The company said in February 2025 that its announced reduction was complete; the available company reports do not show current inventory, prices, or the condition of any individual car.
What Hertz announced—and when the sales ended
On January 11, 2024, Hertz said it would sell approximately 20,000 electric vehicles from its U.S. fleet, describing that group as about one-third of its global EV fleet. The dispositions had begun in December 2023 and were expected to continue during 2024. Hertz also said vehicles designated for sale could remain available to rent while the process was underway. Hertz’s January 2024 filing records the announcement.

The figures later reported by Hertz describe different stages or scopes, not necessarily two counts of one identical batch. Its 2024 Form 10-K describes disposal groups identified in December 2023 and an additional group identified in March 2024. Hertz said the sales were substantially complete by December 31, 2024. In its February 2025 results release, the company said the announced 30,000-vehicle reduction was complete. The 2024 Form 10-K states, “As of December 31, 2024, the sale of the EV Disposal Groups was substantially complete.” The February 2025 results release reports completion of the 30,000-vehicle reduction.

Why Hertz said it was selling EVs
Hertz’s management attributed the decision to EV supply exceeding customer demand, elevated damage and collision costs, and declining residual values. Those are the company’s explanations for its fleet decision—not evidence that every former rental EV is in poor condition or that repair costs are high for every electric vehicle. A particular car’s condition and likely costs depend on its history and inspection.
#1 Best Overall
What the reported $223 million means
Hertz reported $223 million in incremental net depreciation expense related to EV sales for the year ended December 31, 2024. The company’s filing breaks that amount into $175 million in write-downs and $48 million in losses on vehicles sold. These are accounting charges in Hertz’s financial results, not a measure of the discount a buyer could get on a car.
Does this mean former Hertz EVs are bargains now?
Not by itself. The company reports establish a historical fleet disposition and sales channels, but they do not establish that former-Hertz EVs remain available, what they cost now, or their mileage, location, battery condition, or accident history. A bargain claim needs current, vehicle-specific listings and evidence about the cars being offered.
Rank #2
Hertz says its U.S. company-operated Hertz Car Sales locations sell vehicles from its rental fleet. Its filing also describes dealer-direct wholesale, third-party direct sales, retail, and auction channels for vehicles not repurchased by manufacturers. These channels explain how fleet vehicles may be sold; they do not prove that any live listing is one of the EVs included in the sell-off.
How to assess a specific used-EV listing

Quick Recap
Best Value
- Total out-the-door price: Include taxes, fees, and any required charges, then compare against similar vehicles currently for sale.
- Vehicle identity and use: Confirm model year, trim, odometer reading, and whether rental or other commercial use is disclosed.
- Battery and charging: Ask for available battery-health information and verify that the car charges properly; do not infer battery condition from the seller’s fleet history alone.
- Accident, title, and service history: Review vehicle records and have the car independently inspected where possible.
- Warranty and location: Check what coverage remains, whether it transfers, and the practical cost of buying or servicing the car where you live.
- Comparable choices: Weigh the price and condition against other used EVs available now, not against Hertz’s historical accounting charges.
