High-Yield Savings Accounts vs. Money Market Accounts: What’s the Difference?

High-yield savings and money market accounts are both deposit options, but neither label guarantees a rate or access feature. Compare current APY conditions, fees, transaction rules, and deposit coverage.

A high-yield savings account is a savings account marketed for earning more interest than a regular savings account; a money market account is a distinct deposit-account type offered by banks and credit unions. Neither label guarantees a particular APY, fee, balance requirement, or way to withdraw money. Compare each provider’s current disclosures and choose based on the rate you can actually earn and how you need to access your cash.

What’s the difference?

The main difference is the account type and the access features a provider may offer—not a guaranteed difference in interest rate or safety. “High-yield” describes a savings account positioned to pay more than a regular savings account. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) defines a money market account as a special type of account offered by banks and credit unions. The CFPB’s educational material describes high-yield savings accounts as earning more interest than regular savings accounts, but it does not establish a regulated APY threshold for the term “high-yield.”

Both can hold savings as deposit accounts, but account names alone do not tell you what you will earn or how easily you can use the money. A money market account might offer checks or other payment access; a high-yield savings account may suit someone content to move money electronically. These are possibilities, not rules that apply to every account. The account agreement and disclosures determine the actual terms.

What to compare High-yield savings account Money market account
Account description A savings account positioned to earn more than a regular savings account; “high-yield” has no fixed APY threshold established by the CFPB. A special type of account offered by banks and credit unions, as defined by the CFPB.
Interest Current APY and conditions are provider-specific; no comparable current market rate is established here. Current APY and conditions are provider-specific; no comparable current market rate is established here.
Checks or payment access Check, debit, ATM, and transfer access depend on the account’s terms. Some accounts may allow checks, but the CFPB cautions that money market accounts are generally not suited to day-to-day business because of restrictions on their use. Other access features depend on the terms.
Minimums, fees, and limits Opening deposit, balance requirements, fees, and transaction limits depend on the provider’s disclosures. Opening deposit, balance requirements, fees, and transaction limits depend on the provider’s disclosures.
Deposit protection Eligible deposits at an FDIC-insured bank are subject to FDIC rules; coverage depends on depositor, bank, and ownership category. Eligible money market deposit accounts at an FDIC-insured bank are subject to the same FDIC rules; the account label does not create separate coverage.

Regulation DD requires disclosures about matters such as APY, balance requirements, transaction limitations, and charges. Use those disclosures—not the account name or a headline rate—to make the comparison.

What does each label tell you—and what does it leave out?

“High-yield” tells you how the provider positions a savings account, not what minimum return you are entitled to earn. It does not set a guaranteed rate, and it does not by itself tell you whether the rate is available on your entire balance or only under certain conditions. Likewise, “money market account” identifies an account type; it does not promise a particular APY, checkbook, debit card, or transaction allowance.

For either account, the disclosure is the practical guide. Look for the APY, the balance ranges to which it applies, any balance needed to qualify, the opening deposit, fees, and the available ways to move money. If an advertisement highlights one attractive feature, read the complete terms to see what else is required. Comparing the actual account terms prevents a marketing label from standing in for the details that matter to your decision.

Which account pays more?

Neither type automatically pays more. A money market account is not inherently a higher-rate account than a high-yield savings account, and “high-yield” does not promise that a particular savings account will beat every money market account. There is no current, comparable high-yield savings-versus-money-market APY figure established here, so a universal winner or average would be misleading.

Compare the annual percentage yield (APY), which reflects the interest rate and compounding over a 365-day period. The CFPB’s Regulation DD definition makes APY the useful common measure for comparing deposit-account interest. Check both offers on the same date: providers can change rates, and an advertised rate may depend on a promotional period, balance tier, minimum balance, or other condition.

Check what you must do to earn the quoted APY

  • Note the APY shown in the provider’s current disclosure and the date you checked it.
  • Check whether the rate applies to your full balance or only to a balance tier.
  • Look for a minimum balance required to earn the stated APY, and distinguish it from any minimum opening deposit.
  • Check whether the rate is conditional or promotional, and when any promotion ends.

A higher headline APY may not be the better choice if you cannot meet its conditions or if fees offset the interest you earn. Compare the terms that apply to your expected balance and use, rather than ranking the products by name.

How to compare interest after fees

Start with the APY you can actually qualify for, not simply the largest number in an advertisement. Then check whether you can keep the balance needed to earn that APY and avoid any monthly fee. A minimum opening deposit is a one-time threshold for opening the account; it is not necessarily the same as the balance needed later to earn a stated rate or avoid charges. Treat each requirement separately.

