Gwynne Shotwell and her husband, Robert, pledged one SpaceX share for each of more than 2 million children, according to Fortune’s October 9, 2026 report. The pledge illustrates a new route for contributing qualifying stock to Trump Accounts, but the available facts do not establish that it has been transferred, that it creates an income-tax deduction, or that the donors receive a particular tax benefit.
What the Shotwell pledge is—and what its reported value means
Fortune reported that Shotwell, SpaceX’s president and chief operating officer, and her husband pledged one SpaceX share for each of more than 2 million children ages 11–17 in lower-income areas, with extra emphasis on children near the couple’s Central Texas home. The couple are the reported donors; the shares are described as a pledge, not as a completed distribution.
The value depends on the date and source. Fortune reported that President Donald Trump had valued the gift at $325 million, and estimated it at about $330 million on October 9, 2026, using the share price at publication. Those are attributed, share-price-based estimates—not cash proceeds, a final transfer valuation, or an established charitable deduction. SpaceX shares should not be described as publicly listed or freely tradable based on the available reporting. Fortune’s report characterizes the approach as “tax-smart”; that is its framing, not proof of the couple’s tax outcome.
How stock contributions to Trump Accounts work
On July 2, 2026, the U.S. Treasury announced a process for eligible philanthropic contributors to transfer approved, publicly traded stock to Treasury for Trump Accounts. Transfers are subject to donor instructions, applicable law, and Treasury guidance. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the process would make it easier for philanthropists to help children build long-term financial security and create a pathway for large-scale private giving. Those statements describe the government’s process, not the terms or completion of the Shotwell pledge. Treasury’s announcement

Temporary Treasury and IRS regulations effective September 30, 2026, set requirements for qualified-stock contributions, including a minimum holding period. The rules provide for a five-year holding period or an earlier endpoint specified by the regulations. They establish an account-contribution framework; they do not, by themselves, show that any particular stock qualifies or that a particular pledge has been accepted. The temporary regulations
This stock-contribution route is distinct from the usual investment choices within a Trump Account. IRS guidance describes the accounts as a new type of traditional IRA. During the growth period, eligible investments generally include mutual funds or ETFs that track an equity index of primarily U.S. companies, use no leverage, and have annual fees and expenses no higher than 0.1%, according to the IRS’s August 2026 proposed-regulation announcement. Directly contributed qualified stock is governed by its own rules; it is not simply an ordinary fund purchased with account money. IRS proposed-regulation announcement

Does this mean the donors get an income-tax deduction?
Not on the evidence of the stock-contribution rules alone. Treasury and the IRS say the temporary regulations do not change whether a contribution to a 501(c)(3) organization is deductible. A person seeking to make a general funding contribution generally must act through an eligible donor, usually a 501(c)(3), and any deduction remains subject to existing tax rules. The agencies also explain that a trustee might manage an orderly liquidation of contributed stock after the five-year holding period; a qualified charity may instead manage an orderly liquidation before contributing cash. That explanation does not establish which structure the Shotwells used or what tax treatment applies to their pledge. Treasury and IRS temporary regulations
For charitable deductions generally, the IRS says gifts to qualified organizations may qualify under applicable rules, while gifts to individuals are not deductible. Donated property may generally be valued at fair market value, but eligibility, limits, itemization, substantiation, and other requirements can affect the result. The public reporting does not establish the donors’ basis, holding period, ownership proportions, eligible-donor structure, completion of a gift, or deduction amount. It therefore cannot support a calculation of their tax savings from the reported $300 million-plus valuation. IRS guidance on charitable contribution deductions

Keep the gift-tax safe harbor separate
Rev. Proc. 2026-25 describes a gift-tax reporting safe harbor for certain qualifying individual contributions, subject to its conditions and limits. Its examples concern cash contributions. It is not an income-tax deduction rule for donated stock, and it does not establish that this pledge qualifies for the safe harbor. IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-25

The public reporting cited here establishes a pledge, not a completed transfer or allocation among eligible accounts. A separate implementation announcement does not fill that gap: the SEC staff said on September 30 that Treasury would establish Auto Accounts on or about October 1, 2026, for eligible individuals who did not already have an account, and identified BNY as trustee of the Master Trust. That is account-program context, not confirmation that Treasury received or allocated the Shotwell shares. SEC staff statement
