Henry Ford’s exact net worth at death is not established. A 1947 report on his probate said no valuation was placed on the estate; contemporary guesses ranged from $200 million to $700 million. That range is not an official appraisal, and later figures for Ford stock or estate distributions measure only specific assets or transfers—not his full personal wealth.
What was Henry Ford’s net worth?
There is no verified single total for Ford’s estate. In its April 28, 1947 report on the probate filing, TIME reported that “No valuation was put on the estate” and that estimates at the time ranged from $200 million to $700 million. Those were contemporary guesses, not a probate valuation. The wide range is the most honest answer to the question, rather than a precise number presented as fact.

Ford died at age 83 on April 7, 1947, at Fair Lane in Dearborn, according to Ford Motor Company’s biography.
What do the reported Ford shares tell us?
TIME reported that Ford’s 55% holding in Ford Motor Company included 94,955 voting shares left to family members and 1,804,140 nonvoting shares left to the Ford Foundation. The share count helps explain the estate’s scale and how the company stake was divided, but it does not supply a complete balance sheet or a reliable total value for all of Ford’s assets and liabilities.

Why later Ford Foundation figures are not his net worth
The Foundation’s records document particular transfers and stock valuations. They are useful evidence about parts of the bequests, but they use different measures and dates from the 1947 estimates of the whole estate.
| Figure | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| $2,576,645 | The final distribution from Henry Ford’s estate recorded in the Ford Foundation’s 1954 annual report. Ford Foundation, 1954 annual report. | It is one recorded distribution, not the estate’s total value. |
| 3,089,908 shares at $135 per share | The Foundation’s 1955 annual report lists its nonvoting Ford Motor Company Class A shares and says $135 was the estate-tax value for the last block received. Ford Foundation, 1955 annual report. | The valuation concerns a particular block; it does not establish the value of every share or Ford’s complete net worth. |
| $417 million | A private valuation of Ford stock received through the Ford bequests, cited in a 2024 University of California dissertation excerpt. Dissertation excerpt. | The dissertation notes that the shares had no established market value and describes $417 million as an estimate; it is not a verified total for Ford’s estate. |
The Ford Foundation itself grew through bequests from both Edsel and Henry Ford, and its history describes those gifts as making it the world’s largest philanthropy. Its later assets include more than the value of Henry Ford’s estate, so the Foundation’s total assets should not be treated as his personal fortune. Ford Foundation history
Can Henry Ford’s net worth be converted to today’s dollars?
A current-dollar estimate would depend on which 1947 figure is chosen and which conversion method is used. Because the contemporary whole-estate range was explicitly unverified and spans $200 million to $700 million, converting one end—or the midpoint—into modern dollars would imply a precision the evidence does not support. The stock valuations and estate distribution are different kinds of figures, so they cannot serve as a clean substitute for the missing total.

For historical context rather than a net-worth figure, Ford Motor Company identifies My Life and Work (1922) as a book Henry Ford wrote with Samuel Crowther. It is Ford’s account of his work and ideas, not evidence of a complete valuation of his estate. Ford Motor Company biography
