For Philippine DepEd Grade 10 Health, planning for a health career means exploring different kinds of health work, reflecting on your interests and competencies, and preparing a practical plan of action. It is more than memorizing job titles. The curriculum places the topic in the fourth quarter and asks learners to prepare an appropriate plan for pursuing a health career.
What Grade 10 students are expected to learn
The Department of Education (DepEd) frames health career planning as both exploration and action. Its curriculum guide sets understanding health career planning as the content standard and preparing an appropriate plan of action to pursue a health career as the performance standard. The guide’s exact performance wording is: “The learner… prepares an appropriate plan of action in pursuing a health career.” DepEd curriculum guide

The Grade 10 Quarter 4 module collection, published August 22, 2022, covers the components and steps of a health career plan, preparing a personal plan, selecting a pathway, and deciding on an appropriate path. Health career pathways extend beyond doctors and nurses
Health work includes direct care, prevention, education, emergency response, and work that supports healthier communities and environments. The curriculum identifies a range of areas for learners to explore:
- Public health
- Personal health care
- Maternal and child care
- Mental health
- Occupational health and safety
- Community and environmental health
- Nutrition and dietetics
- Health education and promotion
- Dental health
- Nursing
- Allied health
- Emergency medical services
These are broad areas, not a complete list of individual occupations. Within each, students can investigate specific roles and what those workers contribute to health.

A practical lesson plan for exploring health careers
The following sequence turns the curriculum goals into a classroom activity. It is a suggested instructional approach, not a prescribed DepEd lesson format.
1. Start with what students already know
Ask students to name health-related jobs and describe what they think each worker does. Encourage examples beyond the most familiar clinical roles. This reveals assumptions and gives the class a starting point for exploring the range of health work.

2. Map the pathways
Introduce the curriculum areas, then ask learners to sort them by the kind of contribution they make: preventing illness, providing care, educating people, responding to emergencies, or improving community and environmental conditions. Some roles may fit more than one category.
3. Investigate one or more roles
Students can research a role or, where practical, interview someone who works in health. The investigation can cover daily duties, useful attributes and academic skills, education or credentials to look into, and how the work contributes to health. A sample Grade 10 lesson from Health Smart Virginia suggests internet access and contacts in health careers as possible resources; it is an example from a U.S. educational context, not a DepEd requirement. - Guide students toward a healthy lifestyle, both physically and financially
- This revised and expanded edition adds much more information on work ethic, nutrition, and exercise; updates the sections on sexually transmitted diseases and drugs; and includes completely new sections on preparing financially for the future
- Graphic organizers, self inventories, puzzles, real-life situations, and cloze activities provide creative opportunities for students to assess their own lifestyles and make good choices for the future
- Prepare students for adulthood
- Practical lessons to help handle real life events
4. Reflect on fit
Have learners connect what they learned about each role with their own interests and competencies. DepEd explicitly identifies competence and interest as a basis for selecting a pathway. Students do not need to treat an early choice as a permanent commitment; the purpose is to make a reasoned selection based on the information currently available.
5. Turn exploration into a plan
Ask each learner to state a direction they want to explore, what they still need to learn or prepare, and practical next steps. A useful plan might identify a person to ask, information to verify, or a school activity to pursue. These are suggested fields for making the plan actionable, not a quoted official template.

How to compare possible pathways
Comparing options side by side helps students explain why one path currently seems a better fit. Use the questions below for each role being considered.
| Comparison point | Question to investigate |
|---|---|
| Interest and competence | Which parts of the work interest me, and what abilities or competencies do I already bring? |
| Duties and contribution | What does the worker do, and how does that work support health? |
| Preparation to investigate | What academic skills, education, or credentials should I learn more about? |
| Next steps | What information, conversation, or preparation would help me explore this path further? |
Interest and competence align directly with the DepEd pathway-selection competency. Questions about duties, skills, and credentials are useful investigation prompts drawn from the Health Smart Virginia sample lesson; students should verify education and credential details in the relevant local context.
What to include in a personal health career plan
Because the cited curriculum does not set a single required format, follow your teacher’s current instructions first. As a starting point, a clear plan can include:
- The health career area or role you have chosen to explore.
- What you learned about its duties and contribution to health.
- How the option relates to your interests and competencies.
- What important information or preparation you still need.
- Specific next steps you can take, such as researching further or speaking with an informed person.
A plan is stronger when its next steps follow from the learner’s exploration and reflection, rather than being an unsupported job choice.
