Use the GST Portal’s Search Taxpayer service to check a GSTIN or UIN before paying a supplier, recording an invoice, or reviewing a vendor. Open https://services.gst.gov.in/services/quicklinks/searchtxp, enter the number and captcha, and select Search. The lookup is generally available as a public, pre-login service, although GST Portal labels and URLs can change.
A result confirms what the registration record displays. It does not, by itself, prove that an invoice is genuine, that goods were supplied, that tax was paid, or that input tax credit is available.
What GSTIN verification checks
A GSTIN is the Goods and Services Tax Identification Number assigned to a registered person or entity in India. The official taxpayer search lets you compare a registration record with the supplier details on an invoice, purchase order, registration certificate, or vendor file. GSTN describes the utility as a way to search by GSTIN, UIN, or PAN and help detect incorrect or potentially fraudulent registrations: GSTN Welcome Kit.
Use a GSTIN search when you need to check whether a number exists, whether its displayed status is active, and whether the registered identity and business details are consistent with the transaction.

Official GSTIN search link
The current direct route identified in GSTN material is https://services.gst.gov.in/services/quicklinks/searchtxp. An alternate official route may still redirect to the same service: https://services.gst.gov.in/services/searchtp.
If neither link works, start at https://www.gst.gov.in/ and find Search Taxpayer in the public services or quick-links area. Avoid treating search-engine advertisements or private “GSTIN checker” sites as the government service.
How to verify a GSTIN online
- Open the official taxpayer-search link.
- Choose Search by GSTIN/UIN if the page offers multiple search methods.
- Enter the GSTIN or UIN exactly as supplied. Do not add spaces or punctuation.
- Type the displayed captcha.
- Select Search.
- Compare the result with the invoice, purchase order, vendor master, registration certificate, and payment instructions.
GSTN guidance specifically warns against confusing the letter O with the number 0; verify the number through Home > Search Taxpayer > Search by GSTIN/UIN when entering data in related utilities: GST ITC-04 guidance.
Information the result may display
The exact layout and fields can change. GSTN’s taxpayer-search description lists these categories:

What each GSTIN status means
Active
Active generally means the registration is currently shown as active in the GST system. It does not establish that every invoice is genuine, the supplier filed every return correctly, tax was deposited for your invoice, or input tax credit is automatically available.
Cancelled
Cancelled means the registration is no longer active in the portal’s registration record. For an invoice dispute, consider the cancellation order, effective date, invoice date, and applicable GST rules rather than applying a universal conclusion.
Suspended, inactive, or unexpected results
Preserve the result and seek clarification if the status is Suspended, Inactive, or otherwise unexpected. The legal effect can depend on the effective date and circumstances of the registration. GSTN materials advise checking that a registration is active in invoice-related work.

GSTIN or UIN search
Use this to inspect a particular taxpayer registration or UIN.
PAN search
The Search Taxpayer utility can search by PAN and may return registrations associated with that PAN. A PAN lookup and a GSTIN lookup do not necessarily return identical records or information.

ARN application tracking
An ARN is an Application Reference Number for a pending GST registration or related application. To track it, use Services > Registration > Track Application Status, enter the ARN and captcha, then select Search, as described in the CBIC registration FAQ: CBIC registration FAQ. An ARN search cannot replace verification of an issued GSTIN.
If the GSTIN is rejected or not found
- Recheck every character against the source document, including the state code and the letter O versus number 0.
- Confirm that you selected GSTIN/UIN search rather than another search mode.
- Refresh the captcha and enter the newly displayed code.
- Try a current browser, private window, different network, or a browser without form-interfering extensions.
- Retry later if the portal is under maintenance.
A blank, invalid, or no-record response can reflect a typing error, incomplete number, temporary portal issue, a newly issued or amended registration, or a record not available in that interface. It is not proof of fraud. If the problem persists, record the error, date, and time and use the GSTN self-service portal at https://selfservice.gstsystem.in/.
How to use the result in supplier due diligence
Use a graduated risk review instead of a binary “verified” or “fake” label.
Lower concern
- The GSTIN is found and the legal name matches the contract or invoice.
- The trade name is reasonably explained.
- Status is active and jurisdiction and business activity are plausible.
- The bank-account holder and contact details are separately verified.
Needs clarification
- The legal name differs materially from the supplier’s documents.
- The state, activity, or status change does not fit the transaction.
- The supplier will not provide matching registration documentation.
Higher concern
- Repeated careful searches return no result.
- The displayed legal name belongs to another entity.
- Payment is requested to an unrelated personal or third-party account.
- The GSTIN is cancelled or suspended while current taxable invoices are issued.
- The invoice contains a different GSTIN from the one independently verified.
These are risk indicators, not standalone legal findings. For high-value transactions, match the legal name, address, bank-account name, purchase records, and—where applicable—e-invoice or e-way-bill information. Ask for the registration certificate when identity or tax treatment matters. An authenticated taxpayer can access certificates through Services > User Services > View/Download Certificates; see the GST tutorial: View/Download Certificates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important limits of an online GSTIN check
- A positive result does not prove that the person contacting you controls the registered entity.
- It does not prove the bank account belongs to that entity.
- It does not prove goods or services were supplied or that the GST rate is correct.
- It does not prove the supplier paid tax or that input tax credit is available.
- A current status does not necessarily establish status on an earlier invoice date.
- A screenshot supplied by a vendor is weaker evidence than entering the GSTIN yourself.
- A business may hold multiple registrations for different states or locations; verify the registration relevant to your transaction.
When a historical date is important, retain a dated copy of the search, invoice, correspondence, and any registration or cancellation documentation. Obtain professional advice for disputes involving credit, cancellation, or retrospective status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I verify a GSTIN without logging in?
The GST Portal’s Search Taxpayer service is designed as a public lookup and normally permits GSTIN/UIN searches before login. If the live interface requires a different step, follow the instructions on the official GST domain.
Is GSTIN verification free?
The official one-off Search Taxpayer lookup is a government portal service and does not require buying a private checker. Third-party bulk tools may charge separately.
Can I verify a GSTIN from a mobile phone?
Yes, use the official GST domain in a current mobile browser, enter the GSTIN exactly, complete the captcha, and compare the result with your documents.
How do I know whether a GSTIN was active on an old invoice date?
A current search alone may not settle a historical question. Compare the invoice date with displayed registration or cancellation dates and retain dated official records; seek advice if the issue affects a dispute or credit claim.
Does an active GSTIN prove that input tax credit is available?
No. Credit depends on the transaction, invoice, receipt of supply, reporting, payment and other statutory conditions. GSTIN status is only one check.