Fees matter because they reduce the value of the interest credited to your account. Compare the account’s disclosed charges with the interest you expect to earn on the balance you plan to keep there. For a fair comparison, use the same expected balance and time period for both accounts, and include any fee that would apply under your likely use. A rate that looks stronger on paper may not be the more useful deal if your balance falls below a required tier or your account activity triggers a charge.

APY helps standardize the effect of compounding, but it is not a promise that the same rate will remain in place indefinitely. Rates and promotions can change. If the rate is variable, consider that the provider may change it; check the current disclosure again when making a decision rather than relying on an old comparison.

Can you write checks from a money market account?

Sometimes, but not always. The CFPB says: “Other deposit products, such as money market accounts, may allow you to write checks, but they are not generally suited for day-to-day business, given the restrictions on their use.” A checkbook, debit card, ATM access, electronic transfers, transfer speed, and linked-account requirements are all provider-specific. Confirm each feature in the account agreement before relying on it.

If you want payment access, count the permitted transactions and check any limits on check, debit, or electronic use. A money market account should not be treated as a checking-account substitute merely because it may offer checks. If you mainly need a place to keep emergency or goal savings and are comfortable moving funds electronically, a high-yield savings account may fit. If limited check or payment access matters, a money market account may be worth considering—but only if its actual restrictions work for you.

Check access in practical terms

“Access” can mean different things: paying by check, using a debit card, withdrawing cash at an ATM, or transferring money to another account. Do not assume that one feature implies the others. Confirm which methods are available, whether you must link an external or provider account, and how long a transfer takes under the provider’s stated terms. If you expect to use checks, verify whether they are offered and whether any transaction limits apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also consider how often you genuinely need to make payments from the savings balance. If you need to pay routine bills frequently, the CFPB’s caution about money market accounts is relevant: potential check access does not make one a day-to-day transaction account. If your goal is occasional access while keeping savings separate, limited payment features may be enough. The right answer depends on your needs and the exact restrictions—not just the presence of a checkbook.

Does the federal six-withdrawal rule still apply?

No. The former blanket claim that federal Regulation D limits every savings or money market account to six convenient withdrawals or transfers per month is outdated. In 2020, the Federal Reserve removed the six-transfer cap from the Regulation D definition of a savings deposit. The Board’s April 2020 interim final rule deleted that cap, and the Federal Reserve’s current FAQ says the savings-deposit definition no longer depends on a numerical limit on transfers and withdrawals. That definition can include an account commonly known as a money market deposit account.

This change did not require every bank or credit union to allow unlimited transactions. An institution may still set its own limits, and Regulation DD requires disclosure of applicable transaction limitations. If an account’s terms still specify a monthly cap or charge for certain withdrawals, follow those terms. The point is that the cap is not a universal current federal Regulation D limit.

When comparing two accounts, look for the institution’s own rules rather than relying on a generic statement that all savings accounts are limited to six withdrawals. Limits may be described in the agreement or disclosures, and they can apply differently to different methods of access. Ask the provider if a term is unclear, especially if you expect to make frequent transfers or payments. The federal change concerns the Regulation D definition; it does not erase provider-specific account terms.

Are money market accounts FDIC insured?

Eligible deposits at an FDIC-insured bank are covered by FDIC deposit insurance. The FDIC includes savings accounts and money market deposit accounts (MMDAs) among covered deposit products. Its standard coverage amount, current as of 2026, is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category.

The FDIC aggregates deposits held in the same ownership category at the same insured bank. Opening a second account—or choosing a different account label—at that bank does not by itself create another coverage limit. Check your total deposits by institution and ownership category if you are assessing whether all your funds are within the limit. Deposit insurance applies to eligible deposits, not mutual funds or other non-deposit investments.

The FDIC rules described here apply to insured banks. If you are considering a credit union, verify its applicable NCUA insurance and rules; the FDIC’s coverage explanation does not establish the details of NCUA coverage.

How to think about your total coverage

Do not assess coverage by looking at one account in isolation. Add together eligible deposits you hold at the same insured bank in the same ownership category, then compare that total with the standard limit. The FDIC’s limit is tied to the depositor, institution, and ownership category—not the number of accounts or the product names printed on statements. A savings account and a money market deposit account at the same bank do not automatically receive separate limits just because they are different account types.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First confirm that the institution is an FDIC-insured bank and that the product is an eligible deposit account. If you use a credit union, check the institution’s applicable NCUA insurance rather than assuming the FDIC rules apply. Do not confuse a deposit account with a mutual fund or another non-deposit investment: the FDIC’s deposit insurance does not protect those investments.

