Because the auction has closed, its page is useful as a past result rather than a way to bid on this watch. Any buyer evaluating a different example should distinguish its hammer price from fees and compare it with the full details of the sale.
What was included in lot 4558?
Loupe This catalogued the watch as a circa-1972 Grand Seiko VFA reference 6186-8000-G, with a silver sunburst dial and a 37 mm stainless-steel case. The automatic caliber 6186B was listed at 36,000 beats per hour. The watch was offered on a leather strap with inner and outer boxes. The listing does not state the lug width, so measurements from another example should not be assumed to apply.
#1 Best Overall
- See-through case back
- Date display
- Screw-down crown
- 40mm Diameter
- Weight 178.0 g
The seller’s scorecard assigned grade V 9 and characterized the vintage watch as near mint overall, noting light scratches and small nicks on the case edges. The dial and hands were described as near mint. Loupe This also says the watch had previously sold at Phillips Geneva Watch Auction XIII for CHF 44,100. These are catalogue descriptions and sale history for this particular lot, not an independent condition assessment or guarantee.
The listing included a timing-machine reading but explicitly described it as a courtesy reading only. It should not be treated as a service warranty or assurance of how the watch will keep time on a wearer’s wrist.
What does VFA mean for this watch?
Phillips dates the 6186-8000’s debut to 1972 and says the model remained offered through 1975. Its 2023 catalogue essay reports research indicating production took place in five individual calendar months. Phillips describes the original VFA standard as a mean daily rate of ±2 seconds and an original guarantee of ±1 minute per month for two years.

- Calendar-linked time difference adjustment function
- Movement Caliber 9S86,
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
Those figures describe historical regulation standards and the original guarantee, not the current accuracy of a decades-old watch. The VFA designation alone cannot establish the present condition, service history, or timekeeping performance of an individual example. Phillips’ 6186-8000 reference history and related lot.
How does the result compare with other auction sales?
Past auction results show that examples have sold at different prices, but they are not interchangeable valuations. Phillips records a 1973 6186-8000-G, case number 320’323, with caliber 6186, a 37 mm case, leather strap, and original fitted box, selling for CHF 27,940. A separate circa-1974 Phillips example with caliber 6186B and a 37 mm case sold for HK$228,600. Another 1973 6186 VFA lot sold for $30,240.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess another 6186-8000-G sale
- Confirm the exact watch: Check the reference, case number, dial, and movement rather than relying on a broad VFA description.
- Read condition details closely: Look for specific notes on the case, dial, hands, originality, and any known service history.
- Check what comes with it: Boxes, papers, and straps vary by lot and can affect comparability.
- Separate price from fees: Identify whether the published result is a hammer price or includes the buyer’s premium and other charges.
- Keep currency and sale context attached: Compare the venue and date as well as the currency; a historical result is not a current appraisal.
Why the VFA name is not a current performance promise
Phillips owner Mark Cho described the VFA as “a pinnacle in Grand Seiko’s history in terms of timekeeping accuracy” and as part of a bold era of case design. That historical significance helps explain the model’s appeal, but it does not replace an inspection or prove how a particular vintage watch performs today. For lot 4558, even the auction’s timing-machine figure was explicitly limited to a courtesy reading.
