If a submitted e-way bill has incorrect invoice, consignment or party details, the GST E-Way Bill System FAQ says you cannot edit the entry: cancel the bill and generate a new one with the correct information. The FAQ specifies cancellation within 24 hours of generation. If only the vehicle or other transport details changed, use the Part-B update route instead, subject to the bill’s validity and current portal rules.
How do I correct a wrong e-way bill?
First identify what is wrong. The correction route depends on whether the mistake is in the submitted bill’s underlying details or in its transport information.

Wrong invoice, consignment or party information
The GST E-Way Bill System FAQ states: “If there is a mistake, incorrect or wrong entry in the e-way bill, then it cannot be edited or corrected. Only option is cancellation of eway bill and generate a new one with correct details.” It also says: “The cancellation is required to be done within twenty four hours from the time of generation.” These are the FAQ’s stated instructions; check the current portal and applicable rules, particularly if the 24-hour period has passed. The exact portal screens may change.
Wrong or changed vehicle number
If the vehicle genuinely changed—for example, after a breakdown or trans-shipment—this is a transport-detail issue. The FAQ says the generator or assigned transporter can update vehicle details in Part-B. Make sure the bill shows the vehicle actually carrying the goods. Official API guidance says a Part-B vehicle update is allowed only while the e-way bill is within validity; do not assume an expired bill can be fixed by editing Part-B.

Can I edit an e-way bill after generating it?
For incorrect submitted entries other than transport details, the FAQ says no: cancel the bill and generate another with correct information, within the stated cancellation window. Part-B is the separate route for transport details such as a changed vehicle number. Check the live portal’s current options and instructions before acting because portal behavior and applicable rules can change.
What transport fields should I check?
The required transport field depends on the mode of movement. Official e-way bill API guidance says road movement requires a vehicle number in the prescribed format; movement by rail, air or ship requires a transport document number. Use the field applicable to the movement and check that the entry is complete and accepted by the portal.

What happens if my e-way bill is close to expiry or expires before delivery?
The FAQ says validity starts with the first Part-B transport entry and depends on approximate distance and transport mode. Because official FAQ formulations differ on distance increments, do not rely on a generic kilometre calculation. Check the validity displayed on the live portal and the applicable CGST rules and notifications.
CBIC rules discuss exceptional circumstances and generation of another e-way bill after updating Part-B. That does not establish that every expired bill can be restored with a simple update. For an expired bill or an unusual delay, consult the current rules and portal guidance for the specific circumstances before movement continues.

How should I handle a portal error code?
Record the exact error code and message, then look it up in the current official e-way bill error-code list or use portal help. The list includes validity-lapse and transport-related errors, but a code’s remedy depends on the specific condition. Do not treat a general error list as confirmation that every bill can be edited or extended.

- Compare the e-way bill with the invoice, bill of supply, delivery challan or other applicable transport document.
- Confirm the transport mode and the required vehicle number or transport-document number are entered correctly.
- If the vehicle changed, check that Part-B reflects the vehicle currently carrying the goods and that the update was made while the bill was within validity.
- Check the bill’s validity against the current portal display and applicable rules.
- Keep the required invoice or transport document and the e-way bill number or copy available to the person in charge of the conveyance, consistent with applicable rules.
- If an error remains, note its exact message and code and follow current official portal guidance; do not assume a submitted field can be edited.
