Choose a GST tool by the work it actually covers—not by whether its marketing calls the product “filing” software. Check whether it fits your accounting, invoice volume, GSTINs and returns, reconciliation needs, review process, portal steps and budget. Software may prepare or transfer return data without replacing your review, payment or final authorization on the GST Portal.
Start with the work your business needs the tool to do
Map the process from recording transactions to submitting a return. A tool may cover some or all of these tasks:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Recording sales and purchases, managing invoices and classifying transactions for GST.
- Importing records from accounting software or another system.
- Preparing returns and reconciling your records with GST data.
- Reviewing figures, resolving mismatches and approving a return internally.
- Transferring data to the GST Portal, paying liabilities and completing final authorization.
These are separate capabilities. For example, Zoho’s documented GSTR-3B workflow includes enabling API access on the GST Portal, answering filing questions, transferring data with OTP verification, checking the return and liability, paying or generating a challan, offsetting liability, and filing with EVC or DSC. The business should therefore ask which steps its software handles and which still require a person on the portal. Zoho’s GSTR-3B filing instructions describe that workflow.

The two categories can suit different workflows, but product labels alone do not establish which is better for a particular business.

| Option | What the vendor describes | Useful fit to investigate | What remains unclear from the available product information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoho Books | Accounting and GST features, including invoices, HSN/SAC classification, e-way bills, e-invoicing and return workflows. | A business that wants bookkeeping and GST tasks in one system. | Whether a particular plan covers every feature and return the business needs; check plan details and workflow requirements. |
| ClearGST by ClearTax | Cloud GST software for preparation, filing, reconciliation, data ingestion from ERPs and reporting. | A business that prioritizes GST return workflows and matching data from other systems. | Current small-business pricing and plan fit are not stated in the cited product information; return support should be confirmed for the required cases. |
Zoho’s product description covers GST capabilities within its accounting product, while ClearTax describes ClearGST as focused on GST preparation, filing and reconciliation. The vendors’ descriptions do not establish equivalent return coverage or a like-for-like price comparison. See Zoho Books’ GST features and ClearTax’s ClearGST product information.
Check these selection criteria before committing
Return, GSTIN and business fit
List the returns your business files, the GSTINs and branches involved, and any special requirements your accountant has identified. Ask the vendor to confirm coverage for those exact cases. ClearTax describes broad return support, but the cited information does not independently compare its coverage with Zoho’s or verify every return case for a small business.

- You can now print to blank check stock. Customization of the check layout is "not" possible at this time. Check the Help file for additional details.
- Electronic form filing for W-2, 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC is available through a third party service (there is a nominal fee for this service).
- Tax forms for 2022
- Includes tax tables for 2023
- Support for new 1099-NEC form
Reconciliation and data imports
If you already keep books elsewhere or manage many invoices, find out how the product imports your source data and helps identify mismatches. ClearTax describes ERP data ingestion and reconciliation; these are vendor-described capabilities, not independently measured performance results. Ask for a demonstration using a representative workflow and clarify what data formats and manual corrections are required.

Review, approval and responsibility
Identify who checks the return before it is submitted: the owner, an employee or an accountant. Ask whether the product supports approval controls, what information reviewers can see, and who resolves errors. Zoho describes an approval workflow and portal filing steps; confirm that the configuration suits your own review process rather than assuming approval in software is the same as final authorization.

Portal connection, payment and final authorization
Ask what portal setup is required, how data is transferred, and what credentials or one-time verification the process uses. Clarify which person handles payment and the final EVC or DSC authorization. A product’s use of the word “filing” does not by itself show that these taxpayer actions are automated.
Support, access controls and security information
Before uploading tax and accounting records, request current details on support availability, user roles, access controls, data handling and security documentation. Comparable service terms and independently verified security details are not established by the cited product descriptions, so evaluate these directly with each vendor.

For either product, compare the subscription against the work it replaces and any additional cost for setup, support or connected services. Do not assume a lower advertised tier includes the functionality your workflow requires.
A practical way to make the choice
- Write down your workflow: note where invoices and books live, how many GSTINs and branches you manage, which returns you file, and who reviews them.
- Separate must-haves from conveniences: decide whether you need accounting and invoicing in the same system, imports from existing software, reconciliation, approval controls or particular portal steps.
- Ask each vendor to demonstrate your actual process: include a data import if relevant, a review, an error or mismatch scenario, and the handoff to the GST Portal.
- Verify the people and steps involved: establish who can access tax data, who approves figures, who pays, and who completes final authorization.
- Confirm the total price and terms: check current plan eligibility, billing frequency, included features and support directly with the vendor.
Choose the product that covers your real workflow with the fewest awkward handoffs while preserving a clear human review and authorization process. If bookkeeping is the main need, evaluate accounting-led software such as Zoho Books; if importing and reconciling data from other systems is central, investigate a dedicated GST product such as ClearGST. Neither category is automatically the better fit, and the available product descriptions are not an independent market ranking.
