Its Hemi Virtual Machine combines EVM execution with Bitcoin-state awareness; its Proof-of-Proof system publishes Hemi state to Bitcoin; and its Tunnels provide routes for moving assets between networks. Hemi mainnet launched on March 12, 2025. These features do not make Hemi part of Bitcoin or Ethereum’s consensus, and Bitcoin anchoring does not make every Hemi transaction equivalent to a Bitcoin transaction.
What Hemi is—and what it is not
Hemi describes itself as a modular Layer 2 network for Bitcoin and Ethereum. In practice, it combines an EVM-compatible execution environment, Bitcoin-aware contract functionality, mechanisms for publishing Hemi state to Bitcoin and Ethereum, and asset-transfer routes called Tunnels. That makes it a smart-contract and interoperability layer built to use both ecosystems, rather than a change to either base-layer protocol.
Hemi’s thesis is that Bitcoin’s assets and security-related infrastructure can be brought closer to Ethereum’s smart-contract tooling and application ecosystem. The company calls the intended combined environment a “supernetwork.” That is Hemi’s framing, not a shared designation adopted by Bitcoin or Ethereum.
The network was announced in July 2024, initially alongside an incentivized testnet. Hemi announced mainnet on March 12, 2025. The mainnet announcement and launch post therefore supersede launch-era expectations that mainnet was still planned.

How Hemi’s architecture fits together
The names describe different parts of the system: hVM is the execution environment, hBK is the Bitcoin-state developer toolkit, PoP is the Bitcoin publication and security mechanism, and Tunnels are asset-transfer routes. Hemi also describes Ethereum publication and other roles in its whitepaper. The diagram is a simplified conceptual view, not a complete protocol specification.
Bitcoin — PoP publications and Bitcoin state │ Hemi — hVM execution, hBK access, Tunnels, applications │ Ethereum — EVM-compatible tools, ETH gas, publication-related functions
“Powered by Bitcoin and Ethereum” means Hemi uses infrastructure and mechanisms associated with those networks. It does not mean Bitcoin or Ethereum core developers govern Hemi, or that Hemi transactions execute on either base layer.
The Hemi Virtual Machine (hVM)
Hemi describes the hVM as an EVM with a full Bitcoin node integrated into the execution environment. The practical aim is to let developers use Solidity and familiar EVM tooling while contracts can access Bitcoin-related state through Hemi-specific interfaces. Bitcoin remains a separate protocol; an EVM contract does not turn Bitcoin into a smart-contract chain.
The Hemi Bitcoin Kit (hBK)
Ordinary EVM contracts cannot directly inspect Bitcoin’s UTXO state. Hemi’s hBK is intended to expose Bitcoin information to applications, enabling developers to build logic that responds to Bitcoin transactions, UTXOs, confirmations, or related state. Possible uses include BTC-backed lending, collateral, cross-chain settlement, restaking designs, and Bitcoin-aware transaction strategies. These are application possibilities, not a guarantee that any particular product is live, safe, or liquid.

hBK is a Hemi toolkit and interface; it does not alter Bitcoin’s consensus rules. Hemi’s developer tutorials cover user and developer workflows, but the launch announcement alone is not enough to treat this as a production implementation guide. Check current documentation and interfaces before deploying.

Proof-of-Proof, Bitcoin anchoring, and finality
Hemi calls its Bitcoin publication mechanism Proof-of-Proof (PoP). In simplified terms, Hemi produces its own blocks and state; PoP participants publish commitments or proofs tied to Hemi state to Bitcoin; and Bitcoin proof of work provides an external anchor. Hemi describes the resulting stronger finality milestone as “superfinality.”
- Hemi executes transactions and produces Hemi state.
- PoP miners publish Hemi-related commitments or proofs to Bitcoin.
- Bitcoin’s proof-of-work chain records those publications, providing an external security anchor.
- As relevant publications accumulate, Hemi describes the state as reaching superfinality.
Timing statements are milestone-specific. Hemi’s July 2024 launch announcement described superfinality as taking “a few hours,” while its March 2025 mainnet launch materials describe 90-minute superfinality. These should not be collapsed into a universal guarantee for every transaction or asset route. Fast local confirmation, Hemi protocol finality, Bitcoin-anchored finality, and the time a bridge or application waits before acting are different things.
Important: “Bitcoin-anchored” is not synonymous with “settled on Bitcoin.” Hemi’s security depends on more than Bitcoin’s proof of work: execution and sequencing, PoP participation and publication, Ethereum-related functions, data availability, challenge mechanisms, and the contracts and applications involved all matter. Hemi’s whitepaper describes these broader roles; users should not read the phrase “inherits Bitcoin security” as meaning every Hemi transaction has identical security properties to a confirmed Bitcoin transaction.

