day you open the account, not from an aggregator table.

Historical comparisons are useful for seeing the range of offers at a point in time and how the top rate sits relative to the average. They are not a substitute for a current disclosure, and the February 2025 figures are no longer a basis for choosing an account.
