Has Indonesia Changed the Rupiah? What Australians Travelling to Bali Need to Know

A reported 2027 target is for passing a draft rupiah redenomination law, not a confirmed date for new currency. Here is what Australians travelling to Bali should know about current cash and the 2026 commemorative-note withdrawal.

No general rupiah redenomination for Bali visitors is established by the available official information. Indonesia still lists the rupiah as its currency and describes the notes and coins in circulation. A reported 2027 milestone is a target for passing a draft law—not a confirmed date for new money or a change to what travellers pay.

Has Indonesia changed the rupiah for Bali travellers?

Indonesia Travel identifies the rupiah (IDR; Rp) as Indonesia’s official currency and says transactions are required by law to be conducted in rupiah. Its published guidance lists banknotes from IDR1,000 to IDR100,000 and coins from IDR50 to IDR1,000. Those are the denominations described in the tourism guidance; the reviewed material does not establish a general change to ordinary rupiah prices or denominations.

That distinction matters because “redenomination” means simplifying nominal values without changing real value. A proposal to do that is not the same as a change already in force, and it does not by itself tell travellers how any future conversion would work.

What is the reported 2027 rupiah proposal?

A November 2025 research brief from the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia says redenomination was included in the Ministry of Finance’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan under Minister of Finance Regulation No. 70 of 2025. The brief reports a target of passing a draft law in 2027. That is a legislative target, not evidence that a bill has passed, implementation has begun, or new notes will be issued in 2027. The brief is available from the House of Representatives research service.

The available materials do not set out a traveler transition plan or establish when any redenomination would take effect. They also do not quantify whether it would make travel easier for Australians. Until official implementation details are published, there is no confirmed conversion process or basis for assuming a particular effect on Australian visitors.

Does the 2026 withdrawal affect ordinary tourist cash?

No. Bank Indonesia Regulation No. 4 of 2026 concerns two denominations from a special 2001 issue commemorating the 100th anniversary of Bung Karno: IDR500,000 and IDR25,000. Those specific notes ceased to be legal tender on 6 June 2026, and the regulation allows them to be exchanged at Bank Indonesia or commercial banks through 6 June 2036. This is a withdrawal of a commemorative issue, not a general change to the rupiah used for everyday tourist spending. See Bank Indonesia Regulation No. 4 of 2026.

Bank Indonesia Regulation No. 3 of 2026 addresses characteristics, circulation and exchange rules for rupiah banknotes and coins; its published summary does not announce a traveler-facing redenomination. A separate foreign-exchange rule effective 1 July 2026 sets a threshold and documentation requirements for certain cash purchases of foreign currency against rupiah. That concerns foreign-exchange transactions, not a change to tourist note denominations. See Regulation No. 3 of 2026 and PADG No. 15 of 2026.

How Australians can handle money in Bali now

Indonesia Travel’s general visitor guidance—not a guarantee about every Bali business—says credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, large restaurants and large stores. It says foreign currency can be exchanged at banks and money changers in major cities and tourist resorts, and advises travellers going to more remote areas to exchange beforehand. International Plus/Cirrus or Alto-network ATMs are described as common in major cities and tourist destinations. Read the Indonesia Travel currency guidance.

  • Plan cash access around your itinerary. If your plans include more remote areas, consider arranging rupiah before you leave a major city or tourist resort.
  • Keep smaller notes available. The guidance notes that IDR50,000 and IDR100,000 notes can be harder to split, especially in rural non-tourist areas.
  • Use cards where accepted, but do not assume universal acceptance. The page describes broad acceptance at larger businesses; it does not promise that every merchant, ATM or card will work.

The cited guidance does not compare Australian-dollar exchange rates or provider fees, so it cannot identify the cheapest way to obtain rupiah.