PoP is not merged mining
In merged mining, Bitcoin miners use related proof-of-work effort to mine another chain at the same time. Hemi describes PoP differently: participants publish Hemi state commitments or proofs to Bitcoin, using Bitcoin as an anchor rather than making Hemi simply another chain mined in parallel by Bitcoin miners. The mechanisms, participants, incentives, and assumptions differ; Hemi’s comparison of PoP and merged mining should be read alongside its whitepaper rather than treated as an independent guarantee of security.
Moving assets with Hemi Tunnels
Hemi calls its cross-network asset routes “Tunnels.” They are intended to move supported assets between Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Hemi, where assets can be used by Hemi applications. The route, custody or vault design, representations issued on Hemi, fees, and withdrawal conditions can differ by asset and direction. A wrapped or Hemi-issued representation is not Bitcoin itself, even if it is designed to track BTC or be redeemable against BTC.

Before sending anything, verify the exact asset and route in Hemi’s official interface and official links page. Confirm the source and destination networks, receiving address or contract, quoted fees, expected timing, and withdrawal process. A transaction sent through the wrong route or to an unsupported destination may not be recoverable.
- “Trustless” is a protocol-design claim, not a promise of zero risk. Smart-contract bugs, vault or relayer failures, operational dependencies, liquidity constraints, and incorrect user actions can still cause loss or delays.
- Deposits and withdrawals are not necessarily instant. The route may depend on transactions and confirmations on multiple networks and on the application’s own recognition of finality.
- Check how the destination asset is represented, what backs it, and how redemption works. Do not assume hemiBTC, BTC, WBTC, and third-party BTC derivatives are interchangeable.
- For Bitcoin-side operations, an EVM wallet alone may not be sufficient; Hemi’s tutorials include Bitcoin-wallet workflows such as UniSat.
Using Hemi mainnet
Hemi’s current network documentation lists these configuration details. Its public RPC is rate-limited and intended primarily for development and testing; production applications should use a suitable provider or infrastructure of their own.
| Network | Chain ID | Gas token | RPC | Explorer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hemi Mainnet | 43111 | ETH | https://rpc.hemi.network/rpc | https://explorer.hemi.xyz |
| Hemi Testnet | 743111 | ETH | https://testnet.rpc.hemi.network/rpc | https://testnet.explorer.hemi.xyz |
For an EVM wallet such as MetaMask, Hemi’s setup guide lists the mainnet name as Hemi Mainnet, chain ID 43111, currency symbol ETH, the RPC above, and the Hemi explorer. Verify these settings against Hemi’s official links before adding a network or signing a transaction; in particular, do not confuse mainnet chain ID 43111 with testnet 743111.
Gas is paid in ETH
Hemi’s current gas documentation and network details say ETH is the practical gas token. A Bitcoin holder may need to obtain or tunnel ETH to transact. The whitepaper describes a broader dual-asset design that may handle native-token fee payments through conversion, but that is not a basis for assuming a wallet can currently pay gas in HEMI. Check the live wallet and network documentation before relying on a different fee asset.
Developer infrastructure
Developers can start with Hemi’s EVM-compatible environment and documentation, then assess Bitcoin-state access, supported assets and tunnels, oracle and data-availability dependencies, and the production RPC path. Hemi lists dRPC and Infura’s DIN as provider options in its network documentation; availability, limits, and pricing are provider-specific and may change. A public endpoint is not a substitute for production capacity or an operational plan.

