Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 59.85 points, or 0.25%, to 24,271.20 on October 12, 2026. The modest gain came in a divided session: banks and insurers advanced, while technology shares, chipmakers and AI stocks weakened. Xiaomi-W fell 5.55%, but the available reporting does not establish why it dropped.

Trading turnover was HK$162.63 billion, RTHK reported. The day’s small headline gain therefore describes the broad index’s close, not a uniform rise across Hong Kong-listed shares: the technology-heavy parts of the market moved in the opposite direction.

Why did the Hang Seng rise while Xiaomi fell?
The index and an individual stock can move in opposite directions because the HSI tracks a basket of constituents, not Xiaomi alone. On this session, RTHK reported that banks and insurance stocks rose while chipmakers and AI stocks fell. The Hang Seng Tech Index lost about 0.7%, even as the broader HSI gained 0.25%.
#1 Best Overall
Xiaomi-W was quoted at HK$24.52, down HK$1.44, or 5.55%, on Yahoo Hong Kong Finance. That decline was conspicuous, but the reviewed reports do not identify a verified company-specific catalyst. It would be inaccurate to attribute the move to a particular news event, or to say Xiaomi alone determined the index’s close.

How precise is the reported closing level?
Market pages captured different readings. For ordinary reporting, 24,271.20 is the close shown on the quote pages. When decimal-level precision matters, include the source and note that HKEX’s captured page was timestamped 14:35 HKT rather than presenting the readings as identical.
What the session does—and does not—say
The useful takeaway is sector divergence: strength among banks and insurers coincided with losses in technology-related shares, leaving the broad HSI slightly higher. RTHK also referred to broader mainland risk concerns, but the reviewed reporting does not establish that they caused Xiaomi’s fall or provide a quantified breakdown of how each sector affected the index.

One day’s index move is a description of that session, not a forecast or a trading recommendation. The HSI was publicly launched on November 24, 1969; Hang Seng Indexes describes it as one of Hong Kong’s earliest stock-market indexes and a widely quoted indicator of market performance. See Hang Seng Indexes’ HSI details.
