Redwood Holdings completed its takeover of Reading FC on 14 May 2025, acquiring 100% of the club’s shareholding. A report published in August 2026 concerned former bidder Paul Taylor and forged bond documentation used in a 2024 bid; it does not show that the completed sale has been reversed or that a new takeover is in danger.
Reading FC’s takeover is complete
Reading announced a sale in principle to Redwood Holdings on 3 May 2025. The proposed transaction included the Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Ground and was subject to final legal steps. The club’s announcement is available on Reading FC’s website.
The deal completed on 14 May 2025, after EFL clearance. Redwood acquired 100% of the club’s shareholding; Rob Couhig and Todd Trosclair were named as the owners behind the group. The completion was reported by Reading FC.
What the latest reported setback concerns
On 14 August 2026, City A.M. reported that the Financial Conduct Authority fined and banned Paul Taylor, a former bidder for Reading, over forged bond documentation. The report said the documents had been used as proof of funds in a 2024 bid. It relates to a past bid, not evidence that Redwood’s completed 2025 acquisition has failed or is being undone. See City A.M.’s report.

How the 2024 bid differs from the completed deal
| Milestone | Parties and outcome | What was included or established |
|---|---|---|
| September 2024 | Rob Couhig’s proposed takeover did not proceed after the parties were unable to agree, according to The Guardian’s report on 18 September 2024. | The report establishes that negotiations failed; it does not describe a completed sale. |
| May 2025 | Redwood Holdings acquired 100% of Reading FC’s shareholding, with EFL clearance. | The club’s 3 May announcement in principle included the stadium and Bearwood Park; the 14 May completion confirmed the acquisition. |
The distinction matters: Couhig’s unsuccessful 2024 negotiations were followed by a separate transaction completed by Redwood in 2025. The later regulatory report about Taylor does not, by itself, alter that history.
Why older Reading takeover updates can be misleading
Reading’s 7 October 2024 statement said the club had agreed an exclusivity period with a potential purchaser. It also disclosed an EFL registration embargo linked to late filing of the 2022–23 accounts. Those were developments during the earlier sale process, not confirmation of the club’s current ownership or a current embargo. The historical statement is at Reading FC.

There is also a separate 2024 story behind language about a crisis at the club: in June, Reading sought withdrawal of its women’s team from the Championship after a late bid for the women’s arm fell through. Sell Before We Dai, a fan group, called the reported withdrawal and academy closure “an absolute disgrace,” as reported by The Guardian on 28 June 2024. That is a different quote, about the women’s programme, not a verified prediction about the completed takeover. The exact speaker or article behind “It’s an absolute disaster” has not been identified in the available reporting.

- A new club or EFL announcement: the May 2025 completion is the established ownership milestone; a claim that the sale has changed needs evidence of a subsequent development.
- What a regulatory report actually covers: the August 2026 story concerns a former bidder’s conduct and past proof-of-funds documents, not Redwood’s acquisition.
- The date and transaction: older exclusivity, embargo, or failed-bid updates describe earlier stages and should not be read as current takeover news without a newer source.
Reading’s official site continued to publish club and season news on 7 October 2026; that activity alone is not a new ownership announcement. See Reading FC’s official website.