What users can do—and what “staking” means
Hemi’s mainnet guide described integrations and application categories such as decentralized exchanges, swaps, lending and borrowing, perpetuals, synthetic assets, yield products, vaults, and Bitcoin-related restaking or liquid staking. It named projects including Sushi, DODO, Izumi, LayerBank, ZeroLend, VaultCraft, Kelp, pumpBTC, LayerZero, Pell, Pyth, and RedStone. This is a dated integration list, not a guarantee that an application is currently available, liquid, safe, or accessible in a reader’s jurisdiction. Check live availability and terms before connecting a wallet.

It says users may deposit BTC, ETH, or stablecoins for ecosystem or partner incentives, and that these deposits are not used to validate the network. The documentation also says this product has no slashing risk and no bonding period; those statements apply to the described Hemi staking product, not to every third-party restaking, validator, or DeFi service. Reward rates and terms can change, and depositors still face contract, asset, liquidity, and protocol risk.
Keep these activities distinct: PoP miners publish Hemi-related evidence to Bitcoin; the documented user staking product deposits assets into reward contracts; veHEMI is a governance and incentive mechanism; third-party restaking is governed by its own protocols and terms. “Staking” by itself does not tell you which activity or risk model applies.

Hemi’s token materials describe HEMI as a network-coordination token associated with functions such as security, governance, staking, and cross-chain activity. The 2025 tokenomics one-sheet lists a total supply of 5 billion HEMI. Total supply is not the same as circulating supply, and that figure alone does not establish current allocations, unlocks, market value, or future demand. Consult the current tokenomics document and verify token contracts from official sources before interacting.
Hemi’s October 31, 2025 economic-model announcement describes veHEMI as part of its governance and incentives design, with protocol-fee conversion into hemiBTC and HEMI rewards and a portion of HEMI burned. It also reports a historical first-stage distribution of approximately 0.2445 hemiBTC and 100,320.69 HEMI to eligible veHEMI stakers for a specific prior staking window, alongside approximately 98,216.75 HEMI burned. Those are historical figures, not a current yield quote or promise of future distributions.

Hemi’s staking documentation identifies hemiBTC as its native BTC representation. It is an on-chain asset used within Hemi’s ecosystem, not Bitcoin on the Bitcoin base layer. Its backing, route, redemption conditions, and any additional third-party wrapper or protocol risk should be checked for the specific product; do not infer them from the name alone.
What to assess before using or building on Hemi
Hemi may suit a team that specifically wants EVM development patterns alongside Bitcoin-state awareness or BTC-related liquidity. It is less compelling as a generic EVM deployment if the application does not need those features, because every extra network, bridge route, oracle, or protocol dependency adds integration and security work.
| Layer | What can fail or vary | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Hemi execution and sequencing | Execution, sequencing, or protocol failure | How are invalid states handled or challenged? |
| PoP and Bitcoin publication | Publication, participation, or timing failure | What evidence is published, and what milestone counts as final for your use? |
| Ethereum-related functions | Publication, settlement, or data-availability dependency | What is posted to Ethereum, and which dependencies does the application require? |
| Tunnels and asset representations | Contract, vault, relayer, withdrawal, or liquidity failure | Who or what verifies the route, what backs the destination asset, and how does redemption work? |
| Oracles and DeFi applications | Bad or delayed data, exploit, liquidation, or insolvency | Which risks belong to the application rather than Hemi itself? |
| RPC and wallet | Downtime, rate limits, or phishing | Is the endpoint official, and is it suitable for the workload? |
These checks also help distinguish Hemi from alternatives. Ethereum rollups may offer more established EVM infrastructure and application ecosystems, but have different settlement and data-availability assumptions. Bitcoin-adjacent execution systems vary in EVM support, Bitcoin-state access, bridge model, and security assumptions. The useful comparison is the trust path for the specific asset and application—not a blanket ranking of “Bitcoin Layer 2s.”
For any user transaction, check the official domain, supported asset, chain ID, quoted fees, destination contract, and withdrawal procedure. For any application, assess its own contracts, liquidity, oracle dependencies, terms, and jurisdictional availability. Hemi’s official-links page is the safest starting point for current network and app destinations.
