Hansen-Mueller Co. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on November 17, 2025, and Iowa’s notice set March 17, 2026, as the deadline for claims against the Iowa Grain Depositors and Sellers Indemnity Fund. The notice does not establish whether late claims were accepted or what the fund has paid. Anyone with an unresolved claim should contact the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) Grain Warehouse Bureau for current, case-specific instructions.
What was the deadline for Iowa grain claims?
IDALS announced on November 21, 2025, that Omaha-based Hansen-Mueller Co. had filed Chapter 11 effective November 17. The company held an Iowa grain dealer license. The agency instructed people with unpaid grain sold to the dealer before the bankruptcy filing to submit a written claim to both Hansen-Mueller and IDALS’s Grain Warehouse Bureau within 120 days. Iowa’s formal notice calculated the deadline as March 17, 2026. (IDALS announcement; formal notice)
The notice identifies Hansen-Mueller’s Iowa grain dealer license as GD-5048 and its Iowa facilities as Council Bluffs and Sioux City. It said failure to file a timely fund claim relieves the fund from liability. The official materials cited here do not say whether IDALS accepted late claims, how many claims were filed, or how much the fund has paid.
What to do if you still have an unresolved claim
- Contact IDALS directly. Ask the Grain Warehouse Bureau whether any current case-specific procedure applies to your claim. The November 2025 release listed its phone number as 515-281-5324; confirm current contact details with IDALS.
- Ask about both the fund and the dealer’s liability. The formal notice states that not making a timely claim against the Iowa fund “does not relieve the grain dealer of its liability to the claimant.” That distinction does not establish what recovery is available in bankruptcy or guarantee payment; seek qualified legal advice for advice about your individual rights.
- Keep your transaction records together. IDALS’s grain dealer claim form requests sale information such as delivery date, document type and number, bushels, and remaining price. It lists scale tickets, settlement sheets, returned checks marked NSF, and other documents as possible attachments. The form requires notarization. Its payment-order choices refer to situations involving a department receivership; do not assume those choices apply to this bankruptcy without confirming with the Bureau.
Who may qualify for Iowa’s grain indemnity fund?
The Iowa Grain Depositors and Sellers Indemnity Fund is administered by IDALS. In general, the program covers eligible grain depositors at IDALS-licensed warehouses and qualifying sellers who sold grain to IDALS-licensed dealers. Iowa law provides a 120-day claim period from an “incurrence date”; in this case, the agency’s notice used the November 17, 2025 bankruptcy filing and specified March 17, 2026 as the deadline. - Direct readout for 40 different grain scales
- Test high moisture grain up to 40%
- Illuminated multilingual display - English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish
- Includes Protective carrying case with shoulder strap
- Single-point or Precision multi-point calibration to match local elevator
Eligibility depends on the claimant, the transaction, and the grain involved. IDALS says grain title must have transferred to a licensed dealer within six months of the incurrence date for a sale claim. Grain contracted for future delivery but not delivered is not covered under the stated guidance. The guidance also excludes another grain dealer from the definition of a seller, excludes a producer selling under a deferred-payment contract, and does not cover grain stored in a USDA-licensed warehouse. Check the IDALS coverage guidance and obtain case-specific advice if your transaction does not fit these descriptions.
How contract terms affect potential coverage
IDALS describes the following general coverage limits. They are program ceilings, not a promise of payment to any Hansen-Mueller claimant; actual eligibility and loss determination matter.

- AGRICULTURAL GRAIN CHECKS: This portable corn moisture tester and grain moisture meter supports on-farm reference checks for farmers, grain handlers, and grain or feed processors
- 25 CROP PROFILES: Select the matching profile for corn, wheat, soybeans, paddy rice, barley, oats, sorghum, and other supported crops before each measurement
- CONSISTENT SAMPLE PREPARATION: Use a representative sample, fill the clean and dry chamber evenly, and tighten the cap securely without overtightening for more consistent readings
- AUTOMATIC TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION: Built-in ATC adjusts the displayed result for sample temperature; for better consistency, let the meter and sample reach similar temperatures before testing
- USER-ADJUSTABLE CORRECTION: When a trusted reference method shows a consistent difference, use the correction setting to adjust the displayed value; the setting remains saved after power-off
| Transaction type | General fund coverage stated by IDALS |
|---|---|
| Eligible ordinary cash sale | Up to 90% of eligible loss, with a maximum of $400,000 per claimant |
| Deferred-pricing contract | 75% indemnification |
| Deferred-payment contract | No indemnification |
These rates and the cap are from IDALS’s fund coverage guidance and its 2025 bankruptcy announcement. The claim form’s references to a receivership do not, on their own, show that a receivership applies to every Hansen-Mueller creditor.
Nebraska’s bond process is separate from Iowa’s fund
Hansen-Mueller’s bankruptcy also prompted a separate Nebraska process. On January 29, 2026, the Nebraska Public Service Commission addressed a Nebraska grain dealer security bond and Nebraska producers or landowners awaiting payment. It asked affected Nebraska parties who believed they were owed money and had not been contacted to submit claims by February 6, 2026. That date has also passed. This Nebraska bond process is not the Iowa indemnity fund, and its requirements and deadline should not be substituted for Iowa’s. (Nebraska Public Service Commission update)

What is known about the fund—and what is not
IDALS’s fund assessment page says more than $19 million in claims have been approved over three decades and that the fund began with a $9 million farmer investment. These figures describe the fund generally, not Hansen-Mueller claims or payments. The page also states that a ¼-cent-per-bushel assessment ran from September 1, 2023, through August 31, 2025; it is a historical assessment period, not a claim award or a current rate.
