What happened to the project?
Futurism reported that the founders discussed possible charitable aims, including math scholarships and education. But the article described enthusiasm falling off soon after the 2014 relaunch: buying had slowed within two months, and enthusiasts were calling the coin dead within three. It also said CryptoSlate listed piCoin as abandoned at that time.

Those statements describe what the 2018 article reported about the project’s earlier trajectory. They do not establish the historical coin’s present network status, maintenance, or market availability.

Its current operational status and market availability have not been established here. A coin with a familiar name or similar π-themed branding is not necessarily the same project. Recent search results included a GitHub project titled PICOIN and a 2026 Bitcointalk announcement for a Proof-of-Pi project, but no evidence establishes a connection between either and the 2013–14 piCoin covered by Futurism.

For someone considering a purchase, that identity gap matters: a matching name is not enough to verify a coin, its history, or whether it is connected to the project described in the 2018 article. Futurism’s standfirst gave a blunt warning: “Don’t actually buy piCoin.”
