Its central idea is to make limited marketing money go further by investing time, energy, imagination, and information instead. That is a framework for allocating resources—not proof that low-cost campaigns reliably outperform paid marketing.
What is guerrilla marketing?
The term refers both to Levinson’s book and to the approach it popularized: finding resourceful ways to reach an audience when a business has a limited promotional budget. Rather than treating money as the only input, the framework emphasizes using time, energy, imagination, and information to plan and carry out marketing.
For a small business, that can mean putting careful thought into how it reaches potential customers and using available resources deliberately. The label alone does not define a particular tactic, guarantee a low total cost, or establish that a campaign will produce results.
What is the approach based on?
Simon & Schuster’s publisher description of Guerrilla Marketing for Nonprofits characterizes the method as “replacing their lack of money with the power of time, energy, imagination, and information.” The emphasis is on resource allocation: when cash is constrained, an organization may lean more heavily on other inputs.

That framing is a guiding principle, not comparative evidence. The available publisher and book records do not establish that guerrilla campaigns are more effective than paid advertising or other marketing approaches, nor do they provide a typical cost or success rate.
How has the idea been applied?
Small businesses
Levinson’s original book is explicitly aimed at small businesses. Google Books lists Guerrilla Marketing, 4th Edition as a HarperCollins publication from 2007, with 384 pages. A separate Google Books record lists a Piatkus edition from 2007 with 368 pages; publisher and pagination vary by edition and market.

Nonprofits
The framework has also been adapted for nonprofit communications. The publisher listing for Guerrilla Marketing for Nonprofits, published by Entrepreneur Press and distributed by Simon & Schuster on July 1, 2010, describes applications such as public awareness, volunteer recruitment, advocacy, and fundraising.
Social media
Guerrilla Social Media Marketing, coauthored by Jay Levinson and Shane Gibson, was published October 1, 2010. Its publisher page describes action plans and social-media tactics informed by guerrilla marketing principles. Because the book dates from 2010, it should be treated as a historical application of the approach, not a current guide to platform features or rules.

What should a business keep in mind?
- Distinguish the principle from a performance claim. Using time and creativity instead of money may suit a constrained budget, but it does not by itself show that a campaign will be effective.
- Account for non-cash resources. A tactic that spends little money can still require substantial planning, staff time, or coordination. The framework shifts the inputs; it does not make the work disappear.
- Check current channel details separately. The social-media book’s 2010 publication date means its platform-specific material may not reflect present-day products or policies.
Where did the term come from?
Jay Conrad Levinson’s Guerrilla Marketing first appeared in 1983. Google Books identifies the fourth edition as a HarperCollins publication from 2007; edition records differ across markets, so publication details such as publisher and page count should be tied to the specific edition cited.
