For the 2025 holiday season, Christmas Day fell on Thursday, Dec. 25, 2025, and New Year’s Day fell on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026. Most major U.S. grocery chains were closed on Christmas Day; more were open on New Year’s Day, often with modified or location-specific hours. These dates have passed, so the schedules below are a historical guide—not upcoming holiday hours.
What grocery stores were open on Christmas Day 2025?
Most major grocery chains closed on Christmas Day. Some Albertsons and Safeway locations were exceptions, but hours varied by branch. A national chain policy or holiday roundup cannot confirm whether a particular store was open near you.
Reported Christmas Day schedules
| Chain | Reported schedule for Dec. 25, 2025 |
|---|---|
| Whole Foods Market | Closed, according to its holiday-hours guidance; check the local store page for other holiday hours. |
| H-E-B | Stores, pharmacy, curbside and home delivery were listed as closed on Christmas Day on the H-E-B holiday schedule. |
| Kroger and family banners | ABC News/GMA reported stores closed on Christmas Day and reopening Dec. 26 with regular hours. Its listed family banners included Ralphs, Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Foods Co, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Jay C Food Store, King Soopers, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pay-Less Super Markets, Pick ’n Save, QFC, Ruler and Smith’s. Check the Kroger store locator for a local listing. |
| Publix | ABC News/GMA reported all stores closed on Christmas Day. Check the Publix locations page for branch information. |
| Costco | Closed, according to ABC News/GMA’s holiday store roundup. |
| Sam’s Club | Closed, according to ABC News/GMA’s holiday store roundup. |
| Trader Joe’s | Closed on Christmas Day; the roundup reported Christmas Eve hours until 5 p.m. |
| Albertsons and Safeway | Hours varied. Axios reported many Albertsons stores closed, while those open had adjusted hours; some Safeway locations were open with varying hours. See the dated holiday roundup and confirm with the branch. |
What grocery stores were open on New Year’s Day 2026?
More chains operated on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, than on Christmas Day, but openings and hours were not uniform. AP reported that ALDI, Costco and Trader Joe’s were closed. AP also corrected an earlier version of its roundup that had incorrectly listed ALDI as open; its updated report lists the closure.
Reported New Year’s Day schedules
| Chain | Reported schedule for Jan. 1, 2026 |
|---|---|
| H-E-B | The company’s holiday schedule listed stores open regular hours. Curbside and home delivery were listed as starting at 9 a.m., and pharmacy hours as 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; posted times can be location-specific, so verify the branch. |
| Kroger and family banners | Most stores were reported open on New Year’s Day, with local hours to confirm via the store locator. |
| Publix | Stores were reported open, with many locations closing at 7 p.m. Check the local store listing rather than assume that time applied everywhere. |
| Albertsons | AP listed the chain among those generally open, possibly with modified hours. Check the AP roundup and the local listing. |
| Costco | Closed, according to ABC News/GMA’s holiday store roundup. |
| Sam’s Club | Closed, according to ABC News/GMA’s holiday store roundup. |
| Trader Joe’s | Closed, according to ABC News/GMA’s holiday store roundup. |
| ALDI | Closed, according to AP’s updated New Year’s Day report. |
| Whole Foods Market | Many stores had modified hours on New Year’s Day; use the local store page linked from Whole Foods’ store listings. |
How to check whether a nearby store is open
For a query like “stores open near me,” the decisive information is the exact branch’s schedule for the exact date. Roundups summarize chain policies but may not reflect local exceptions, especially for regional stores, franchises and independents.

- Open the retailer’s official store locator or the branch’s own page.
- Select the specific location and look for date-specific holiday hours, not only its usual weekly schedule.
- If holiday hours are missing or unclear, call the store before leaving. Confirm the opening and closing time for the service you need.
Store, pharmacy, curbside and delivery hours can differ
A grocery store’s posted hours do not establish that its pharmacy counter, curbside pickup or delivery service follows the same schedule. H-E-B’s holiday schedule, for example, gave separate New Year’s Day times for stores, curbside, delivery and pharmacy. Whole Foods directs customers to local store pages for modified hours.
Walgreens is an essentials fallback, not a conventional grocery store. Its 2025 Holiday Hub listed stores open on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, while noting that pharmacy hours could vary. Use the Walgreens locator to check a branch; an open store does not mean its pharmacy is open.