How to choose between the two

Start with what the money is for and how often you expect to access it. An account for an emergency fund or a planned goal may be a good fit if it keeps the money accessible enough for your needs while meeting your rate and fee requirements. If you want occasional check or payment access from savings, investigate money market account terms—but do not assume those features are included or unrestricted.

  1. Write down each current APY and the date checked. Compare rates on the same date, not a remembered rate or an undated advertisement.
  2. Read the APY conditions. Record any promotional period, balance tier, minimum balance to earn the rate, or other eligibility condition.
  3. Compare minimums and charges. Separate the opening deposit from the balance needed to avoid a monthly fee or qualify for the stated APY. Include other disclosed account fees.
  4. Match access to your needs. Verify checks, debit cards, ATM access, electronic transfers, transfer timing, linked-account requirements, and the provider’s transaction limits.
  5. Confirm the institution and coverage. Check whether the provider is an FDIC-insured bank or, for a credit union, whether applicable NCUA insurance covers it. Consider your other deposits at the same institution and ownership category.
  6. Choose the account whose actual terms fit. Prefer the combination of APY, costs, access, and service that works for your cash—not the label that sounds more attractive.

Branch availability, customer support, account-management tools, and ease of setting up transfers can also affect convenience. Assess those features for the provider you are considering; they are not guaranteed by either account type.

Which one fits your situation?

A high-yield savings account may be a reasonable fit if your priority is earning a competitive rate on emergency or goal savings and you are comfortable accessing the money electronically. Check whether the rate applies to your intended balance, what fees could apply, and whether the available transfer methods meet your timing needs.

A money market account may be worth comparing if you value the possibility of check or other payment access while keeping the money in a deposit account. That potential feature is only useful if it is actually offered and the account’s transaction rules suit you. Do not assume a money market account is automatically more liquid, earns more, or receives more deposit protection than a high-yield savings account.

Convenience can also be part of the decision. Consider whether you want branch access, what customer support is available, how easy it is to set up transfers, and whether the provider’s account-management tools work for you. These are provider comparisons, not inherent differences between the two account types. A simple side-by-side list of the terms and services you personally need can make the trade-offs clearer.

A final comparison checklist

Before choosing, put the two offers next to each other and answer the same questions for each. What is the current APY, and when did you check it? Does the rate depend on a promotional period, eligibility condition, or balance tier? What is the opening deposit, and what balance is needed to earn the quoted APY or avoid fees? What charges could apply? Which ways can you access the money, and what transaction limits or transfer requirements apply? Finally, is the provider an insured bank or an appropriately insured credit union, and how do your other deposits affect your coverage?

If you cannot answer one of those questions from the provider’s disclosure, contact the institution before opening the account. Keep a note of the terms you compared, particularly the APY date and any time-limited promotion. Because rates, minimums, fees, and transaction limits vary and can change, a prior comparison may no longer describe the account on the day you apply. A provider-neutral comparison based on current terms is more useful than choosing by account name alone.

Which pays more: a high-yield savings account or a money market account?

Neither type automatically pays more. Compare current APYs on the same date and check balance tiers, minimums, promotional periods, and fees. Rates are provider-specific and can change.

Can I write checks from a money market account?

Some money market accounts may allow checks, but not all do. The CFPB says they are generally not suited to day-to-day business because of restrictions on their use. Confirm check, debit, transfer, and withdrawal terms with the provider.

Are money market accounts FDIC insured?

Eligible money market deposit accounts at FDIC-insured banks are included among covered deposit products. The standard amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category, with deposits in the same category at the same bank aggregated. Verify the institution and your complete deposit position.

Are savings and money market accounts still limited to six withdrawals per month?

There is no universal current federal Regulation D six-transfer cap. The Federal Reserve removed that cap from the savings-deposit definition in 2020. A bank or credit union may still impose its own transaction limits, which should be stated in its account terms.

What should I compare before opening either account?

Compare the current APY and its conditions, opening deposit, balance needed to earn the rate or avoid fees, account charges, access methods, transfer requirements, transaction limits, provider convenience, and applicable deposit-insurance status.

The Bottom Line

Neither account type is automatically better. Compare the current APY you can actually earn, minimums and fees, access features, provider-specific transaction limits, and insurance status. Choose the account whose disclosed terms fit your balance and cash-access needs.
