Its plan was to make more valuable, higher-protein ingredients from corn while continuing to produce ethanol. Green Plains now describes a broader biorefining platform that includes low-carbon fuels, renewable feedstocks, protein ingredients, dextrose and carbon capture. Recent company-reported production shows Ultra-High Protein is part of its operations, but the available figures do not establish that every target announced in 2020 was achieved.
What was Green Plains’ transformation?
In a February 2020 article, Successful Farming described Green Plains’ plan to diversify beyond a business centered on ethanol. The company aimed to extract higher-protein ingredients from corn for animal and fish feed, pursuing products that could offer a different cash-flow profile amid ethanol-market volatility. CEO Todd Becker called it a “total transformation plan”; that was management’s description of its ambition, not a measured conclusion about results.
The underlying idea was to obtain more saleable products from corn, rather than stop making ethanol. The 2020 account described a process in which Fluid Quip Technology produced an intermediate ingredient with about 50% protein, followed by a Novozymes enzyme partnership intended to raise the protein content further. Aquaculture, pet food and novel ingredients were among the intended markets. The story also described investment at Shenandoah, Iowa, and engineering for additional facilities. Those were historical plans and project details; they should not be read as confirmation of current capacity, output or completed sites.
How is an ethanol company making high-protein feed?
Green Plains’ model is to separate and process components of corn at biorefineries. Ethanol remains one output, while other products can include feed ingredients and renewable corn oil. In its current description, the company says its platform also encompasses dextrose and renewable feedstocks for advanced biofuels. The strategy is therefore a shift in the range and value of products made from renewable crops, not a simple switch from ethanol to feed.

What does Green Plains make besides ethanol today?
Green Plains’ current company overview describes a biorefining platform producing low-carbon biofuels, renewable feedstocks for advanced biofuels, high-protein ingredients for animal and aquaculture diets, and dextrose. The company also says it is working to reduce the carbon footprint of its ingredients and that multiple locations have been committed to a carbon capture and sequestration project. This is the company’s stated strategic scope; it does not by itself quantify how much revenue or production comes from each product.
There is also recent operating evidence for one part of the strategy. Green Plains’ Q2 2026 results report 49 thousand tons of Ultra-High Protein production for that quarter. The report lists Ultra-High Protein alongside ethanol, distillers grains, renewable corn oil and carbon capture and storage operations at three Nebraska plants within the ethanol production segment. The company reported eight operating ethanol plants in the same quarter. These figures demonstrate ongoing ethanol operations and reported protein output, but a single quarter is not a full-year production measure or proof that all earlier targets were met.

How has the company’s footprint changed?
In September 2025, Green Plains announced the completed sale of its Rives, Tennessee ethanol plant to POET Biorefining – Obion, LLC. The announced cash price was $190 million, including estimated working capital of $20 million to be finalized after closing. Green Plains said the sale would strengthen its balance sheet, eliminate junior mezzanine debt, enhance liquidity and fit its portfolio-optimization and carbon-reduction priorities. The transaction is evidence of a portfolio change, not evidence that the high-protein initiative caused the sale.

The record supports a measured conclusion: Green Plains continues to operate ethanol plants while reporting Ultra-High Protein production and describing a wider platform of biorefinery products and carbon-management efforts. It does not support a precise before-and-after diversification percentage, a claim that ethanol has been displaced, or confirmation that every 2020 facility plan or capacity estimate became operational.

For personal-finance readers, this is an example of a company changing its product mix and asset portfolio, not a consumer product or a direct household-money opportunity. The company’s Q2 2026 release also reported $67.1 million in net income attributable to Green Plains and $93.3 million in adjusted EBITDA, but it attributed a substantial part of adjusted EBITDA to 45Z production tax-credit value and also cited higher margins. Those results should not be credited solely to higher-protein products or treated as a standalone measure of the transformation’s success.
