Greenhouse Emergency Supplies and Backup Equipment: A Practical Buying Guide

A practical greenhouse emergency plan starts with the systems your crop cannot lose: heat, ventilation, controls, or water. Learn how to prioritize backup power, alarms, frost protection, and storm repairs.

The right greenhouse emergency supplies depend on what could fail, what your crops need, and how long you may be without power or water. Start by listing the equipment that must run together—typically heat and controls in cold weather, or ventilation fans and water pumps in hot weather—then size backup power for motor startup as well as normal operation. Add temperature alerts, crop-appropriate frost protection, covering repair materials, and a tested plan for fuel, maintenance, and safe operation.

Start with the failures that put your greenhouse at risk

A greenhouse emergency plan is not a universal shopping list. In a cold-weather outage, loss of heat or controls may be the urgent problem; during warm weather, stopped fans can compromise ventilation, while pumps and water systems may also be essential. UF/IFAS Extension notes that most greenhouses require fans, water pumps, and heating equipment. The systems to protect depend on your structure, season, crop, and operating goals. UF/IFAS Extension: Auxiliary Power Units For Greenhouse Operations and Penn State Extension: Greenhouse Production.

Make an essential-load inventory

List the equipment you expect to operate during an outage, including heaters and their controls, fans, pumps, and alarm systems. Record each unit’s nameplate voltage, phase, running current, and motor horsepower. Mark which loads can be paused and which must operate at the same time. This inventory is the starting point for choosing a generator, not the generator’s advertised wattage alone. UF/IFAS Extension and UConn Extension: General Strategies for Producers.

Plan for the season and crop

Identify the failure that is most consequential in each season. A winter plan may prioritize heat and freeze-sensitive water lines; a summer plan may prioritize ventilation and irrigation. Temperature thresholds and acceptable response times vary by crop and operating objective, so do not assume one backup setup protects every greenhouse equally.

Choose backup power around the actual loads

A standby generator can support critical greenhouse equipment, but there is no generally suitable generator size for every structure. The combination of equipment, motor startup requirements, well pumps, and single- or three-phase service all affect the choice. For a home or hobby greenhouse, the essential load may be limited; a commercial greenhouse may need to keep several larger systems running at once.

Account for motor startup

UF/IFAS Extension says motor starting amperage may be two to seven times the running amount. That is a general sizing caution, not a substitute for the equipment and generator manufacturers’ specifications. Determine which loads will run simultaneously, account for startup demand, and have the proposed combination checked by a qualified electrician. UF/IFAS recommends starting the largest or most heavily loaded motor first when evaluating essential loads. UF/IFAS Extension: Auxiliary Power Units For Greenhouse Operations.

  • Portable Generator: Weight 56lbs, lightweight and easy to move
  • Note: All Oxseryn generators are functionally tested in the factory, so there may be a slight smell of gas when you receive it

Check connection, fuel, and installation

A standby arrangement includes a generator and transfer switch. Generator connections and transfer equipment must be installed in accordance with applicable electrical requirements; consult a qualified electrician and follow local code. Choose a fuel and replenishment plan that fits the likely outage duration and the people available to start, monitor, and maintain the equipment. Keep fuel available, check generator condition and battery, and include backup-system checks in seasonal preparation. UF/IFAS Extension and UF/IFAS Extension: Greenhouse Heating Checklist.

Do not treat a portable generator as a plug-in solution for fixed greenhouse wiring. Its suitability depends on the loads, connection method, installation, and manufacturer requirements. Exhaust and placement also require careful attention; combustion equipment must be operated with appropriate exhaust and safety controls.

Add a temperature alarm, but do not mistake it for backup heat

A battery-powered greenhouse temperature alarm can warn you about a heating failure, power loss, or temperature outside the range you set. UGA Cooperative Extension describes warning devices as useful insurance and notes battery-powered alarms as one option. An alarm does not produce heat or keep the greenhouse within a safe range; it gives you a chance to respond. UGA Cooperative Extension: Greenhouses: Heating, Cooling and Ventilation.

When comparing alarms, check whether the device is audible, sends remote alerts if needed, has battery backup, covers the required temperature range, and can be tested where you intend to use it. No particular alarm model or brand is established here.

Prepare for frost and frozen water systems

Keep crop-appropriate frost protection fabric or covers on hand if they suit your crop and greenhouse setup. A cover can add protection in an appropriate application, but it does not replace a tested heating contingency for crops that require heat. No specific cover material rating or performance figure is established by the cited guidance.

Before freezing weather, check backup greenhouse heat and fuel. Drain irrigation lines, hoses, pumps, and sprayers that could freeze; insulate exposed pipes if a water system must remain in service. UConn Extension: Preparing Farm Operations for Extreme Fall and Winter Weather.

Keep covering repair materials and storm preparations ready

Inspect greenhouse coverings and repair tears before a storm or cold spell. UF/IFAS’s heating checklist includes repairing plastic tears and keeping replacement polytube available. If buying greenhouse film repair tape or a patch kit, match it to the covering material and follow the manufacturer’s guidance. A patch is a repair consumable, not a way to make a greenhouse windproof or a substitute for structural repairs. UF/IFAS Extension: Greenhouse Heating Checklist.

For forecast severe weather, secure frames and coverings, clear drainage, protect crops, and have backup generation ready for ventilation, cooling, and irrigation as needed. UConn Extension: Prepare Your Greenhouses for Weather Events.

Decide whether redundant or emergency heat is part of the plan

Alberta’s greenhouse best-management-practices guide gives redundant installed heat, portable space heaters, and renting emergency heating equipment as examples of heating contingencies. These are planning options, not endorsements of a particular appliance or rental provider. Any portable heater must be appropriate for the greenhouse environment and installed and operated safely. UF/IFAS cautions that greenhouse heating systems must avoid harmful fumes; do not use combustion equipment without suitable exhaust and safety controls. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry: Best Management Practices for Energy, Water & Waste in Alberta Greenhouses: E – Back-up Systems and UGA Cooperative Extension.

Use a short buying and readiness checklist

  • System served: Identify whether the equipment supports heat, fans, controls, pumps, alarms, or several loads.
  • Electrical match: Compare equipment nameplates and generator specifications for running and startup demand, voltage, and phase; confirm the combination and installation with a qualified electrician.
  • Outage logistics: Decide how fuel will be stored and replenished, who will start and monitor equipment, and how backup systems will be maintained and checked.
  • Season and crop: Prioritize freeze protection, ventilation, or water according to the crop’s needs and the time of year.
  • Structure and materials: Match repair materials to the greenhouse covering; use structural repairs and storm preparation where needed rather than relying on tape.
  • Warning versus intervention: Treat an alarm as an alert, not a substitute for a generator, backup heat, or a response plan.

Write down the steps to take when power fails, keep the procedure accessible, and test the backup systems seasonally. UConn Extension recommends checking and maintaining backup systems and verifying their functionality. UConn Extension: General Strategies for Producers.
