GTA 6’s Standard Edition is listed for $79.99 on Rockstar’s store, not $100, as checked October 8, 2026. The $80–$100 figure came from Matthew Ball describing what some game makers hoped the blockbuster might cost—not from his own forecast. The idea that a higher price could “save gaming” is a theory about setting a new price precedent, not evidence that raising game prices would fix the industry.
Where did the $100 figure come from?
In his January 2025 State of Video Gaming in 2025 report, analyst Matthew Ball described a hope among some game makers that GTA 6 might launch at $80 to $100. As PC Gamer reported, the proposed effect was to make a higher price feel more acceptable across the market: $50 games could move to $60, $60 games to $70, and so on.
That was a description of some market participants’ hopes, not a consensus among all publishers. GameSpot’s account makes the key distinction: Ball himself forecast a $70 price. The $100 figure should therefore be read as a debated possibility at the time, not as Ball’s prediction or the game’s current listed price.
What does GTA 6 cost now?
Rockstar’s official store lists the Standard Edition at $79.99, checked October 8, 2026. Prices can change, so check the live listing before buying. Rockstar’s support information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and says the physical version is a code in a box, with no disc. Buyers should check platform and account-region compatibility because code redemption depends on platform and region.

The official store information cited here does not establish a $100 Ultimate Edition price. Treat $100 as the price point in the earlier industry debate unless a current official listing verifies an edition at that amount.
Could a more expensive GTA 6 make other games cost more?
The argument rests on price anchoring. If a highly anticipated blockbuster sold well at a higher price, other publishers might see an opportunity to move their own prices up. GTA 6’s scale and franchise recognition could make it a more plausible test of consumer tolerance than a smaller release.

- Fight against Castillo’s regime in the most expansive Far Cry to date, through jungles, beaches, and Esperanza, the capital city of Yara
- Employ an arsenal of resolver weapons, backpacks, and vehicles to take down Castillo’s ruthless regime.
But a price precedent is not the same as an industry-wide recovery plan. The claim does not establish that smaller studios could charge the same prices, that higher prices would cover rising development costs, or that consumers would keep buying enough games to offset the increase. The available reporting documents a hope about market behavior, not proof that this strategy would restore industry growth or benefit players.
What do consumer-demand estimates suggest?
GameSpot reported that MIDiA Research found 60% of surveyed consumers said they would “definitely” or “probably” buy GTA 6 at $70, compared with 35% at $100. That points to a clear tradeoff: more revenue per copy at a higher price may come with fewer people saying they are likely to buy.

MIDiA Research also modeled that a $70 price could equate to nearly 9% of U.S. adults buying the game—about 22.9 million copies and roughly $1.6 billion in revenue. These are estimates reported by GameSpot, not sales results. Stated purchase intent and a model do not reveal actual launch behavior or determine the price that would maximize revenue.
For consumers, the practical question is whether the added cost fits their budget and how much they expect to play. For publishers, a higher sticker price may be weighed against the risk that fewer buyers will purchase at launch. The cited figures help illustrate that tension but do not settle it.

How does Take-Two justify the price?
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has framed pricing around perceived value. In remarks reported by GameSpot, he said: “Our goal is to deliver way more value to consumers than what we charge them.” That is the publisher’s stated approach, not an independent measure of a game’s value or evidence that the price is affordable for every player.

How to read the debate as a buyer
- Use the live price, not the $100 speculation. The cited Rockstar store listing showed $79.99 for the Standard Edition on October 8, 2026.
- Check what you are buying. Rockstar says the physical package is a download code, not a disc; confirm the platform and region before purchase.
- Separate price from value claims. A publisher’s view of value may differ from your budget, expected playtime, or willingness to wait.
- Do not treat industry-wide price increases as guaranteed. The claim is that GTA 6 might create a precedent; the evidence cited does not show that a higher price would repair the wider games business.
