Apple’s published maximums increased during 2026. Reporting on May 27 put the previous maximums at $250 for iPad mini, $220 for iPad, $445 for iPad Air, and $670 for iPad Pro. That change illustrates why old trade-in tables quickly become unreliable.

Which iPad mini launch does this refer to?
The latest iPad mini launch identified in Apple’s official materials is the iPad mini with A17 Pro. Apple announced it on October 15, 2024, and made it available on October 23, 2024. U.S. launch pricing started at $499 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model and $649 for Wi-Fi + Cellular, with 256GB and 512GB configurations also available.
There is no verified evidence in the supplied sources of a separate newer iPad mini launch by August 16, 2026. The A17 Pro model gave owners of older minis a direct upgrade path and doubled the base storage from the prior generation’s 64GB to 128GB. Its arrival did not automatically increase every older iPad’s trade-in value, however. Retailers set offers according to demand, inventory, age, condition, and their own resale economics.

What your exact iPad may be worth
The most relevant upgrade cases include:
- iPad mini 6 owners moving to the A17 Pro mini.
- iPad mini 5 owners upgrading to a newer design and processor.
- Standard iPad owners who want a smaller, lighter tablet.
- iPad Air owners trading screen size for portability.
- 11-inch iPad Pro owners seeking a significantly smaller device.
- Cellular iPad owners, whose offers may differ from Wi-Fi versions.
- 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB owners, whose storage capacities can produce different quotes.
Do not assume that a 256GB iPad mini, cellular model, or excellent-condition iPad will receive the family maximum. Run the same configuration through each estimator on the same day.

When Apple is likely the better choice
Start with Apple if you are buying the new iPad mini directly from Apple, want Apple credit, prefer an Apple Store handoff, or value a simple process more than extracting every possible dollar.
When Best Buy may win
Best Buy deserves a comparison if you plan to buy there or a trade-in promotion is active. Its FAQ says offers can reflect device age, condition, required accessories, and current resale prices. That makes Best Buy a potentially better option for some configurations, but not a universally better one.

When Walmart is worth checking
Walmart’s dedicated estimator is another low-friction quote to compare, particularly if you already shop there or prefer Walmart credit. The available information does not provide a reliable static iPad price table, so do not rely on an old published figure.

Compare net value—not just the headline number
A $265 Apple Gift Card is not the same as $265 in cash if you would not otherwise buy from Apple. Compare:
- Nominal value: the displayed dollar amount.
- Usable value: how much of that credit you will actually use.
- Opportunity cost: whether the credit is restricted to a retailer or expires under program terms.
- Effort-adjusted value: the time and risk involved in obtaining the money.
- Net upgrade cost: the new iPad mini’s price minus the credit you can realistically use.
For a fair comparison, use identical inputs: generation, storage, connectivity, cosmetic condition, functional condition, and date.

Trade-in or private sale?
Choose a trade-in when speed, convenience, and predictable fulfillment matter most. Choose a private sale when the iPad is newer, high-capacity, cellular, unlocked, and in excellent condition—and the likely additional proceeds justify listing, messaging, negotiation, payment handling, shipping, and dispute risk.
A private sale may produce more money, but there is no universal premium that can be stated without current marketplace data. For a low-value or damaged tablet, the extra work may not be worthwhile. Recycling can be the sensible choice if the device has little resale value or cannot be securely transferred.

- Cracked glass, a bent housing, dead pixels, or touch problems.
- Camera, speaker, microphone, button, charging-port, or battery faults.
- Liquid damage.
- An incorrect model, storage, or cellular selection.
- Activation Lock or a passcode still enabled.
- A device that is financed, organization-owned, or still managed by a school or employer.
- Damage during shipping or failure to meet the program’s delivery window.
Apple says the inspected condition must match the submitted description and that an online estimate can differ from an in-store value. Apple also generally requires online trade-in devices to arrive within 14 days of receiving the new device. Check the current terms before submitting.
How to get the highest legitimate offer
- Identify the exact model, generation, storage, and connectivity.
- Check Apple, Best Buy, and Walmart on the same day.
- Look for a temporary retailer bonus, and separate it from the ordinary trade-in value.
- Describe damage accurately. A cracked screen should not be reported as good or excellent condition.
- Compare the credit’s practical value with a private-sale cash estimate.
- Do not pay for repairs unless the expected increase in value clearly exceeds the repair cost and risk.
- Keep accessories unless a program explicitly provides a documented benefit for including them. Apple says accessories are not required to receive its full trade-in value.
Prepare the iPad before handing it over
- Back up the iPad to iCloud or a computer.
- Sign out of your Apple Account and iCloud.
- Turn off Find My.
- Remove any cellular plan or eSIM and take out a physical SIM card.
- Erase all content and settings.
- Confirm that the device no longer appears in your account and is not activation-locked.
- Photograph the iPad, serial number, and condition before shipping.
- Follow the retailer’s packaging and shipping instructions.
- Keep the receipt and tracking number until inspection is complete.
Never send a passcode-locked or activation-locked iPad. A financed device or one controlled by an institution may also require resolution before it can be transferred.
When keeping the iPad is better
Do not trade in automatically if the offer is low and the device remains useful as an e-reader, media player, smart-home controller, child device, second display, or backup tablet. Keeping it can be financially better than accepting a small credit toward a new purchase.
