Grammarly’s September 2025 beta added writing assistance in Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, and Italian. The launch included grammar and spelling corrections plus paragraph-level rewrites in those five languages. Grammarly also offered inline translation across 19 languages, but translation coverage was broader than the launch’s correction and rewriting coverage.
For users, this was primarily a multilingual proofreading and rewriting expansion—not a claim that Grammarly had created five fully equivalent versions of its English product overnight. The feature was available across Free, Pro, Enterprise, and Education plans, subject to plan limitations and changes in current product terms.

Which five languages did Grammarly add?
- Spanish
- French
- Portuguese
- German
- Italian
The five-language expansion was announced as a beta in September 2025. Grammarly described it as a way to bring more of its writing-assistance experience to multilingual users, including students, international teams, customer-support staff, marketers, and professionals writing to audiences in different countries. Grammarly’s launch announcement provides the original feature and availability details.
What could Grammarly do in those languages?
Grammar and spelling corrections
The initial release provided real-time grammar and spelling suggestions in all five launch languages. These suggestions were designed to identify correctness issues while users wrote, rather than requiring them to copy text into a separate translation or proofreading website.
#1 Best Overall
Paragraph-level rewrites
Users could select text and request paragraph-level rewrites in Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, and Italian. Rewriting is different from correcting an error: it can change clarity, flow, style, or tone, and therefore requires more judgment than a simple spelling correction.
Inline translation
Grammarly’s launch post separately described inline translation across 19 languages. That does not mean grammar correction, rewriting, clarity suggestions, and tone controls were available in all 19 languages. The five-language list applied to the new writing-support capabilities; translation had its own broader coverage.
How AI enabled the expansion
Grammarly said advances in large language models made it possible to extend its writing-assistance systems beyond English. Multilingual models can provide a common foundation across languages, potentially reducing the need to build every capability independently from scratch.
Recommended Free Tools
That does not make multilingual editing automatic or equally reliable in every language. A production writing assistant still needs language-specific training data, evaluation, product integration, and quality controls. Grammarly’s engineering discussion describes work involving multilingual foundation models, instruction tuning, language-editing data, and review by native speakers who checked and corrected automatically translated instructions. Grammarly’s engineering account explains this research context.
Grammarly also discussed mEdIT, a multilingual editing research project covering Arabic, Chinese, English, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. The company’s research page does not establish that mEdIT itself powered the five-language product, and it stated that the research was not necessarily incorporated directly into the product at the time. It is therefore more accurate to describe mEdIT as relevant research context—not as the confirmed engine behind the launch.
Is Grammarly’s multilingual support free?
Grammarly announced the multilingual features for Free, Pro, Enterprise, and Education users, with limitations on the Free plan. Grammarly’s support documentation likewise says multilingual suggestions are included across plans. However, “available on all plans” does not mean every feature is unlimited or identical across accounts.
Plan features, usage limits, platform coverage, and regional availability can change. Check the current Grammarly plans page before subscribing or budgeting for the service. The available evidence does not establish a reliable current dollar price, so a numeric price should not be assumed from the 2025 announcement.

Rank #3
For current multilingual suggestions, Grammarly says supported languages can be detected automatically. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar feedback may appear as real-time suggestions, while blue underlines can identify clarity, fluency, or conciseness improvements where those capabilities are supported. See the current multilingual-suggestions support page for language- and feature-specific details.
What are the limitations?
It launched as a beta
Beta status matters. Users could encounter missed errors, false positives, unnatural rewrites, or inconsistent behavior between platforms. Grammarly said additional capabilities would follow, including more advanced clarity suggestions in Spanish and support for additional languages.
Language support is feature-specific
A language can support basic spelling and grammar corrections without supporting every generative feature. In practical terms, “supported” may refer to one or more of the following:
- Spelling and punctuation
- Grammar and correctness
- Clarity and fluency
- Tone adjustments
- Paragraph rewriting
- Generative drafting
- Translation
Readers should check the exact feature list for their language rather than treating a language-support page as proof of full feature parity with English.
AI suggestions still require review
Grammar can often be checked against rules and examples, but tone, politeness, idioms, regional usage, and cultural meaning are more context-dependent. A rewrite that is grammatically correct may still sound unnatural or change the writer’s intent.
Verify names, numbers, legal wording, technical terminology, product names, URLs, and regional expressions. Grammarly is a writing assistant, not an independent authority on high-stakes language.
Common edge cases
- Mixed-language text: Automatic detection may be less dependable when sentences switch languages or contain quotations.
- Regional variants: Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German differ across countries and regions. The supplied product information does not confirm detailed regional controls.
- Proper nouns and code: Names, abbreviations, URLs, and code can be incorrectly flagged.
- Idioms: A literal or polished rewrite can alter meaning.
- Short fragments: Very short text may not provide enough context for useful tone or clarity advice.
- Privacy and connectivity: Users who need offline editing or strict control over remote text processing should review Grammarly’s current privacy and product documentation before using it.
What changed after the original five-language launch?
The September 2025 launch should not be confused with Grammarly’s later expansion. In March 2026, Grammarly announced writing support in 17 additional languages:

Grammarly said those additions initially focused on grammar and error correction, with fluency, clarity, and tone suggestions to follow. Its current support documentation also lists Japanese and Chinese and provides a broader, feature-specific list of multilingual suggestions. Because Grammarly’s announcement and support page describe the rollout and counts differently, the safest approach is to rely on the exact language and capability list rather than one headline number. The later announcement is available at Grammarly’s multilingual expansion update.
Grammarly versus translation and language-editing tools
There is no universal winner; the right tool depends on the task.
| Tool | Best fit | What makes it different |
|---|---|---|
| Grammarly | Integrated writing assistance | Useful for corrections and rewrites inside browser and desktop workflows. |
| LanguageTool | Multilingual proofreading | An alternative grammar and style-checking engine; verify current language and plan coverage. |
| DeepL | Translation-focused work | Better suited when converting text between languages is the primary task. |
| Microsoft Editor | Microsoft 365 users | Convenient for people working mainly in Word and Outlook. |
| Google Translate | Quick general translation | A translation-first utility, not a direct replacement for grammar feedback and paragraph rewriting. |
Grammarly is a strong fit if you already use it and want multilingual corrections without changing your everyday writing workflow. A dedicated translation or localization platform is more appropriate when you need terminology management, translation memories, glossary enforcement, or professional review.
What the launch means for users
Grammarly’s five-language expansion made multilingual writing assistance more convenient, especially for everyday emails, documents, chats, and posts. The important distinction is that AI expanded the reach of an editing workflow; it did not eliminate the need for language expertise.
Use Grammarly to catch likely errors and improve readability, then review the result yourself—or have a qualified native speaker review it—when the audience, stakes, or cultural context matter. For legal, medical, financial, contractual, or customer-facing localization, treat an AI suggestion as a draft rather than a final authority.
