The available figures do not establish that 50 Cent has sold more albums than Jay-Z. They measure different things: a secondary archive estimates 50 Cent’s worldwide album sales, while the clearest Jay-Z comparison reports U.S. album units certified by the RIAA. The specific statistics behind the claim—and a verifiable statement from 50 Cent making it—could not be confirmed from the available sources.
What do the available numbers show?
The figures offer context, but they cannot be placed side by side as a fair artist-versus-artist sales comparison.

| Artist or measure | Reported figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Jay-Z | 27.5 million | U.S. album units certified by the RIAA, as reported by Guinness World Records. This is not a worldwide raw-sales total. |
| 50 Cent | Over 23.2 million albums | A worldwide estimate from BestSellingAlbums.org, a secondary archive whose page was updated December 6, 2024. Its method is not established as equivalent to the Guinness/RIAA measure. |
| Jay-Z, historical comparison | More than 29 million albums | A U.S. sales figure reported by Billboard in 2009, citing Nielsen SoundScan sales tracked since 1991. It is a historical tracked-sales figure, not a current worldwide tally. |
The apparent numerical gap between 27.5 million and “over 23.2 million” is not proof that Jay-Z leads—or that 50 Cent leads—because the first is a U.S. certified-unit figure and the second a worldwide estimate. The older SoundScan figure is a different measure again.
Why “album sales” can mean different things
A meaningful comparison needs the same rules for both artists. At minimum, the figures should cover the same territory and time period, count the same formats and units, and use the same inclusion rules.

#1 Best Overall
- Geography: U.S. totals cannot be directly compared with worldwide totals.
- Measurement: Estimated sales, tracked sales and RIAA-certified units are not interchangeable. The RIAA explains that its Platinum album award signifies one million copies sold, but certification awards across titles do not by themselves settle a worldwide artist-total comparison. See the RIAA’s Gold & Platinum historical page.
- Period: A figure tied to sales tracked since 1991 or reported in 2009 does not automatically represent an artist’s current career total.
- What counts: Album-only sales can differ from album-equivalent units, and totals may treat collaborations or featured appearances differently. The RIAA notes that its lists may omit collaborations and featured works from artist totals.
What is known about 50 Cent’s biggest-selling album?
BestSellingAlbums.org identifies Get Rich or Die Tryin’ as 50 Cent’s best-selling album and estimates its sales at 11,895,000. That is the archive’s estimate, on the same page updated December 6, 2024—not an independently verified figure that can be added to or compared directly with Jay-Z’s RIAA-certified total.

No original post, interview or article containing the specific statistics was located, and there is no verified direct quotation from 50 Cent about this comparison in the available evidence. The claim’s wording may refer to a particular set of figures, but without that source and its definitions, neither the attribution nor the comparison can be independently checked.
Rank #2
- The Massacre is the second studio album from 50 Cent
What can be said is narrower: Guinness World Records reports Jay-Z at 27.5 million RIAA-certified U.S. album units, while BestSellingAlbums.org estimates 50 Cent’s worldwide album sales at over 23.2 million. Those numbers answer different questions, so they do not show who has sold more on a like-for-like basis.
