Hackers reportedly accessed unencrypted Defense Department personnel records from October 2025 until July 16, 2026, when officials said the vulnerability was discovered and patched. More than 3 million living and deceased people may be affected. Reported exposed information includes Social Security numbers and military job or service details, but the records exposed varied by person.
What happened in the DMDC breach?
The Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), a Department of Defense unit involved in personnel records and identity management, experienced unauthorized access through a vulnerability in a file-sharing system. TechCrunch and Federal News Network reported that access began in October 2025 and continued until mid-July 2026. The reported notification says the flaw was discovered and patched on July 16, 2026, and that the file-sharing system was restored. (TechCrunch; Federal News Network)
The reports say the records were unencrypted. The vulnerability’s technical details, the file-sharing product, the attackers’ identity, and how the access went undetected for months have not been established in the reporting available as of October 3, 2026. No particular vendor or threat group has been tied to the breach.
How many people were affected?
A Pentagon official told Federal News Network that nearly 2.8 million living people and 294,000 deceased people were affected—more than 3 million in total. TechRadar reported figures of 2.76 million living individuals and 294,000 deceased individuals, attributing them to a Department of War official speaking to CNN. These are reported figures, not an independently audited final total. Reports describe the affected population broadly as people connected to the U.S. military or defense workforce, without a definitive breakdown by service status, employer, or relationship. Why do DMDC records matter?
TechCrunch describes DMDC as a DoD records unit that maintains information used to determine benefits and entitlements, including healthcare and retirement. It also reports that DMDC provides identity management linking service members, employees, and contractors to credentials used for Pentagon systems, buildings, and bases. The reports do not say that access to any particular benefit or credential was misused in this incident. (TechCrunch)
What should you do if you may be affected?
Federal News Network reports that IDX will provide affected people with 12 months of credit monitoring. The reports reviewed do not establish the public enrollment link, eligibility details, or deadlines. Check official DMDC or DoD notification instructions for the enrollment route; do not assume that a general IDX sign-up page enrolls you in this specific offer. The monitoring offer is a reported response for affected people, not evidence that anyone needs to buy a paid service.

The reports establish a months-long period of unauthorized access, an affected population exceeding 3 million according to officials, and reported exposure of unencrypted personal information.
