BMW Group’s GS 90018-1 sets general requirements for suppliers’ regular requalification of supplied products and manufacturing processes. The available edition is dated April 2022, but it warns users to verify that their copy is current. GS 90018-2 is its companion for the process and checklist.
What is GS 90018-1?
GS 90018-1 is titled “Requalification of product and process at suppliers — General specifications.” The surfaced GS 90018-1:2022-04 text says it applies to all BMW Group supplied parts from start of production and addresses systematic requalification of product under IATF 16949:2016 clause 8.6.2, as well as requalification of supplied-part processes.
In that edition, requalification means the regular, planned repetition of qualification content. Depending on the part and agreed scope, that can include process-series and initial-sampling content, reliability features and parameters, and product and production-process requalification, including relevant subprocesses. BMW describes the aims as improving reliability, supporting warranty and goodwill targets, and maintaining stable, capable, controlled production processes throughout the supply chain.
How does GS 90018-1 differ from GS 90018-2?

How often do BMW suppliers need to requalify products and processes?
According to the surfaced GS 90018-1:2022-04 text, requalification must take place at least once every 12 months per part family, counted from start of production. The supplier plans the scope and frequency and agrees them with the responsible BMW Quality Management Parts (QMT) associate. A supplier may group parts into families if it presents the criteria for that grouping. More frequent requalification may be needed for relevant target deviations, such as exceeding PPM action limits with end-customer impact.

BMW’s International Purchasing Conditions (IPC), version 2022-12-01, provide related contractual context: clause 9.2 calls for unaccompanied requalification at least every twelve months after completion of the PPA procedure. This is a separate statement with a different reference point from GS 90018-1’s cadence from start of production; suppliers should apply the controlled standard and their applicable contract rather than treating the two formulations as interchangeable. Who is responsible, and what must be documented?
The supplier is responsible for conducting its own requalification and ensuring requalification reaches its suppliers and sub-suppliers. BMW associates or third parties commissioned by BMW may accompany a requalification. The supplier remains responsible for documenting sub-supplier requalification and must give BMW QMT access to those records on request.

The surfaced 2022-04 text requires the result, any additionally required product or process documents, and required measures to be recorded in BMW’s IT system no later than 10 workdays after completion. That deadline is tied to completion of the requalification.
Is GS 90018-1:2022-04 still valid?
The available GS 90018-1 text identifies itself as the 2022-04 edition and says it replaces GS 90018-1:2018-09. It also cautions: “Printouts are not subject to the change service. The user of this document is under obligation to verify its current validity.” The available information does not establish whether BMW has issued a later GS 90018-1 edition or confirm the document’s controlled status in 2026.

Before applying detailed requirements, verify the current controlled copy through the BMW source available to your organization and check the applicable contract. The surfaced 2025-06 revision of GS 90018-2 is not evidence that GS 90018-1 was also revised.
