Some of the world’s largest fortunes come from businesses most people rarely think about: roofing-supply distribution, mining, industrial hardware and concentrated stakes in major companies. These six examples show how those fortunes were built or held—and why a billionaire’s estimated net worth is not the same as company revenue or cash in the bank.

The title’s original six-person roster could not be confirmed. The people below are candidates supported by current Forbes profiles and a Forbes Australia list, not a claim about who an earlier article intended to name. Net-worth figures are Forbes estimates, not audited personal balance sheets, and each is a snapshot from a different date.

Six less familiar names—and where their fortunes come from

“Unheard of” is relative: some of these people are prominent in business or national news, even if they are less familiar to consumers than the companies associated with them. Their stories also differ. A founder, an executive chair, an heir and a major shareholder do not have the same relationship to a fortune.

Person Country Business or wealth connection Forbes figure and date available here
Diane Hendricks United States Cofounder and chair of building-supply wholesaler ABC Supply $23.6 billion estimated net worth, September 10, 2026
Gina Rinehart Australia Executive chair of mining company Hancock Prospecting $25.6 billion estimated net worth, September 11, 2026
Reinhold Würth Germany Built on his father’s wholesale screw business; honorary chairman of the Würth Group supervisory board $28.7 billion estimated net worth for Würth and family, September 10, 2026
Stefan Quandt Germany Owns a 23.6% stake in BMW and is its supervisory board deputy chairman $24.6 billion estimated net worth, September 16, 2026
Zhang Yiming China Main cofounder of ByteDance, best known for TikTok Not stated in the Forbes Australia 2026 list cited here
Zhong Shanshan China Founder and chairman of Nongfu Spring Not stated in the Forbes Australia 2026 list cited here

The dated estimates above are not a same-day ranking. Forbes describes the first four as real-time estimates, while the two list entries do not provide a figure in the material cited here. Values can change with markets and valuation assumptions; a company’s sales are not the owner’s wealth.

Diane Hendricks: a fortune in building-supply distribution

Hendricks cofounded ABC Supply in Beloit, Wisconsin, in 1982 with her late husband and is the company’s chair. Forbes describes ABC Supply as a wholesaler of roofing, siding and windows. It reports that the company has more than 900 branch locations and $20.2 billion in revenue in 2025. That revenue belongs to the company’s business activity; it is not Hendricks’s personal income or net worth.

Forbes showed a real-time net-worth estimate of $23.6 billion as of September 10, 2026. The estimate is a dated valuation, not a statement that she holds that amount in cash. Forbes: Diane Hendricks.

Gina Rinehart: mining and a family company

Rinehart is executive chair of Hancock Prospecting, whose roots Forbes traces to her father, Lang Hancock. She took the chair in 1992. The company’s Roy Hill iron-ore project began shipments to Asia in 2015; Forbes also notes a 2024 acquisition in lithium and investments in rare earths, gas and cattle.

Forbes’s real-time estimate of Rinehart’s net worth was $25.6 billion on September 11, 2026. It is a market-sensitive snapshot, not a fixed measure of cash or a direct proxy for the value of any one asset. Forbes: Gina Rinehart.

Reinhold Würth: from screws to an industrial group

Würth joined his father’s wholesale screw business in 1949, aged 14, as its second employee and first apprentice. Forbes identifies him as honorary chairman of the Würth Group supervisory board and describes the group as comprising more than 400 companies and 86,000 employees. The available profile text does not give a dated sales figure, so those scale indicators should not be mistaken for a current-year revenue report.

Forbes displayed a real-time estimate of $28.7 billion for Würth and family on September 10, 2026. The family qualification matters: this is not presented as an estimate for Reinhold Würth alone. In a statement reproduced on his Forbes profile, Würth describes his aim as keeping the company “youthful, in a state of becoming.” The profile does not give a separate interview date for that quotation. Forbes: Reinhold Würth.

Stefan Quandt: wealth concentrated in a global automaker

BMW is a consumer-facing global brand; the less visible part of the story is the ownership structure. Forbes reports that Quandt owns 23.6% of BMW and serves as deputy chairman of its supervisory board. His sister, Susanne Klatten, owns 19.1% and also sits on the board. The profile makes Quandt a useful contrast with founders whose fortunes grew from private operating businesses: his wealth is closely associated with a major shareholding.

Forbes’s real-time net-worth estimate for Quandt was $24.6 billion on September 16, 2026. It should be read as an estimate tied to that date, not as an audited account of his finances. Forbes: Stefan Quandt.

Zhang Yiming: ByteDance and TikTok

Forbes Australia’s 2026 billionaire list identifies Zhang as ByteDance’s main cofounder and says the company is best known for TikTok. That establishes a connection between Zhang and a widely recognized technology company, but the list entry cited here does not provide enough individual-profile detail to support a current net-worth estimate or a fuller account of his career. Forbes Australia: 2026 billionaire list.

Zhong Shanshan: Nongfu Spring

The same Forbes Australia list identifies Zhong as founder and chairman of Nongfu Spring, a bottled-water company listed in Hong Kong in 2020. The material cited here establishes those roles and the listing year, but not enough background to responsibly add a detailed biography or a dated personal-wealth figure. Forbes Australia: 2026 billionaire list.

Quick Recap

How to read billionaire net-worth estimates

  • Check the date. A real-time estimate can move as share prices, exchange rates and other asset values change. Figures from different dates should not be treated as a synchronized leaderboard.
  • Distinguish wealth from revenue. ABC Supply’s reported 2025 revenue is a company sales measure, not an estimate of Hendricks’s personal fortune.
  • Notice whose wealth is being estimated. The Würth figure is stated for Würth and family, whereas the Quandt and Rinehart figures are presented for those individuals.
  • Separate roles from ownership. A company chair may oversee a business without owning all of it; a shareholder’s stake is different from a founder’s role or an executive title.
  • Treat list entries as limited evidence. A ranking entry can identify a person and business without supplying the details needed for a full biography or a comparable estimate.
