Paramount completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026, bringing HBO Max and Paramount+ under the same corporate owner. The company says the services will unify into one product over time, but they had not merged immediately after the deal closed, and no launch date, price, or account-migration details have been announced.
What changed—and why Netflix is part of the story
Paramount completed its takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026. The combined company, described as Skydance, now owns Warner Bros. titles and HBO Max alongside Paramount+, CBS, and Paramount properties. The Associated Press reported the closing on October 7, 2026 (AP report on the acquisition closing).
Netflix had pursued Warner Bros. Discovery, but that proposal did not close. On February 26, 2026, Netflix said it would not raise its offer after Warner Bros. Discovery’s board determined that Paramount Skydance’s proposal was superior. Netflix’s co-CEOs described their negotiated deal as a “nice to have” at the right price, not something they would pursue at any price (Netflix’s statement).
So the likely change for HBO Max subscribers stems from shared ownership with Paramount+, not a Netflix acquisition. Netflix subscribers have no announced plan change tied to this deal.

Will HBO Max and Paramount+ become one app?
The company says HBO Max and Paramount+ will “unify into a single service over time.” That describes a future plan, not a completed merger. AP reported that the apps would look the same immediately after the acquisition closed, with no timetable for unification disclosed (AP report on the planned service unification).
Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison said, “Our viewpoint is, HBO should stay HBO” (AP report). That is an expression of intent about the HBO brand; it does not confirm that HBO Max will remain a separate app or subscription. The acquired portfolio also includes Discovery+, but the reported announcement specifically described unifying HBO Max and Paramount+. It does not establish that Discovery+ will join that same service.

What HBO Max and Paramount+ subscribers know—and what remains unknown
For subscribers, corporate ownership and a product merger are different things. The immediate post-closing report points to continuity in how the apps look, while the company has announced a longer-term direction for the services. The cited reporting does not establish:
- the combined service’s name or launch date;
- its subscription price, advertising options, or plan lineup;
- which titles, sports, or news offerings each plan would include; or
- whether subscribers would need to migrate accounts, billing, profiles, or watchlists.
Until those terms are announced, subscribers should not assume that they need to cancel, switch plans, or take any account action because of the acquisition.

Will my HBO Max price go up?
No price change is established in the cited reporting. Syracuse University professor J. Christopher Hamilton told AP that he did not expect consumers to notice an organizational difference in the near term through higher fees or new programming in the first quarter. That is his short-term assessment, not a company guarantee or evidence that later prices will remain unchanged (AP report, October 7, 2026).
There is not enough announced information to compare the future service’s value with either current subscription. When terms arrive, the practical comparison will be the monthly price, ads versus ad-free options, included programming, streaming and download limits, availability by country, and what happens to existing accounts.

How large are the combined services in the U.S. streaming market?
JustWatch figures reported by AP put Paramount+ and HBO Max together at roughly 14% of the U.S. streaming market, compared with 17% for Amazon Prime and 19% for Netflix. AP did not specify the measurement period in the quoted passage (AP report citing JustWatch, 2026).
Those percentages describe reported market share; they are not subscriber counts, household penetration, viewing hours, or a forecast. The figures show the potential scale of the two services together, but they do not tell subscribers whether a future combined plan will cost less or offer more than their current options.
