People living near the Wolf Hollow Bitcoin mine in Granbury, Texas, have reported tinnitus, vertigo, migraines, nausea, sleep disruption and cardiovascular complaints that they believe are connected to the facility’s persistent noise. Those accounts deserve attention, but they do not establish that the mine caused any individual’s symptoms: reporting has found no major medical studies of health effects from living near a Bitcoin mine.
What residents near the Granbury mine say they are experiencing
The Wolf Hollow facility began Bitcoin mining operations in summer 2022. Residents later described a persistent hum or roar from the site’s cooling fans. TIME reported in its July 2024 investigation, updated in January 2026, that it spoke with more than 40 people in the Granbury area who said they had a medical ailment they believed was connected to the mine. That is an interview count of people reporting a suspected connection, not a medically verified count of cases caused by the facility. TIME’s investigation
Reported complaints included ringing in the ears, dizziness, migraines, nausea, disrupted sleep and cardiovascular concerns. Granbury resident Sarah Rosenkranz told TIME, “We’re living in a nightmare.” Her words convey the effect residents say the noise has had on their lives; they are not a clinical finding.
What the sound readings do—and do not—show
TIME reported that a constable’s sound recorder reached 91 decibels near the facility and that he recorded readings above 85 decibels from the plant more than 35 times during 2024. Residents also reported a 72-decibel reading in a bedroom at night. These are readings at particular locations and times, not a controlled assessment of each resident’s exposure or a continuous average. The reports do not establish how long an individual experienced a given level, what other sound sources were present, or whether that exposure caused a particular illness.

Noise can be a health concern in general, but evidence about noise exposure should not be mistaken for evidence about this site or these residents. TIME noted broader research connecting prolonged noise exposure with cardiovascular effects; it also said there had been no major medical studies on the health impacts of living near a Bitcoin mine. German cardiologist Thomas Münzel told TIME, “The most spectacular cardiovascular diseases will develop.” That is his warning about noise-related cardiovascular risk, not proof that the Granbury mine caused residents’ reported symptoms. CDC/NIOSH noise and hearing-loss information provides general context, not findings about the Wolf Hollow facility.
How to understand claims that mine noise causes symptoms
The most accurate distinction is between experience, general evidence and demonstrated causation:

- General evidence: Research on noise exposure can inform questions about hearing, sleep and cardiovascular health, but does not determine what caused a particular person’s symptoms.
- Site-specific proof: The reporting cited here does not provide a major medical study testing whether living near Wolf Hollow caused the reported conditions.
Symptoms such as migraines, vertigo, nausea or tinnitus can have different causes. If you are experiencing them, consult a qualified health professional rather than using a sound reading to diagnose a condition or establish its cause. A sound meter can help someone keep a personal log of observations, but a consumer device is not a medical diagnostic tool and does not by itself prove causation or guarantee legally useful evidence.
What changed at the facility, and why residents still disagree
In October 2025, KERA reported MARA’s statement that it had transitioned most of the site to immersion cooling and completed a sound wall. Those are company-reported equipment and mitigation changes. KERA and The Texas Tribune also reported that residents continued to raise noise concerns; the Tribune described residents’ view that the wall had done little to reduce the sound. The accounts are not equivalent to an independently verified before-and-after test. The reviewed reporting does not supply a comparable, independent series of sound measurements after the changes. Where the residents’ legal and local efforts stood in 2025
Earthjustice, which represents residents, said on September 3, 2025, that a Texas state court had denied MARA’s motion to dismiss earlier that summer. Residents had filed a motion seeking operational, equipment, mitigation and noise records. The denial was a procedural development, not a decision that MARA was liable or that the mine caused the residents’ health complaints. Earthjustice attorney Rodrigo Cantú said, “MARA must be compelled to release critical information about its operations, which have already caused serious harm to its neighbors.” That statement represents the residents’ position in the litigation. KERA also reported in October 2025 that Mitchell Bend residents were pursuing incorporation to gain municipal regulatory authority and that MARA had filed a federal lawsuit challenging the effort. KERA reported MARA’s position that the incorporation effort unfairly targeted businesses. The Texas Tribune reported residents’ view that Texas counties lack authority to set noise limits while cities may have that authority, and described both support and opposition within the community. These are dated accounts, not a statement of current court, election or statutory status.

How to document noise concerns without overstating what they prove
If you want to keep track of noise where you live, a sound level meter or decibel-meter app can be used to record personal observations. TIME described a resident using a sound-meter app, and reported a constable’s readings; neither makes a personal reading a medical assessment. For a useful log, record the date and time, where you were, how the sound seemed, the device used and any relevant conditions. Keep symptom notes separate from sound readings, and do not treat a correlation in your notes as proof of cause. Any medical concerns should be discussed with a clinician.
