What can be documented is a short run of dated statements from 2023 and 2024 about whether the club is for sale, who owns the County Ground, and supporter calls for Morfuni to sell. This article separates those verified points from the unattributed claim.
Who said “He needs to sell up”?
No named speaker, publication or primary statement has been found for this exact wording. Treat it as an unattributed phrase, not a verified quote. Readers who see it repeated should ask for the original article, broadcast, match-day interview, supporters’ statement or meeting record that contains it, with an outlet and date attached. Until that is found, it should not be reported as Morfuni’s words or as the owner’s position.
Earlier calls for a sale are a separate matter, and they are documented. Those calls are covered below. Their existence does not confirm that this particular phrase was used, or that it relates to any ground development.
What the owner has said about a sale
November 2023: “not up for sale”
BBC Sport reported on 5 November 2023 that Morfuni denied the club was for sale. He said expressions of interest from potential buyers sometimes arrived, and he set out his position in these words: “As I’ve emphasised before and will reiterate now: Swindon Town is not up for sale.” The same report recorded his statement that he had injected £250,000 in the preceding fortnight to stabilise the club. That figure is owner-reported, covers a two-week window in late 2023, and has not been independently verified. It should not be read as the club’s current finances.

June 2024: “100% committed”
ITV News West Country reported on 13 June 2024 that some supporters had urged Morfuni to sell. In the same report he said he remained “100% committed” to the club. This is the clearest owner position in the reporting available here, but it is also more than a year old at the time of writing, in October 2026. It does not establish his position now.
Who owns the County Ground?
ITV reported in June 2024 that the County Ground was owned jointly by Swindon Town and the Swindon Town Supporters Trust. A secondary report reproducing Morfuni’s account says the club and the trust bought the ground together. The two accounts agree on joint ownership as of mid-2024. Neither shows whether that arrangement has changed since.

What is and is not known about the redevelopment plans
The only reference to development found in the available reporting is the Fan Banter account’s statement that architects had been appointed for development of the Don Rogers Stand. That is a secondary report, and it is not confirmed by a club or planning source in the material reviewed. The following points remain unestablished:
- Whether the Don Rogers Stand work is the redevelopment the headline refers to
- The scope of any proposal, including capacity, layout and cost
- Whether a planning application has been submitted, and its status with the local planning authority
- How any work would be funded, and whether it would change who owns the ground
- Whether the ground’s use for football would be affected
Because none of these is established, any article or post that describes the plans in more detail should be checked against the club’s own announcements or the public planning register for Swindon.

Supporter calls for a sale
Calls for Morfuni to sell are documented more than once. The Swindon Town Supporters Trust called for him to sell up earlier in the month that a BBC Sport report covered, which was about the appointment of manager Mark Kennedy. The date of that call is not stated in the available report. The June 2024 ITV report also records supporters urging a sale. These calls are real, but they show only that supporters have wanted a change of ownership. They do not show what the owner was asked to do about the County Ground.
How to check a claim like this yourself
If you are deciding whether to act on a story about a club’s ownership, buy into a supporters’ scheme, or hold money connected to a club venture, the following checks are more useful than repeating the headline:

- Find the original words. Note the outlet, the date and whether the speaker is named. A quotation with no source should be treated as unverified.
- Check the club’s official website and social channels for a statement on ownership or the ground.
- Check the Swindon Town Supporters Trust’s own published statements, since it co-owns the County Ground according to the 2024 reporting.
- Search the local council’s public planning register for any application linked to the ground. A planning application is the most reliable sign that a development has a formal status.
- If you need to know who controls the football club company, search the company’s filings at Companies House, the UK company registry, rather than relying on press reports.
Open questions
- Who made the “He needs to sell up” claim, and where was it published or spoken?
- Which County Ground redevelopment proposal, if any, is being discussed, and what is its planning and funding status?
- Has the County Ground ownership changed since June 2024?
- Has Morfuni’s position on a sale changed since his 2023 and 2024 statements?
The Bottom Line
The phrase “He needs to sell up” has no verified speaker, date or primary source, so it should be reported as unattributed. The documented material is limited to dated owner statements from November 2023 and June 2024, joint club and supporters’ trust ownership of the County Ground as reported in June 2024, and earlier supporter calls for a sale. Nothing in the available reporting confirms a current sale process or the scope of any redevelopment.
