Guochuan Lai is West Bromwich Albion’s former owner, not its current one. His personal net worth has not been reliably established: a £2.8 billion figure circulated in a 2023 report, but it is an unverified historical estimate, not a confirmed or current valuation. Lai’s ownership ended when Shilen Patel completed a takeover on 28 February 2024.
Who owns West Bromwich Albion now?
Shilen Patel completed the takeover of West Bromwich Albion on 28 February 2024. BBC Sport reported that Patel’s company, Bilkul Football WBA, acquired an 87.8% shareholding in the club. BBC Sport’s takeover report covered the change of control.
Companies House records Guochuan Lai as having ceased to be a person with significant control of West Bromwich Albion Football Club Limited on 28 February 2024. Its current register lists West Bromwich Albion Group Limited as the active controller. See the Companies House persons with significant control record.
The 87.8% figure is the shareholding reported for Patel’s company in 2024; it is distinct from the approximately 88% of the club’s parent company that West Bromwich Albion Holdings Limited held when the 2016 takeover was announced.

What is Guochuan Lai’s net worth?
No authoritative current estimate of Lai’s personal net worth is established. A September 2023 report by Game of the People repeated a £2.8 billion estimate, but did not provide a primary wealth disclosure or explain a valuation method. It should be treated as an unverified historical claim, not a confirmed figure or a statement of Lai’s wealth today. Game of the People’s 2023 report is the cited source for the estimate.
Business revenue and ownership stakes should not be confused with personal net worth. West Brom’s 2016 announcement cited revenue for Palm, a company associated with the takeover, but that was company revenue—not Lai’s income, assets, or personal wealth.

What were Lai’s business interests?
West Brom’s takeover announcement of 5 August 2016 described the acquisition vehicle controlled by Lai as receiving his underlying equity, along with Palm and funds introduced by Yunyi Investment. It portrayed Palm as a company that worked with local governments on an eco-town development model, including designing, constructing, and operating eco-towns. The announcement is available in the club’s full statement on the Albion takeover.
The same announcement reported Palm’s annual revenue in 2015 as RMB4.4 billion (£0.5 billion). That historical figure describes Palm’s company revenue as reported by the club in 2016. It is not a measure of Lai’s personal wealth, and it does not establish Palm’s present-day revenue or a complete picture of Lai’s business interests.

Names alone are not enough to establish that a company or executive is connected to the former owner. For example, Future World Holdings Limited’s 2025 annual report identifies its executive director as Lai Long Wai. The report does not establish that he is Guochuan Lai, so references to “Mr. Lai” in that document should not be attributed to West Brom’s former owner. Future World Holdings Limited’s 2025 annual report was published on 29 April 2026.

When the club announced Lai’s takeover in August 2016, he said his immediate priorities were to maintain a stable structure, respect West Brom’s heritage, and preserve its ethos. He also discussed building the club’s presence in China, developing commercial opportunities there, and taking its training system to China to identify and develop young players. These were statements of intention made as the incoming owner in 2016, not current club plans.

The 2016 announcement said Yunyi Guokai (Shanghai) Sports Development Limited, controlled by Lai, had agreed to acquire West Bromwich Albion Holdings Limited, which owned approximately 88% of the club’s parent company. The club said the financial terms were private and confidential; no purchase price should be treated as confirmed on the basis of that announcement.
