Buy the M5 MacBook Pro now if you need a reliable professional laptop, value its current ports and mini-LED HDR display, or can find it below Apple’s current retail price. Wait if you already own a fast M-series Mac and specifically want the rumored OLED display, touchscreen, or thinner chassis more than you need a computer today.
The reported redesign is potentially significant, but it is not an Apple-confirmed product with a guaranteed launch date, price, or final specification. The current M5 MacBook Pro is a complete, capable machine—not merely a temporary stopgap.

What the rumored redesign may change
Multiple Apple-focused publications have reported that a future MacBook Pro could introduce an OLED display, touchscreen support, and a thinner chassis, possibly alongside cellular connectivity and a new chip generation often described as “M6.” Coverage has pointed to a possible late-2026 launch.

Apple has not announced the launch date, final pricing, display sizes, cellular support, or whether every model would include touch. It is also unknown whether the redesigned models would replace M5 Pro and M5 Max systems or sit alongside them.

That uncertainty matters financially. A first-generation redesign could be better overall, but it could also cost more and change the port selection, cooling, battery capacity, accessory requirements, or repairability. Those are potential trade-offs, not known defects.

The current M5 is already a serious professional laptop
The 14-inch base M5 MacBook Pro has a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, Neural Accelerators, and 153GB/s memory bandwidth. It is suitable for coding, office work, photography, moderate video editing, research, and demanding multitasking.
Its hardware also solves practical problems that a thinner future design may or may not solve:

Apple’s specifications are available on its technical information page. The current machine uses mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR rather than OLED, but that does not make it an ordinary laptop LCD. OLED could provide deeper per-pixel blacks, stronger contrast, and potentially different response characteristics. However, readers who mainly write, code, browse, manage documents, or watch SDR video may see little practical benefit from delaying a necessary purchase.
Battery life and ports may matter more than OLED
Apple rates the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro for up to 24 hours of video streaming and up to 16 hours of wireless web use, using a 72.4-watt-hour battery. These are laboratory figures for specified configurations and test methods—not a promise of 24-hour real-world use. Brightness, browser tabs, external displays, exports, games, and AI workloads can reduce battery life substantially.
The port selection is easier to evaluate because it is already known. Photographers can import from an SD card, presenters can connect HDMI displays, musicians can use wired headphones, and desk users can connect peripherals without immediately buying a dock. A thinner MacBook Pro might preserve these ports, but that has not been confirmed.
Separate the base M5 from M5 Pro and M5 Max
“M5 MacBook Pro” covers different products. Apple introduced the 14-inch base M5 model in October 2025. The 14-inch and 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max models arrived on March 3, 2026. They target different buyers.

| Model | Best suited to | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| 14-inch M5 | General professional work, coding, photography, moderate editing, and premium everyday use | Strong capability with Thunderbolt 4 and more limited memory and graphics options |
| 14-inch or 16-inch M5 Pro | Development, video editing, creative applications, and sustained heavier workloads | More CPU/GPU capacity, higher memory options, and Thunderbolt 5 |
| 14-inch or 16-inch M5 Max | Large 3D scenes, demanding video pipelines, local AI, and intensive GPU work | Much higher performance and cost; unnecessary for ordinary productivity |
Apple describes the M5 Pro and M5 Max in its March 2026 announcement. Apple’s performance comparisons are vendor claims based on specified systems and workloads, so they should not be treated as universal results.
The base M5 is a sensible choice for 4K projects and many creative workflows. Choose M5 Pro or M5 Max when your work regularly involves large multicamera or 8K projects, complex effects, 3D rendering, large software builds, multiple high-resolution external displays, or local machine-learning workloads that exceed the base model’s practical memory and GPU limits.
The price makes the timing question more important
Apple’s current U.S. buying page observed in the research lists the 14-inch M5 from $1,999, the 14-inch M5 Pro from $2,499, the 14-inch M5 Max from $4,099, and the 16-inch range from $2,999. Prices and configurations can change, so check the live checkout page before buying.

Apple’s indexed pages have shown older, conflicting starting prices. That likely reflects stale or configuration-specific pages rather than a price to average with the current listing. Separately, MacRumors has reported a June 2026 MacBook Pro price increase, including a reported $300 increase across models. Treat that claim as outlet reporting unless confirmed by Apple’s live or archived pricing.

At full retail, the M5 is not automatically a bargain. The buy-now case is strongest when you can use a discount, education pricing, trade-in credit, or Apple-certified refurbished inventory. Apple’s refurbished Mac page changes as configurations sell out, so availability must be checked at the time of purchase.
Who should buy the M5 now?
- Your current Mac is failing, unsupported, too slow, or incompatible with required software.
- You need a laptop for paid work, school, travel, or a project before the rumored redesign appears.
- You want a proven chassis with HDMI, SDXC, MagSafe, and a headphone jack.
- You do not specifically want touchscreen input.
- You are satisfied with a high-quality mini-LED HDR display.
- You can buy below Apple’s current retail price.
- You are replacing an Intel Mac and need the immediate improvement in speed, battery life, and software compatibility.
The redesign will not make an M5 suddenly unusable. The more realistic financial risk is lower resale value or buyer regret—not immediate obsolescence.
Who should wait?
- You already own a fast Apple-silicon MacBook Pro.
- Your current machine comfortably handles your work.
- OLED black levels and contrast are central to your viewing or creative work.
- You specifically want touchscreen input.
- A thinner or lighter chassis would materially improve your daily routine.
- You can wait several months without losing income or productivity.
- You would immediately regret buying a conventional display if an OLED model is announced.
Waiting is a preference-based decision, not a guarantee that the rumored model will arrive on a particular schedule or at an affordable price.
Choose the configuration, not just the chip
Memory
The base M5 is available with 16GB, 24GB, or 32GB of unified memory. Because unified memory is shared by the CPU, GPU, and applications and cannot be upgraded later:

- 24GB: The best-balanced choice for many professionals using large browser sessions, development tools, Adobe applications, photo libraries, local AI tools, and multitasking.
- 32GB: Worth considering for containers and virtual machines, large creative projects, audio sample libraries, frequent editing, or a planned five-year-plus ownership period.
Storage
Choose 512GB if your workflow is cloud-based and you regularly use external drives. For professional use, 1TB is a safer minimum. Consider 2TB or more for local media libraries, video projects, virtual machines, or large development environments. Apple lists base M5 storage configurations up to 4TB.
Do not pay for internal storage simply because it is faster unless you need the capacity. External Thunderbolt storage can cost less, though it adds a drive and cable.
Consider a MacBook Air instead
Not everyone considering a MacBook Pro needs one. If your work is mostly writing, browsing, meetings, coding, and standard productivity software, a MacBook Air may be the more economical choice.

The bottom line on buying now
The M5 MacBook Pro is worth buying now when the purchase solves an immediate problem. It offers a mature design, excellent HDR display, long stated battery life, useful built-in ports, and enough performance for many professional workloads.
Wait only when the rumored redesign is itself the feature you want—particularly OLED, touch input, or a thinner chassis—and your current Mac remains fully capable. For everyone else, buy the configuration that fits the workload, seek a discount or refurbished unit, and avoid paying for M5 Pro or M5 Max performance you will not use.
